Actually people knew that the wild bison needed protection way before 1920. Superintendent Col. P.W. Norris explains in his paper "The Norris Suburban" how he was told by trappers who lived in Yellowstone had been slaughtering thousands of bison during his trips of 1870 & 1873. He also talks about the destruction of Yellowstone's gysers that needed protection. Once he became Superintended in 1887 he mentioned in the first Yellowstone Annual report that the bison must be protected! He hired the first gameskeeper "Rocky Mountain" Harry Yount in 1880 & also made the parks first rules & much more. My ancestor Superintendent Col. P.W. Norris should be known as an important American Figure but is a forgotten story lost in all of the old newspapers he's been in. At least his name still rests throughout much of the park!
Gone are the days where the true inhabitants the Indians had so much to give to the world a way of life a way to eat a way to fight diseases Mother Earth gave everything we needed to us sometimes the good things too much of a good thing is a bad thing in hindsight we needed everything that Indians could have taught us how to live together. Were still learning and striving to do better. God made and God will make away, all we have to do is listen and learn. after the loss of the wolves, they were reintroduced, which balanced out the animal ecosystem in Yellowstone. The reason the wolves were eliminated, is because, they were decimating the elk herds, so was a necessary step in conscientious stewardship of nature.
