- It's been a while since we mentioned the donkeys - so here's an update. They're lovely! Nothing like the horses in character (and why should they be?) we've really enjoyed getting to know them since they arrived back in the winter and they add a lot to our set-up here. We only have two pets here - the dogs, Annie and Bob - everyone else has to earn their keep. This video shows how we're getting there with the donkeys Nell and Eeyore..

I have been showing this video to kindergartners and first graders in our school library, after reading them the book "The Wonky Donkey." The kids are all enraptured by watching the donkeys in the video and listening to the calm, peaceful narration. It's so sweet. Thank you for sharing. We are in Portland, Oregon, U.S.
If you were a bit closer we would bring the donkeys into the classroom too : - )

Bless you for what you're doing for the children, and for yourself, Donkeys are wonderful, I have 3 mini's, 3 Mammoth Donkeys that I rescued from Kill Pens.
I'm working on them to trust me, and learning to be more Patient.

Thank you Oneda. Yes, they are adorable. We didn't know anything about them before they arrived, but they've settled in very well and we're lucky to have them.
Wonderful to see your handling and the training for therapy. We've been on Donkey Sanctuary courses in their behaviour which were really interesting - we're hoping to foster some soon!

Thank you for this, really enjoyed it and learned a lot. I am interested in miniature burros for therapy or for a fun activity for kids (riding) at summer or church camps. I live near the Pleasant Valley Donkey Rescue center in San Angelo, Texas and am thinking about adopting, but they rarely have miniatures. I grew up riding them as a child in Arkansas and it was such a wonderful and rewarding experience and would love for other young children to experience them as I, so fortunately, was able to. They can be such sweet creatures, but ornery sometimes, too! Best wishes to you and thank you for what you are doing.

Angie Taylor, there are therapeutic farms all over the US. You could certainly do a google search for one in your area. We’ve lived in several different states, and there was usually one within easy driving distance wherever we’ve lived.

Donkeys are very cautious creatures, and very sensitive and alert, too. They watch their handler carefully. So if you show them that the dog is trustworthy and friendly, that you are ok and confident with the dog, and the dog doesn't bark at them or snap at their legs or tail, then over time, they will get used to them and accept them. That's how things worked with our dogs here anyway. Best of luck, Sandra
