How To Get Eric Clapton's Guitar Tone For While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- George Harrison invited Eric Clapton to play on his song While My Guitar Gently Weeps. They wanted the guitar to sound like it was weeping and also Beatle-y. We'll show you our process of recreating that sound.
Listen to the final result here:

Andrew seriously rocking that late '60s, early '70s look. Way too cool.
Andrew's gone full hippie haha, classic
He looks like Jesus
you guys dont mess around, the same equipment, paint finishes, instruments etc as the Beatles did when they recorded. You guys are second to none, and continually blow us away.
Us beatles fans are lucky literally everything they ever used has been reissued at least once
AbsoFABalutely ...
You forgot to mention he even wears the same shirt they would have worn back then lol
Actually, Lucy was originally Eric's. He gave it to George. When he picks him up in his car and asked him to join The Beatles on a session, Eric told him that he didn't have a guitar. George to,d him that he had that covered. His old red 57 Les Paul.
Andrew looks straight out of the 70s with that outfit and hair lol
You’re thinking David Spade!
@@9iwthyh6 hell yeah lmao
For those poor like me and have no pedals:
Guitar with the bridge and neck pickup
Compressor
Bass and middle: mid range
Treble: slightly above middle
Gain: a super small amount, not to a point where there’s distortion, just enough to get the tone to have a good punch
Once you record it, copy and paste the track to another track with the same amp settings to double track it. To get the sound of the ADT, you need to paste the track just slightly later than the original. To put in music terms, probably about one 128th note. Probably even less but you get the idea. Just barely delayed.
If you were to copy and paste the track to where it’s exactly in time with the original, nothing will change and you won’t get the sound of an ADT. it’ll just make the guitar sound a bit louder.
My God fellas. That tone is so so close and he murdered that part. Fuck. Every note I was like please keep hitting every note perfectly... and he did hahaha those bends were all so flawless. I feel like your Dad by saying this but I’m literally proud of you haha. The vibrato on the bends was literally Clapton man. Gosh guys so much fun to watch I’m sending this to all my friends and I just subscribed if this is what goes down on your channel.
That Bassman sounds killer. Eric used a crunching blonde 1964 Bassman or the blackface deluxe in the studio, so not too far from the same amp!
Excellent process of recreation! I would have sworn the effect was a bit of chorus, but it makes sense that it was ADT. Thank you for posting. BTW, here's a little story about "Lucy". She was originally a gold top LP owned by John Sebastian and then by Rick Derringer who ended up not liking how it played after he had Gibson refinish it cherry red sunburst. Derringer traded it in at a guitar shop for another guitar. A week later Eric Clapton came into that same shop, played Ricks red LP and then bought it and used it on WMGGW. Later, he gave it to George Harrison as a gift. Years later it was stolen from George when his house was broken into, and Lucy disappeared for a while. She ended up in Mexico, and when George found this out he contacted the owner in Mexico through intermediaries and he was able to get the guitar back only after he was forced into acquiring a laundry list of vintage guitars the owner wanted as a trade (ransom). Lucy has been around!
I have to say that you guys nail the tones. You even have to duck the copyright because it is so close.
This is a great reproduction of the sound of that solo, as far as it goes. I think there's one little ingredient that would put it over the top. I recall Harrison saying they added what he called "the wobbler", some effect that added a slight vibrato to the guitar sound, that I hear on the original. I don't know if that was a setting on the ADT or something else, but I think there was some sort of subtle modulation put on that solo.
This is just nit-picking, you guys did a great job recreating an iconic solo, as usual.
The wobbler IS the ADT
@@siradri you are correct. The ADT is what produces the wobble effect
Cheers Neil! You're the man!
I've been thinking of this for a while
I believe Clapton gifted "Lucy" to George prior to the recording of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as I recall hearing Clapton speaking about doing it and saying that he didn't bring a guitar as he knew George had a good Les Paul. Also, I've read that Clapton said the solo didn't sound "Beatley" enough.
WOW, PERFECT...ITS THE PLAYING MORE THAN ANYTHING.
Because I’m not a musician 👩🎤 I don’t know 🤷♀️ what you all are talking about the “ADT” etc, but your music sounds soooo awesome 😎 I love listening to you guys!
