It really depends on the youth and their issues. The kids I work with usually have been abused in one way or another so their trauma shows up in different types of behaviour, which can include cruelty to animals. With these kids I usually like larger animals under close supervision. They need to be very calm, which helps regulate the youth. With children that are not a risk to animals, smaller can be better. They can snuggle into a lap and stay put which gives a very positive message to the children. The fact that the animals don't talk at them and just accept them for who they are goes a long way to helping them find calm in their very busy brains.
Sadly they are. We actually have a couple of animal therapy programs in our area that we use. My wife often takes animals from our farm to the pre-school she manages. Over the years I have had dogs that I would use with the kids I worked with, they did more good than me quite often.

Cyprus is just the right place to have one - it's too wet here for them really. Yes, we'll put more videos up when we have the time!
