  • In this video we look at what the current draw is on the battery when you unlock and open the door on the Land Rover Defender L663. We look at which circuits are consuming the power and how much. Maybe Land Rover could devise a "camping mode" to stop some of these circuits powering up when you are camping.

This is what I like about this channel. Acknowledge the problem. Identify the cause. Propose a solution. Three simple steps and if anyone dares to make silly accusations of you bad-mouthing Land Rover, I will personally be very annoyed. If anything, I think Land Rover will welcome this kind of feedback. Excellent video and your proposed solution is brilliant.

Hi - I too hope this get some attention. I love my Defender and I love camping with it - Land Rover even sell roof tents for the Defender so its important that the car can deliver on the lifestyle offered. I may investigate further as it seems there is a signal that comes from the BCM to wake up the infotainment relay on the rear circuit board.. I will data log this and see how it behaves.

As an overlander, that is an excellent video. When you have a second battery system with a fridge and a couple of other items drawing power, you really do want to conserve as much energy as possible. I think LR would destroy the market if they included a camping option under the off-road options. Select it when you park and it stays on until you select any other drive mode.

@@L663 I think they could add it as a menu option in Pivi, and also allow you to configure which lights come on, or default them to manual for example. Where I think they'll struggle is adding it to the Remote app as that would require a 4G signal to work. If you tried to use 'local' bluetooth you'd need Pivi to be running again. I wonder how much the built in modem and associated electronics for that use? Or whether they only function if Pivi is on, likewise SOTA.
I also thought one of the features of Pivi was it's own battery to help with keeping it alive. The media press release is not too specific. I wonder where that is?

Nice to see this come up after our brief chat online the other day.
I’ve just been camping in the Zambezi valley for a week (video coming up soon) and I have now worked out that if you open the rear door the infotainment doesn’t start up. Any of the four driver or passenger doors starts it up, so leave the doors open and if raining or there are bugs flying around you can close the doors without letting them latch/close completely and eventually everything shuts down and stays off.
Not a perfect solution but works.
At the very least I hope Landrover turn off the startup of everything on the passenger doors and leave it on the drivers door. Makes more sense for us who use our vehicles in remote areas.
I also have a dual battery system but this is stand alone with solar power so running the fridge and exterior lighting does not affect the vehicles battery

Great idea enabling a camping mode from the app. My L663 constantly displays low battery - I wondered whether it was because the car is approaching two years old but a car security specialist said that even on a long run the battery does not fully recharge - Not sure if that is true. I might mention to the JLR service team when it goes in for its first service but suspect they will blame the dash cams I had installed, however, I know they switch off when the battery goes below a certain voltage.

Hi Simon, great video and I experienced the same issue the first time I took the car out for camping last year. I have a Defender MY2022 for our first overlanding trip last year we went through Southern Oregon and Northern Nevada; the morning right after the first night out camping I got the "low battery warning" message. During the whole trip I kept the interior lights off (when it's dark we use headlamps anyway to move around the camp) but also I kept 1 door slightly open all the time until we were done and ready to go to bed, as just one door slightly open disables the screen and the PIVI system, they don't to wake up any time you open the other doors to access your stuff in the car. That was my workaround for the trip and since it worked I keep doing it anytime I go camping. It’s far from ideal so I 100% agree an additional driving mode would be great!

  • @newdefendermods

Agreed there is a post on this in our facebook group around a year ago where we also suggest a camping mode, its terrible as is when you're camping usually your car is your base and your in and out of it constantly sometimes for a week or more, battery conservation dual batteries or not is crutial even if you have solar. The mode will also be super helpful when you are working on your car a whole day or over multiple days when you are opening closing the doors constantly and get the dreaded low bat warning. Looking forward to what you and Landrover come up with Simon, great Vid and welcome to your new Cheif Filming Officer too 😉👍🏽

That is an interesting discover Simon. I notice that the speed in which the systems shut down (the radio for example) increases as the battery ages so must monitor the voltage very closely. I wish I could listen to a 30 minute radio programme whilst sitting in the car but about 10 minutes is the best I can ever get and that drops rapidly as the battery ages. Years ago I could sit in my Cortina Ghia with my Mum and Dad and listen to a whole afternoon of Sunday music without any battery problems. It must be progress!😳😳😀😀😀Richard

Thank you for confirming what I suspected after my first big camp with the 110 and low battery warnings. I have been hoping Land Rover would engage a “camping mode” - other cars have it, and I think it could be a software fix. Beyond all that, the best solution I have found for camping is: key in a faraday box. Holding and getting a flashing light on the overhead lights, so they don’t turn on when you open the door (its in the iGuide). And now possibly pulling the pivi pro fuse (thank you!) The other wise/practical solution is to have a portable battery jumper (mine is a noco and its brilliant if you truly find yourself with a dead battery in the middle of nowhere). Thanks as always for such a good post! (And I’d buy a remote fuse disabler in a second if such a thing existed for the 110)

