- In 1939, Emma and Gus Thompson, a Black couple in Coronado, California, rented out a home to the Dongs, a Chinese American family, in the wake of racially restrictive housing laws. Now, the Dongs are donating $5 million to Black college students as a thank you to the Thompsons.

This is a wonderful, full-circle story. Look at what we can do when we work together.
People from the past are hard worker, compassionate and kind-hearted. Today generation are too toxic, laziness and entitlement.
Feel ya fam!!!...it would be so much love that jus living day to day would be a super high...there would be no need for pharmaceuticals...

How is this racism in the comments? This Asian family donated their $5M home in the name of the black family that sold it to them. It’s not like they took the home from a black family, they cherished what the black family did for them and now want to help others. It’s a great story.
So that their great-grandchildren can bypass Harvard's "personality assessment" for acceptance. But that still won't exempt them from California's reparations program.
Always a victim

ignorance, that's how
The privileged crying over this is typical and predictable. Just ignore.
As a Chinese American myself I find this story to be a very heart warming story. ❤
I hope there’s more friendship and cooperation between Asian Americans and the African American community, like them.
That would be great if we could come together. 🤍
❤
Don't hope. Make one. I myself did that and it's been a wonderful 21 years.
🇺🇸
@@kha9867 Now now there is nothing wrong with having hope we humans need it💯
This is a beautiful story. So glad to have heard it.
Both families are prime examples of kind thoughtful people
That is so kind and sweet. I learned about Chinese Americans and much more in my U.S history class and just hearing about this sounds so cool and it’s just really kind of them
Having grown up in San Diego, I'm so proud of this full circle gift😊
Umm Hollywood needs to be making a movie about this
Ugh.
White people don’t think about anything besides monetizing humanity.
How about we spread a story organically instead of fantasizing a genuine moment in time, forever tarnishing it’s impact in people’s minds?
💯
But they'll whitewash him
I agree.
they will recast the Chinese as Jews
Beautiful ❤. A family helping a family in need. The Thompson heir said it best "Paying it forward " i wish MORE people were like this. Just too many that "have" prefer to see the "have nots" stay in that zone😢
nah that's bureaucracy amongst families in the low class. I love it ❤
Very sweet. They should make a movie. ❤ These are the real stories we need to hear.
We all need a story like this ❤ , it’s crazy the world we live in now.
We all needed this beautiful story! Thanks for sharing, and blessings to all of you!
I know I did it made my day
I love that our history and contributions to America are coming more to light. Black people let’s hold our heads up. We are a great people!
And the most violent and crime prone.
@@nuttybar9
Do you actually have citations in MLA or APA format to back your claim?
They were mixed just like me. They weren't pure blk.
@@nuttybar9 Just about all thriving historic black communities businesses, schools, churches have been burned and massacred by white mobs claiming they want to protect white women. How is killing black women and children justified? White violence and crime has destroyed black communities and African nations. That's why books are being banned.
@@WhitePrivilegeDoesntExistButVi What is your point? You do know they were considered Black with the one drop of blood rule. But despite that they claimed Black with pride!
The history of this is so awesome
Paying it Forward is Beautiful Energy
This is how humans operate on both sides.
This is SUCH a beautiful story starting all those years ago from kindness, fairness and anti discrimination…….. wonderful full circle…..giving.
What is with the racist comments? Jeez, let’s appreciate the positivity. Bless these people.
Conservatives dont like ANY form of reparation or ANY type of hand out to black people. Gifts, etc. its how its always been
They hate themselves
@@lobsterblacc9478 Right? And everyone else to boot. Can’t celebrate a minute of positivity in this depressing world. SMH.
A “certain group” feels threatened when there is no need to be threatened.
First time on the internet?
Talk about integrity of the Chinese family of this generation l when it’s so easy to forget about the past their ancestors went through. Man I get it!! That was the house of the Thompsons at one time. So talk about full circle in a fabulous way!! Only people that have a clean good heart can actually do the right thing! It’s hard for a lot of us to imagine giving away 5M !
This is the caliber of News that needs to become a major focus on all News Stations across the U.S.
These 2 amazing families are the kind of American citizens who lead by EXAMPLE & are still TRAILBLAZERS that we all need to learn about, especially in the field of EDUCATION!!
I hope the City of Coronado & their School Board create an inclusive & incredible education program based on their true past!
I have vacationed in Coronado for over 10 years & I knew the history of how this fancy hotel was built by immigrants & attended by the rich along with all their staff, housekeepers, nannies, butlers, etc.
Great Story👍🤗👏👏!!
Great story. Reminds me of the recent story about how southern blacks who moved to SF moved into what is now Japantown after the Japanese-Americans were interned during WWII. These people kept and stored everything the Japanese-Americans left behind with care and reverence so that these artifacts remain to this day.
Also reminds me of the story about Bruce’s Beach, also somewhere in Southern California.
1890-1920, a thriving community in the city of Coronado and maybe other California cities as well. What injustices all the way around to today, 100 years later.
"Japanese-Americans were interned during WWII."
Interned? Do you mean they were rounded up and forced into concentration camps?
@@iu2 well yeah, that's what "interned" means. Sometimes open a dictionary.

