Some of these reactors are delusional. No one knows exactly what they might do until their actually put in that situation. The first instinct & feeling is rage & revenge. Even before heartbreak, guilt, regret, sorrow, & shame. Thinking pragmatically or being a realist is the last thing on someone's mind. Of course you know that's what John wants. An to kill him is letting him win. David knew too, but with immense emotions surging through. It's easier said than done to contain them at that moment. Especially when now David had the power of life & death over someone he extremely hates.