Linda Cole - Right haha. That is Artificial Double Track. This was done in the 60s on tape by sending a signal out of a machine using two outputs to duplicate the track. With an oscillator they were able to control the speed by hand, which gives the sound a wobble effect
@@AblyHouse thank you for explaining that! ❤️
Ha this is so easy, "ADT" means, "at da time" very surprised you didn't know that. 🤣😂🙃😊
Fuck man, you got every bend just like the recording. I can tell you’ve been playing that solo for years cause of how good you are at it.
Love the fit Andrew
A long winding signal path, from the guitar to the tape on which everything is recorded.
GooD)))))))
No question about it, this dud entailed it! It really is a mating what they had to go through to get this sound. To my ears it was just right.
Great stuff. Thanks guys.
I have always read that Clapton was the one who said "It's not Beatle-y enough", not George.
Clapton himself said that, and I *think* I read one of the engineers quoted as saying that (cannot remember if that would have been a Second Engineer or not).
You are correct, it was Eric who said it. Very cool. Thanks!
it's amazing to finally come across fellow engineers who don't closemic the shit out of guitarcabs. This was and still is the way to record an amp. Closemiking the cab will have you record a speaker and not the charateristics of the amp.
Thank you, I cannot stand the sound of a 57 pressed into the grill cloth of an amp. I mean, If it works for something it works. I just can’t stand that people don’t think you can mic an amp any other way
@@neilcandeloramusic Agree! My teachers (old dudes who had training from engineers from EMI/Abbey Road/Air Studios) All where educated like this. Only for certain effects they would push it against the grill. It's the upcoming PA/Live engineers from the early 80s who found out you could make your live mixes louder by closemiking things. This works great for that live but in the studio you're only adding problems this way.
For example why closemic if you're gonna cut out the proximity effect anyway? Why not set the (the right mics) on the position the guitarist enjoys the sound of his amp. And if you feel you need more bass or treble , just ask the guitarist to had it on the amp!
@@VijverEendje that’s a great point, why get more low end if you’re just gonna cut it out anyways
Awesome video! Will you guys do an early Beatles tone demonstration. You could go through a bunch of the VOX AC settings and guitars for different songs.
Loove all your videos...awesome gtr playing ..im a profesional musician and singer in my country Chile and a Beatle fan since I was 8 yrs old...and your perfomances of The beatles tunes are spot on. The tone of your Lucy is exact to The one Eric had on while My guitar. All My Best regards from Southamerica!!
Loving the facial fuzz, Andrew!
Sounds like a jimi hendrix guitar pedal
@@zenon459 I’d buy that! I don’t eh play guitar!
This was a fun watch. Amazing collection of music gear. Thanks for the shout out.
Just re-watched this. Love it.
Okay but holy crap you actually look a bit like eric
Or David Spade.
That's Awesome it makes my skin chills 😀
Greg Allman lives!
Wow. What great studio you guys have.❤️
1:39 thats hilarious
👍😎👍
Awesome! Since you brought it up maybe a quick rundown on George's Roll Over Beethoven lead. Andrew- your performance video on Rollover is fantastic.
Cheers guys, it sounds amazing and you grow as producers and engineers you get much and better gear after that you record and produce using pc plugins even in that moment you sound pretty good but now fellas you reached a new level
You guys are friggen AWESOME!!!✌️
4:23 going for the Tom Petty look ;-) Nicely done boys!!!
Awesome video!! Love seeing the nuts and bolts/behind the scenes of the operation
you guys are fucking amazing💘 i can’t wait to see what y’all do
One of the best channels on UA-cam.
If you want to do a budget adt effect, use a harmonist pedal at the unison setting and a rotary pedal.
Very cool! When I play this song live, I use the carbon copy modulate setting, then set the delay speed fast enough that it's hardly noticeable
@@AblyHouse It gets me there, it's not bad but it aint great either.
Excellent video guys, they surprise me more And more
great videos ably house people! as always
hell yeah
Man, you guys are so amazing! I can’t believe how good that guitar sounds on that 1969 amp. And how freaking cool is that guitar?
