Oliveira is a very common Brazilian surname and he also speaks portuguese, so i think the answer about his origin is an easy one. (Brazil official language is Portuguese PT-BR)
The spanish quotes can be explained by the fact he was a soldier child, probably because he lived/fought in bolivia, venezuela ,cuba or another country in latin america. (so, being born in Portugal doesn't make sense, since this country is in another continent)

While I didn’t care much for Carlos in the original Resident Evil game or the other versions of him, I really did like him in the Remake. He was a total chad and had one of the coolest remake designs I’ve seen for a character. I wish we got more of that Carlos honestly.

I choose his original design most of the time while playing the remake mostly cause of that hair
here in Brasil, I remember all the magazines at the time stating that he was brazilian, I guess they just assume it because of the name lol.
I am more inclined to believe that he is brazilian or portuguese because oliveira with the "i" is a real common surname here, olivera (without the i) is accually more common in hispanic countries.
So remake asked a model from Brazil for Carlos's face model.
i thought he was Brazilian with Indigenous American ancestry but these things change every time a new dev team takes over

Original Carlos is still one of my favorite characters in RE, his personality fits right in with that whole RE cheese I love so much about the series. I might be one of the few as well but I'm kinda happy he hasn't returned as it's sometimes nice to see some characters can leave the Biohazard lifestyle... unlike Chris who will be with us until the death of the series lol.
Carlos is one of the few NPCs that make an actual difference and also has more potential than he's given credit for. Technically he has save Jill, which means he is on or above her skill level. That's crazy
I think Carlos is just Brazilian (a former Portuguese colony in South America), but because he became a child soldier and part of a Communist guerrilla group, he had to leave country and gone round the continent in wars, and since most countries speak Spanish there (with Brazil being an exception) he also became familiar with the language. As for the native blood, that's also very common in South America, so it fits.

And I know very well why it was Oliviera and later changed for Oliveira. It was simply a mistake… I’m BR, and I live in EU. People confuse my name all the time… I need to correct always… for some reason, non Portuguese speaker people have a lot of trouble understanding the vei and vie of this name, which include my oriental friends
I love Carlos in Re3R. He has a heart-warming personality, always care for Jill, so protective of her. I feel safe when he’s in the present. I hope Capcom will bring him back. Maybe a DLC or tell the story after he found out the truth about Umbrella, Carlos decided to collect evidences and expose them. Idk wishful thinking lol
He and Sheva are completely under appreciated

Ever since I saw the cover for RE3, I always figured I'd have some interest in Carlos. No doubt he turned into a really cool character for me. I even went so far as to cosplay him.
Also a post-credit artwork shows Carlos Oliveira apparently having a cruise date with Jill. Maybe they dated afterwards and parted ways.
I was pretty meh about the original Carlos, but good god they gave him such an upgrade in the RE3 remake. Not just visually either, he's such a damn likeable character. I kind of wish we could get to see more of him, but I also appreciate what we got.
Carlos is my favourite RE character and I loved this video! I hope we get to see him in another game in the franchise. Seeing Carlos content/appreciation makes me so happy!
I didn't care much for OG Carlos, with him being a bit of a creep and coming off too campy. But in the remake he is amazing. I'd love to see that Carlos come back at some point.

@@thisemptyworm4677 Not the only one. I'd say remake's Brad is better too. Then you've got side characters who basically had nothing to do in the original like Tyrell who are obviously better, but for most of the main characters they are mostly just different as opposed to better. I like both versions of Jill, Nikolai and Mikhail for example.

From what my mom said the spelling of the last name was most likely changed because of where he was meant to be from she’s Portuguese and her maiden name is actually Oliveira, she said that spelling is traditionally more associated with Portuguese lineage and the spelling Olivera is more Spain/Spanish. Idk how true that is but that’s what she said lol.

Carlos to me is the one and only improvement to the original RE3 (and the design of Nikolai). I love what they did to him in the remake but I hate that they used the same voice actor for Chris in Village, and the same goes for Heisenberg, mostly because the actors didn't change the voices at all while trying to represent a different character.

There is no 3make.
Maybe his parents were mixed. His mom could be Portuguese, Spanish, and his dad could be American. Or the other way around.
Carlos lived in America for most of the time, maybe he was born in one of the 2 countries his parents are from. The spellings of Oliveira changed in the movie might just be a mistake nothing else.

Thanks so much for this! I wasn't a huge fan of Carlos in the original RE3. I also wasn't sure how I felt when I saw his new revamped look in RE3 Remake pictures. But after playing this game several times now, Carlos is easily the best thing from the RE3 Remake lol. I just love his character and personality so much! I really, REALLY hope we see Carlos return in a future RE game. Or, at the very least, see a 1/8 scale figure of him. XD
Yet another under appreciated, and seriously under utilized, character in the RE franchise. Forget "golden boy" Chris Redfield, Carlos is the better choice for shipping with Jill because of how his story parallels hers at several key points. And of course, their being on opposing sides but united for a common purpose when they meet is a wonderful catalyst for their story.
Chris and Jill never matched as a couple to me, just very close friends and work partners

Im from Argentina and Carlos was always brazilian because of the surname. It's pretty obvious. Like people called "Gimenes" instead of "Gimenez", which is spanish.

Carlos meet Barry in canon, cus the epilogue of Barry said that he went to raccoon city before the bomb is launched and Nikolai is alive after re3 by the cards he sent to the ashford dude after re3 also the jill diary is canon to and that can only be filled with the pushing option so the ending were Carlos fly the plane is not canon

I used to have a prima's re3 strategy guide back in the day, and it said carlos was from Brazil South America.
Love Carlos so cute, sweet, and caring. But why is every Resident Evil character like 21 or younger when they start out. Leon looks at least 23/24, even in the newest game and Carlos looks 32 in the remake. I think the only age accurate character is Claire, since she looks young (though in the remake she looks 20/21 rather than 18).
So Capcom can use them in future installments. All the characters in this universe age with us. If Chris was 10 years older in the first game, he would be a little too old to be pulling off what he does in Village. It was a smart idea to start them all out very young.

Theory to Carlos' nationality: in my opinion, Venezuelan and Guyanese make the most sense, as since he carries indian blood, is from South America, and has a Portuguese last name, it leads to a country in the upper part of South America with a lot of mixed people, and those mixes are common in especially Guyana.
