      If you learn to have them around your house, you actually can have them keep a lot of other bugs away from the area, except Dragonflies who hunt the Wasp as food.
      If you don't want the Wasp nest close to where you stay you can always put some Cloves (the aromatic flower buds) in a piece of Gauze and put it under the opening of the Wasp Nest, they dislike that and move mostly a short distance first but if you do the same when they start to build again they move further, but it's best you do it when they are away from it or at nighttime.
      The only time when you should be careful with Wasps is in autumn when it starts to be cold because then some of them seek warm places to keep alive a little longer and others for going into Winter dormancy, at that time they sometimes try to get into your clothes to keep warm.
      I actually see benefits in having them around, but never ever act aggressive or do panic stuff when they are around because they also get scared then.

    At 0:50 there is also a paper wasp (Polistes sp. - long yellow legs, orange antennae, coming in from the right); it seems to be very aggressive to the yellowjackets despite being only slightly larger than them. I had never seen the two species interact, and I'm pleased to see that a single paper wasp can hold its ground against a bunch of those nasty yellowjackets. I have let the former build their nests in my tool shed in the hope of repelling the latter, and this video suggests it might work. Thank you very much / vielen Dank !

      It's not bravery; it's knowledge. If you understand how wasps work, you can usually be near them without trouble. Just be calm and still and they won't see you as a threat. (Of course, it's hard for some people to be calm, but obviously this photographer understands!)

      +J Page NICE! someone who understands :]
      it's true though if Wasps sting without reason... how comes that guy hasnt got stung yet? he would probably have moved away if he got stung! believe it or not but Wasps are more afraid of us than we are of them, they'll only sting if you disrupt them by screaming(would you want someone screaming down your ear? of course that'll scare the shit out of you!), waving your arms around(because they see that as a threat, you'd panic if someone suddenly waves their arms in front of your face, would you?) or hurting them
      for a whole summer I've been dealing with Yellow Jacket Wasps that end up in my house by getting them back outside passively... and if they wanted to be total assholes and sting me, they would have done so! even this year I've woke up to a Yellow Jacket Wasp hanging by my window that's right next to my freaking bed, if it wanted to be a total asshole most of you claim them to be, it would have stung me whilst I was asleep! but it had no interest in me it wanted to be outside, so I helped it by opening the window and letting it out, I was fairly close to the wasp but because I was so calm around it (not screaming or waving my arms around it) it didn't seem to give a shit about me being there!

    • @Atriiid
      @Atriiid 5 років тому +15

      Wasps will not cause any trouble if you do nothing ; they have no reason to sting you without reason...

      Katherine Smith A yellow jacket is a wasp. A Hornet is also a wasp. They all fall under the generalized classification of wasps.
      Hornet is a term used to describe a wasp larger than a certain size, and with certain characteristics. A yellow jacket is another term used to describe the type of wasp seen here in the video, because they are so common, people felt like they should kind of have their own name.
      All Yellow jackets are wasps, but not all wasps are yellow jackets.

      The Japanese giant hornet is the worst of all. They're about as long as the human thumb from tip to wrist and have a 6.25mm-long stinger. If one sees prey it will emit a kind of pheromone that attracts others like them tand their sting is the most potent of all the wasps and hornet stings because of the sheer volume of toxin they can inject. These guys will rip their insect prey apart and take the pieces.

      I believe most wasp species emit the "attack/defend" pheromone. I enraged a yellowjacket ground nest mowing my lawn. As I fled across the yard towards my house I noticed a larger swarm emerging from another nest 20 feet from the first... then as I ran around the back of my house, a third swarm erupted from a rotten tree stump. Most of them followed me in my home, much to my room mate's terror. That was a day of infamy.

    HI again Lothar! This is another great video with excellent close-ups. I really enjoyed it and in particular, you captured the European Hornet taking off with a yellow jacket. It's a very common event here where I live in the Northern United States, but I've failed to capture it again and again. Just as you've shown so well, the hornet lands and grabs a wasp or honeybee, pulls off the head, flies to a nearby tree and finished dispatching it until just the thorax is left. That's the protein pellet it takes back to feed the brood. I'm much more content watching it take wasps over my honeybees :) VERY well done and thanks for sharing your observations. Thumbs UP!