Hi Andrew and Neil great video (as always)! I'm totally obsessed with the album preview and planning to pre order the vinyl. Also, Neil I love the work you did with Tyson Kelly on his new EP:) Can't wait for the next video!
hot damn, you guys really stepped up the gear game... hell yeah 🤙
Magnífico me encanta este canal puedo seguir sus cover para aprenderlos yo igual
Yo también
@@gabrielloyola2966 joder así es
Very very cool!
So far my I was going to text you and mention the ADT effect, and immediately you guys went right to it!!
I’m laughing cuz you guys are the bomb!!!
So freaking cool, you don’t miss a damn thing. I LOVE IT!
Do you have vids of your use of ADT on vocals? You know first song they used ADT on right? (I’m sure you do lol)
sejrec56 - Thanks man! I know ADT came about around Revolver and most of the songs have it. Tomorrow Never Knows being an early one recorded does not, that uses the Leslie and a manual double track. Which would you say is first?
@@AblyHouse DR Robert was the first they used it on , on vocals and sounds like guitar too but definitely vocals.
Even Badfinger used it a bit while recording at Apple. But you guys are great man. I totally dig your obsessive tributes. And again I’m so pleasantly surprised you guys at your young age know so much about, Music, Beatles, almost anything related to Beatles. And I can tell how intensely you’ve listened to Beatles songs, and recordings, and processes, Amps, guitars, mics used etc..
Hell yeah!!
Anyone else getting Ethan hawke vibes from neil
When I heard that song as a kid on my brother’s stereo I thought the player was broken
I was so waiting for this! Great job!
Look forward to seeing the Lucy Les Paul in your future videos for Beatles songs.
Bravissimo sei un grande w the Beatles continuate così.
Wow this is very Eric
Awesome video!! From Josh
ADT's Flanging/Chorusing was also used on Claptons guitar...
wow it’s Tom Evans and Joey Molland playing Beatles
Clapton loved recording with a 5 watt tweed Fender Champ around that time and into the 70s. If you can get your hands on a 5 watt Fender Champ- give it a whirl. It may not have been used during this session since he was a guest- but it’s possible he brought it with him.
Great job ive got a Dumble 68 bassman ultra phonic so I was smiling the entire time.
its for sale if anyone is interested im in Texas north of Dallas
I love how productive you are during lockdown lol
wow!!!! so well done!!!
Sounds amazing guys! There's just one thing I'm left wondering: with the volume on the amp at 4.5, how high do you have the guitar turned up?
They said guitar volume is on 10
You look handsom
Yea very
thanks
HELL YEAH
HELL YEAH
Very close sounding sound,so it is,sounding!
WOW !!
Andrew's guitar skils is proportional to his apperance - amazing!! PS I Love you...nah
The Altec 436 is a single channel Vari Mu Tube Compressor. now edited for correction UP's Royal Compressor Plugin is based on the EMI/Abbey Road RS124, have to get one!
Adt its magic
Does anybody have an idea on how I can achieve a similar sound in guitar rig 6? would be so cool!
Clapton had already gifted the guitar to George before the session.
40k subscribers!!!
Eric gave the Les Paul to George before the While my guitar gently weeps session.
It looks just like a Telefunken U-47
On the bus...
Hell yeah
The guitar solo was totally spot on . I’ve also played it nearly identical to the way you play it. And it definitely sounds like it was played this way but Clapton has claimed he played it with a slide?
I think maybe he’s mistaken after all these years. Maybe he tried it on slide first on a take not used, but it sounds exactly the way YOU PLAY IT!
What are your thoughts on this Andrew?
Thanks! I’ve never heard a quote of Clapton claiming he played it slide on this song and there’s no moments where we thought it sounded like a slide. So hopefully we did it right!
@@neilcandeloramusic well Clapton’s solo doesn’t sound like a slide to me either
@@neilcandeloramusic I think you guys did it right. The interview with Clapton was I think when he was reflecting about his getting ready to play at Bangladesh, and how he grabbed the wrong kind of guitar to play the Guitar Gently Weeps solo, and he had brought up that he originally played the solo on slide, but here he was with the wrong guitar, making it extremely difficult for himself ...