This great news has been banned in a majority of Florida schools.

Fascinating story! Can you tell me what Kevin Ashley’s involvement stems from? He seems like a very interesting and thoughtful person.
What a beautiful story! 😢
I am black and I'm not from the US, but the black community should come together and do something for the Asian community as well. 💓
First of all, why? Why should we come together and do something for a community that by in large dont like us? Absolutely not. Secondly mind your business. Youre not a blk American so you have no clue what goes on over here. Thanks
Did you not listen to the story? A black family were the only people who would LET a home to the Chinese family. That is why they are donating 5 mill to a black organisation. Open up your ears.
I appreciate you.
@@CandaceP-dd9gxyou sound like a dumb child 😅
This story started when a Black family rented and then sold that house to his father. Back in the days where exclusionary laws meant that people could not live in certain neighborhoods. Those laws were specific to Blacks and Chinese.
I love paying it forward and giving someone a hand up!!🙏👌❤️
Absolutely beautiful. It started with the Thompson’s act of defiance by selling it to this family. And, I love that they acknowledge AND give back to honor that gesture. Both of these families exemplified what we can do when we work together. I would love a follow-up story where they catch up with some of the Thompson descendants… I think it would be cool to include them if any are still around.
As a African American I love Chinese culture I pray we all get along
The more you know, the more you will open up your minds and you will understand and realize we all have been lied to about the many cultures of people of color and their contributions to society..
These are the American stories of triumph and hope that the rest of the work loves hearing about 🙏
What a beautiful sentiment, It's refreshing to hear about acts of kindness and compassion in a world that can often feel overwhelming and chaotic. I can only hope this story would have an impact on others and be a lesson to us all...
God bless them 🙏🏿
I believe that good like this, good actions, good intentions, … counts 1,000 times more than the bad things that are usually portrayed in the media. Not all of us can make such a generous gift and statement, but we can all do good in small ways at least. Thank you for this inspiration.
Their generosity is priceless.
God help au all❤❤❤
Wow that's very kind
Common belief in Chinese families that we always pay back or return to people we feel grateful and thank you. Similarly, we take care of our parent because they take care of us when we were young and we need to take care of them when they are old.
It is and was a beautiful story❤Thank you
This is so beautiful. I'm sure that if more people traced their success back to black people they would be absolutely astonishingly wealthy. Black people have made contributions over the years that are just untold. If only more people would pay it forward ❤ good for them to never forget. Yes this absolutely should be made into a movie.
you could say the same about any other race. Your comment is pretty racist for implying that only black people have untold stories.
❤Now this is an absolutely beautiful story.I love seeing and hearing stories about ppl with different backgrounds & race coming together with happy endings.Thank you for putting this story together for all to see.

Difficult to possibly believe but there were many thriving Black Communities all over this country that we built but were not allowed to take part in. Unfortunately most of them, with their residents, were also whiped out. Now enters the era of erasure to cover it all up.
Same thing with irish people. Blacks were mostly enslaved and were used to build, but irish people and chinese were also part of being enslaved. But no one ever talks about them as much as Africans.
@@Buttsceatcgee"Mostly enslaved"? Black people were enslaved. No question about that. Second point is that the Irish were never enslaved in the US, they were indentured laborers. Indentured laborer did face exploitations, however the difference was that they had legal rights, they were not considered property like African Americans (chattel slavery)and neither was their indentured servitude was not generation ( as in their descents would be forced to be indentured labourers) whereas with African Americans, they were slaves for life as well as their descendants. Also the Irish were later included as "White"so they didn't experience the same race based discrimination as African American and Black people did then. As for the Chinese, they were also exploited and faced varioud race-based discrimination but they did not experience chattel slavery in the US like the African Americans.
You are more than free to create awareness about what the Irish and Chinese went through but if you genuinely care about this (and not just randomly bringing this up because you feel upset and insecure that Black American history and the hidden parts of it is being highlighted), then make sure you get the facts straight and stop with the false equivalencies to the chattel slavery that African Americans experienced.
@@Buttsceatcgee You can bring attention to this history of the Irish and the Chinese in the US if you are genuine about this and is not just something that you are bringing up to take away from this parts of Black American history ( or anything about Black American history and the Black American people). No one is stopping you.
But get the facts straight: the Irish people did not experience slavery and it is a false. They were indentured labourers in the US while they did experience exploitation . They did not experience chattel slavery like African Americans, which meant that they were not considered as property, they had legal rights unlike African Americans, and their indentured servitude was not for life nor was it something that was passed onto their generations after them ( hereditary) like with what happened with African Americans. And chattel slavery in the US was certainly race-based.Also at a later stage, the Irish were considered "White" so again that was anger way that they would not experience discrimination in the same way as African Americans, especially not in terms of racism.
The Chinese were also exploited when they came to the US and experienced various forms of racism but they did not experience chattel slavery like African Americans.
@@ButtsceatcgeeThe truth is that the Irish were indentured labourers and were not enslaved
@@dinamothupi996 sure they got somewhat paid but their wages were very low and people refused to pay them any more because of their beliefs to the point they were the most hated in Europe and in the US. Plus, they were still forced and treated as slaves sent for labor in different countries.
This is a beautiful story!