    • @L663
      @L663  2 роки тому

Hi Steven - my key is not keyless entry so the faraday cage thing is not a factor for me - but i can see this would be a problem for you as your key would be in close proximity of the car - so "camping mode" would need to disable keyless entry ! I am not sure if a fuse disabler is available or if we will need to design this into a loom onto the pivi pro unit ( under the passenger seat )

    • @stevenburnsvideo
      @stevenburnsvideo 2 роки тому

@@L663 I actually am not convinced 'camping mode' would need to disable the keyless entry. I think even with pivipro simply disengaged it would be a significant help with battery drain. As for the key, a faraday box/bag is an easy work around too (and smart just to have with sneaky car thieves)! My biggest issue while camping in the back, was trying to be sly and not disrupt folks... and if I crawled out the back by opening a door, the pivipro screen would light up for 10 minutes... basically alerting everyone in neighboring camps that yes, I had too many pints and had to use the loo. Not cool. :-)

Purely by experimental method, I found out that if one of the four doors (not the trunk) remains ajar, and the Defender falls asleep with this door ajar, then in the future the opening and closing of other doors will not wake up the car!
This will already save us a lot of energy, however, the car’s reaction to the key still remains. According to the dealer, every time the Defender detects a key near the vehicle, it initializes the basic systems to then speed up starting, and also turns on the fuel pump. If the car is not started, the systems turn off, but every time the car detects the key, it starts the systems again - and all this wastes battery power.

Hi Simon, when I go camping with my 110, I now place a small carabiner in the rear barn door locking mechanism and double lock the vehicle. The car powers down and this way I can keep the barn door open and avoid packing away cooking/wash up paraphernalia that hangs off my fold down table. If you leave the passenger door ajar or the vehicle unlocked, the key proximity sensors keep communicating with the key (or activity watch) and occasionally the recirculation fan and/or the pivi pro will fire up, I have no idea why but have experienced this many times now. Before the carabiner trick, my headlights also used to turn on when someone opened a door, at least until I switched this off in the settings. I installed a 100Ah aux lithium battery through a dc/dc charger for the fridge and accessories and wired 3D Tim's overhead loadspace light through a three position switch so that it can run either off the aux, off the ignition or be powered off altogether. One thing to note, if you keep ignoring the low battery warning on the dash, you will eventually need a jump start and this will require a device that can provide >650 CCA (most lithium jump starters are 400 or less) or you'll need to recharge the main AGM from a running donor vehicle for a long time before it will crank over. I learnt this the hard way.

The catch to this is that if you don't open a passenger door and then double lock the vehicle, the barn door won't be re-alarmed and can be opened without a key in your pocket. As they’ve got newer so the battery lasts less and less. Big difference - early cars - no stop start. My wife’s 5 year old Evoque is now on its 3rd Battery. To be fair she doesn’t do too many long runs and a lot of stop start but after about 18 months the low battery warning is on. Appreciate they have bigger batteries now in theory to compensate but to my mind it makes a mockery of being green with ATP start but having to replace batteries at regular spaces.

Cars with no stop start, use the older style, lead acid battery.
Years ago, your battery would generally last 5 years, or more
( many factors do affect the lifespan of a battery )
Cars have so much more electrical stuff etc nowadays, but, battery size has not increased.
Everything focussed on saving space and weight.
A lead acid battery in a new modern car, generally now won’t last as long as it used to, as modern cars have so much more gadgets in them nowadays.
No stop start means that an average lead acid battery will start the car approx 750 times per year.
( depends how often u drive your car, and how many times u start it up every day )
A car with stop start uses a different type of battery
      AGM battery
On a normal drive, the AGM battery will restart the car many times..
Over 17,000 restarts over an average year !!
Stop start battery works very hard, and thus they generally are unlikely to last beyond 3 years.
AGM battery needing replacement after 2 years is not uncommon.
AGM battery very expensive compared to a lead acid battery
      But
Manufacturers chasing lower fuel economy and emissions.
      Environmental benefits
      But
More expensive for the consumer who is replacing the (expensive) AGM battery every 2 to 3 years !!
In my 2017 Disco Sport, I always turn off stop start.
Still on the original AGM battery after 5 years and
      90,000 kms
AGM battery is very strong, and will last a long time, IF it’s only being required to start the car 750 times per year, instead of 17,000 times.
      Cheers. 👍

Dash Cam? We had an EGR Valve issue in France some years ago in our FL2. It went in an excellent garage (Maurienne Auto Diffusion!). They did, however, leave the dash-cam running the entire time they were working on the car. We got the car back to our camp site, ready to go home the following morning and woke up to a dead battery. Nice people on site helped jump start the car. I've kept a Lithium jump starter in our cars ever since. And a charger in the caravan!)