Neil, do you record at 48K ? If not start now! And turn Oversampling or HQ ON, on all your plugs that have that feature! And don't do Offline Renders, Render in Online Mode OR bounce to Two Track like you do! It's CPU munching , so leave HQ until final Mixdown.
I usually do 48k and then when I start doing mix downs through the altec I bump up to 96k. I bounce to tape and back at 96k as well, a few times I’ve managed to go 192k to the tape and back. But I couldn’t monitor at all, which was very difficult. So since then I’ve been sticking with all tracking 48k, and then 96k when I start going through real analog gear. I’d love to do it all at 96k - but I literally melted a HD to a computer doing a session all in 96k once so I’m a little scared to go back haha
Hi
3:52 the moment you're waiting for.
This whole video could have been:
Get someone who can play like Clapton. Give 'em a Les Paul and run it through ADT.
Looks like you're using Yamaha HS speakers, are those 7 or 8s? Looking at purchasing a set but keep hearing too many mixed reviews
Also have you used ADT on any of your Vocals yet? Love to hear comparison side by side before/After.
There’s a Keely guitar pedal that you can use in guitar in mono or stereo in studio or stereo amps Keeley 30 MS Double tracker pedal, even approved by the great Paul McCartney too. I have this pedal. Does the ADT in your computer program run multiple channels at once? Or is it only one mono track at a time. And which program is it? Are you running Mac?Ive forgotten, I’m sure you said in other videos but I’ve forgotten. But the ADT output is stereo right ? For my own curiosity. Remember I’m as obsessed as you are lol.
It’s a waves plug-in. You have multiple options. The standard (stereo) version of it has the original track plus the ADT track and you can control each separately with pan, drive, phase - there’s a mono version of this without panning. Then there’s another version where you can have the source track plus 2 separate ADT tracks. Usually good for leaving the source in the middle and then having 2 separate ADT tracks panned out.
It’s a decent plug-in, I’ve used on quite a bit of things, I most often use it on vocals and guitars. There’s still a “digital” sound to it, I wish I could have the real thing of course. But this still is a cool plug-in.
LUCY guitar for playing?
So funny this guitar is a Chibson. I was looking at the cutaway, thinking, 'it looks just like an Epiphone cutaway. Have Gibson also changed the shape...?"
HOw would you try to emulate ADT if you were using a modeler? Like an HX stomp, FM3, Kemper etc etc
I use an MXR carbon copy delay with the mod effect when I am playing live. I turn the regen and delay to their shortest setting. I’m sure the kemper can something similar
@@AblyHouse thanks for the reply. I'll see what i can do. I'm using an ampero stomp.
Cheers
Not bad .
Wasn’t a Leslie involved?
No - they ran it through ADT. Chris Thomas (assistant and at times main white album producer) said it was his duty to sit there and make the tape wobble for the lead guitar.
Comment two
I was the third person that watch the old version of while my guitar gently weeps
@@gabrielloyola2966 -wow, really?!
Where's the Leslie?
John was using it for the organ. When they finished Eric wanted it to sound more beatle-y and George suggested using the ADT
kewl ! now explain why there's 12 eggs in a pack genius hair-boy .
What pedal would you use?
Ive been liking the Beano Boost for a little extra sustain and top end. I think we just turned the amp loud for this, but it could have used a bit more I think
Pretty sure he used a Bluesbreaker on the original
I thought this video came from 10 years ago
Please teach me more simple way.
You are going to replace the tuning machines with Grovers right?
seems kinda disrespectful now to listen to it via headphones... sometimes just via phone speakers 😅
A couple of years ago my son tried with the limited equipment we had. I think without so much attack it would have sounded much better, but I couldn't reduce it. ua-cam.com/video/vD_iNFOqVF8/v-deo.html

What
is your dad really rich or something?
Lulz no .
More brightness, more gain, and check out the phrasing of Eric.
Keep on trying, I know you can my friends.
I would disagree - Go to our isolated video and A/B it to the actual isolated track. We got pretty in the weeds with it.
Maybe you should buy a Proper Gibson Les Paul
maybe you should
Patience mate, this is better than the SG.

I should have made it clear what you were hearing included the room sound coming from the monitors into the Canon mic. The final result is here ua-cam.com/video/RULZBEzgu2g/v-deo.html
