I enjoyed seeing this inspiring video! Thanks. I live in Norway and recently acquired a Yucca rostrata. It is in a large pot. Here in the north, temperatures can be subzero for days on end although not far under freezing usually. The days also get much shorter in the winter, not to mention being overcast, so it is very unlike what you will have in Big Bend. It also snows in the winter and plenty of rain in the other seasons. My question is, would you recommend bringing the plant indoors during, say, December thru mid March and placing it in a south facing window? Thanks.
Looks like you offer much the same species that I use to purchase from Adams Ranch back in the 80s. I am glad to see that you are sustainable in your practices, as I believe the plants we use to purchase looked to be taken from the wild ( on private ranch land possibly). Your rostratas look great 👍

Hello Beans Cookin, The timing of your question could not be better because I just uploaded a second video addressing the issue of sustainable farm raised yucca vs wild dug yucca. Yes, yuccas are being dug out of the wild, but with increasing demand from the landscaping industry this is coming at a steep price for plants in the wild, especially for a plant like Yucca rostrata which grows in a very limited area of Far West Texas. Given a choice, buyers should choose farm raise over wild dug. Not only does the consumer get a better quality plant, but it saves the wild population from unneeded removal pressure. In fact, most wild dug rostratas are coming out of Mexico now, which is certainly not good for the population south of the border. I hate to say it, but the majority of wild diggers are looking for quick buck with little to no regard for the wild populations.

Great video! I live in New Jersey and have been addicted to the Rostratas for over 10 years now. And you are 💯 right. My first one I trimmed and the trunk rotted from our wet climate. Unfortunately I lost that plant. But have been very successful with three others by leaving the skirt to prevent excess moisture. I would love to know your prices.

I grew up in Amarillo, a place called Lake Tanglewood. Palo Duro Canyon was my 2nd "home".
I remember seeing Yucca everywhere. They also had huge sticks growing up the center; some with yellow and some with white flowers.
I don't know if I ever seen the trunk of one, except when I peeled the dead leavs off the bottom. Also when they died, they made excellent bonfire starters. Wow they burn hot and fierce. LOL
My question is this.
What type of Yucca could they most likely be, just off of geological location?
When they were strong and healthy, the leafs were sturdy, not really flexible, and so my friends and I would pluck 1, and we would play stab wars with them. They hurt, and it would make you bleed. 😆
My last time seeing them was at 15, now I'm 44.
My life was Yucca, both green and purple prickly pear, and mosquite trees.
I have a small cactus garden in my home, and I probably won't feel complete until I atleast get a few Yucca plants also!

Are the plants watered artificially, or is the rain enough in Pecos County? Rostrata is endemic to Brewster County, and their farm is probably the same. Grow very well and are treated professionally. Keep it up.
I would water it about every week- week and a half the first year, and then after that they are basically self sufficient.
If it is not raining, which is most of the time, I'll water the field of yucca every two weeks. I try to grow them faster than what mother nature can provide.
Don’t the tips of the Rostrata get a little black with so much water?
@@yonahful6215 No, that has not been an issue at my farm. Maybe in areas with high humidity, but here in the desert I have not experienced the tips turning a little black.
@@bigbendyuccacompany3955 Right, the humidity is fluctuating in our climate in Western Europe. You can’t compare maritime weather with your continental desert climate in the Southern Midwest, where the Rostrata is endemic. I guess you have snakes, scorpions and tarantulas by the plants..?

Yes, I've seen yuccas that have been planted very close together. It can be a very interesting form when given enough time to mature.

I'm planning to purchase one of your 2'6" for our newly xeriscaped yard here in the Denver suburbs, but I'm wondering how to prop it until the root structure spreads and it can withstand the heavy winds we get sometimes. Any suggestions? Also curious how old a 2'6" in plant is. Thanks!
Something as simple as rocks or blocks can be enough to support and stabilize your yucca. Next step up would be tent stakes or T posts and tie off your yucca from 3 or 4 sides. It should only take a month or two for your plant to grow new roots. There should be a new video up soon that talks about these ideas.

I have used the flower pedals in a salad but have not tried them in a soup. I will have to give that a try next Spring

Great video. I’m ordering the largest one. Question: will any new leaves grow from the trimmed trunk area itself? I have a tall planter, can the yucca be planter deeper in the planter but keep the soil just above the root ball as it should be to prevent root? I’m trying to minimize how much trunk is visible.
Thank you! So glad you liked the video, and I enjoyed talking with you on the phone. I like your idea of planting in a tall planter. While I normally recommend bringing your soil level up to the top of the planter, I know that you want to do something different. If I understand correctly, you want to fill you planter with soil about 2/3 and have just the leaves sticking up out of the pot. While I have never seen this done, I do think this could be a cool effect. Please be aware that sometimes in transplanting it is not uncommon to have some of the lower leaves turn yellowish, which in turn can be trimmed off or allowed to die and lay flush with the trunk. I do think it would be a good idea to leave enough space between the top of the pot and the bottom leaves to allow for watering and a bit of airflow/exchange. In time, the yucca will grow taller by growing up through the center spear, which will be putting out new leaves. I've had some of my yuccas at my house in large pots for up to 5 years. Eventually, it is a good idea to move your yucca into another larger pot and plant into a fresh batch of potting soil, or simply plant directly into the ground at a future date. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have further questions.
I live in Burnsville, MN and it is rated zone 4b. Do you think I could grow a rostrata or other yucca? We can grow yucca filamentosa easily, but we get about 45 inches of snow in winter and temps remain below freezing for months at a time.
Yucca rostrata is an amazingly cold hardy yucca that is good to Zone 5, so I think zone 4b is a bit too cold. If you have the indoor space, you could possibly grow a rostrata in a decorative pot and move it in during the coldest months.
@@bigbendyuccacompany3955 thanks! Yeah I’ve done that with faxoniana but also had luck overwintering that with cover and string lights, so I may try that too with rostrata.
@@opuntiad8100 Since the faxon, with a little bit of help, can survive your winter then the rostrata will have no issue.