Think of installing a switch to force all the Defender's power on and off, just like you did with a trunk interior open switch. Korean custom companies develop this and install a slim mode switch on the Defender to customers. Whenever the door and trunk are opened, the interior light and audio light system are turned on and activated, consuming electricity and displaying a low voltage warning light. The sleep mode module is a device that prevents the vehicle from recognizing even if a door or trunk is opened.

Hi Simon, Thanks for your great videos and products. ( I have purchased your front grill improvement and it looks great!) I have a 2013 Freelander2, SD4 HSE. Is there any chance you could produce a similar schematic chart of what each fuse does for the Freelander. I appreciate it would take up your time but would prove extremely helpful to "Luddites" like me who have great difficulties with the mysteries of "electrics".

In a similar vein - I now carry a portable radio in the car so that I can listen for more than 10 minutes before shutdown.........which is a bit of a basic remedy for something so fundamental to the use of a car. Perhaps Simon could have a quiet word in someone's ear about a fix for this too? Running the engine just to listen to the news is a bit extravagant in every way methinks.

I had the low battery issue after about a year I had my Defender P400, needed to call Land Rover Roadside Assistance three times to get a boost. Had the battery swapped out and still had some parasitic draw on the battery. The dealer took the car for over a week updated all the software in the entire vehicle and fortunately had some early software updates like wireless CarPlay, ever since then never had the issue with the battery. I purchased a Noco battery booster and fortunately never had to use it yet. I think with the bigger batteries in the Defender the alternator may be too small because larger AGM batteries take longer to charge and require more amps. I always suspected it was the infotainment system that was drawing the power because right before the battery issues started there were some new music apps that were added Spotify, TuneIn etc to Pivipro and there could of been a bug in the Spotify app that was still playing and connected to the internet and drawing power after you shutdown the car and locked it. I don’t think the dealer or Land Rover ever found the actual problem and just updated all the software and firmware to be safe.

I was once told that a D4 draws power for nearly 45mins after turning off, while it shuts various systems down. I learnt from one of your videos, that holding the button for a few seconds turns the interior lights off, now I leave them off permanently.

Really interesting and thank you for publishing this. I have to say I’ve been extremely happy so far with my D250 and compared to my previous XC90 D5 my defender is a dream. I had so many problems with my XC90 which was forever giving me low battery warnings and was replaced once by Volvo. The stop start rarely worked because the battery was never charged enough 🤯 In comparison my D250 has not once, in 10 months, shown a low battery and the stop start always works. I’ve taken note not to leave doors open! Thank you 🙏

Interesting findings, I literally use mine as a van, I reckon some days I open and closes the back door 20 plus times (and I have the L.E.D light strip from yourselves) sometime the back door is left open for some time whilst unloading, not once have I had a low battery warning in over a year. The Radio shutting off after 10mins of sitting in car is annoying tho.

In addition to my L663 D240 First Edition I also own a 2022 Mini Cooper S E (the all electric one). The Mini’s BMS monitors both the movie I’ve HV battery and the 12v “services” battery and will not allow the 12v battery to drop too low, it will allow some charge from the HV battery to be sent to the 12v battery. I know that there have been a lot of issues with Ioniq5’s discharging their 12v batteries to the stage when the central locking cannot operate so they don’t have a smart BMS. Also if you look through the menus in your Tesla’s big screen I think you will find that it has a camping mode that allows the heating to cycle at night in cold weather - it might do other power saving thins to to reduce the load on the 12v battery with the car not being allowed to go fully into sleep mode like switching off the surround security cameras and other unnecessary things. I used to have issues with the battery in an L320 RRS TDv8 that would flatten its battery quickly if you left the tailgate open - that was fixed with a software upgrade. Could the answer to camping in the L663 be to stick masking tape over the courtesy light switches on the doors and tailgate to trick them into thinking that the open doors are closed ………

    • @L663
      @L663  2 роки тому

Hi Tim - some interesting points. The Tesla does release power from the HV battery to top up the 12v battery much like your Mini. There are work arounds we could do on the Defender like disconnect the fuses / unplug the infotainment system but 120W of power consumption is a lot ! Also i need to be able to lock the car as I normally have the drone and other equipment with me that i need to lock in the car.

I took it to Renault and they also found an electronic handbrake module problem. They replaced the battery and all is good. As you can tell I think there is some real room to improve power consumption here - with modern electronics 120W is wild. I have my theories on this ... Apple devices are the shining example of how to achieve fast response and low power consumption....but this requires a lot of integration of all the modules into one silicone IC !
