i love this song. Its a masterpiece, never ever gets old. Just as good now as it was in 1978.
If we could only freeze time...
Masterpiece indeed
I remember the first time i heard this song on the radio in 1978. I had no idea who The Cars were at the time but they sounded like no other band. Hard to believe that was almost 45 years ago...

RIP the two members of The Cars
Ric Ocasek (March 23, 1944 - September 15, 2019), aged 75
Benjamin Orr (September 8, 1947 - October 3, 2000), aged 53
You both will be remembered as legends.

I was a DJ at my school in the Soviet Union in 1984. At the disco, I included this song three times in a row. The Сars band was one of my favorites on my playlist.
Interesting & cool! I always thought 'Western' music wasn't really available back then,in the USSR or other communist countries.
@@markhealey9409 This is true. It was quite possible to obtain recordings of famous Western groups in the Soviet Union at that time. Although vinyl records fetched huge prices on "the black market", tape recordings of these records were more affordable.
what other songs from the eightees were your favorite ones?
@@rockwhk , There were many groups. They mainly represent the style of synth-pop and new wave. I remember groups like Depeche Mode, Men at Work, Yazoo etc. But for some reason, in addition to the songs of the The Cars, I especially remember the song "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles.

Rough few days between Ric & Eddie. At least they left us a lot of great music. Feeling sad though.
What did he die from?
@@charleshall9755 It's a long name I can't remember how it's spelled but it's artery blockages. He had surgery and was recovering and passed away a few days later.

I love the way Ben smiles when he sings, beauty and masculinity
I LOVE the way he says “and, you look so fancy I can tell” 😭❤️

The Cars were an anomaly. Little bit New Wave, little bit classic rock, and a whole lotta cool. No wonder their songs are still all over the radio.
The Cars rocked, I agree, one of the best bands ever. They jelled. Miss them and Ben.

Elliot is very much respected in the guitar community. The guy’s a fantastic player.
Love Ben's voice, so sultry and rockin
I'd agree. He's one of the reasons I play guitar. Wow. That's all you can say. Wow.
I've been playing lead guitar for decades now.. Elliott Easton is one of my favorites hands down just a great player

Benjamin Orr- so gorgeous and talented

Great band. Debut album was epic. RIP Ben and Ric
What a beautiful voice! What a great song! What a great band! Among my best memories. RIP Ben and Ric.
Ben Orr, such a rare talent and voice. RIP
Beautiful voice.
Yes, Ben was beautiful and fabulously talented, and I cannot understand how anybody could confuse the melodic warmth and range of Benjamin's voice with Ric's - light years difference. From Patricia H. not William H.'

Yup
Coolest pic in rock - Ben with a rose stem in his mouth

What was cool about The Cars was that there's never been another band before or since that sounds anything like them. They were truly unique. That's _very_ rare in the music industry, where most ever band/singer sounds like everybody else around them, with the same "sound of the moment." And their music was incredible. Can't even believe this album is now going on 42 years old. The other day on my lunch break I was sitting in my car eating and listening to this very album, marveling at how kick ass it still is, and how much it eclipses present day music. Proud to say this was the music I was raised on. :)
Very true :) I agree, warm regards from Tasmania
I guess they're just what we needed.🎹🥁🎸🎤🎶📻😎
His voice wasn’t like that he could hit high notes and everything, but his sound is just amazing. The way he sings “as long as it was deep, yeah” and “you always knew to wear it well and you look so fancy i can tell”. Seriously, am i the only one who just can’t get over the way he says “and” and “yeah” ??
@@phebedezwart5870 Subtle and very effective.

Amazing song for the 70's, it sounded so different ot the other music at the time, Cars were really on top of the 80's pop sound before the 80's

This song gave us a glimpse into the beginning of the 80s when everyone was still drunk on disco. (I still love disco).

I think Ben and Ric are once again jamming. RIP, Ric.
Thank you for being such a huge part of my teenage background. 💗
How many memories of my youth are intertwined with this song and others like it? The Cars did all of us a huge favor who had this song as a backdrop to our defining moments. Pounding out of the speakers as we cruised, giving us the beat at the prom, amping up the atmosphere on "that date with that girl". Amiright?
They gave us a soundtrack for all of the times of our lives that even though they weren't epic or amazing to anybody else, THEY WERE EPIC TIMES TO US because when Ric took us by the hand and told us this story...it was our story!
Play on, Ric! The thing you loved doing was just what I needed as I grew up. Peace, man.

Rest peacefully. You're just what I needed. Won't ever forget your music with the cars. Fly high and rock on
God bless the precious memory of Ric and Ben. RIP and my heartfelt gratitude to both for leading such an incredible and important band. They were all so supremely talented. I don't know of a better example of a "whole being greater than the sum of its parts". As a native Clevelander, I've always been a little more partial to Ben, though. Always preferred his vocals over Ric's. I'll always be thankful that I got to see them early on at the Agora Theater in Cleveland (1978). What can you say? Elliott Easton is a gifted lead guitarist, David Robinson was great on drums, and Greg Hawkes did a little bit of everything from keys to 🎷 sax and everything in between. I'll always consider their debut album to be one of the most important and progressive albums in punk/new wave history. Not too many bands more deserving of a spot in the RRHOF in my opinion.
One of the lucky ones to have experienced growing up in the 80’s to the songs of one of of the most unforgettable bands...thank you for defining the sound of our youth...RIP Ocasek and Orr
One of my favorite songs from the Cars. I had a high school crush, when I was a Senior, in High School, and this song, the lyrics expressed how I felt, every time I saw the most beautiful girl in our school. This is exactly how I felt, when she was near: "When you're standing all so near, I kinda Lose my mind." That's right! I was in Heaven.
I wish Rhino would digitalize and HD, these music videos. We have a new Generation who needs to appreciate this legendary Modern Rock Group. RIP Benjamin Orr, and Rick Ocasek. Your music and lyrics will be in our hearts

One of America's Greatest Rock Bands!
To hear them on the radio, you kind of just passively listen because they are always on, but when you intently pay attention, you realize just how good these guys were. Ben's voice and how he pronounced his words gave the songs a grunge type of style, yet they sounded very rock and roll as well. Incredibly unique sound that will live on. What a band!
