  • The European unions motorcycle specific Euro 5+(5B) emissions standards are set to be implemented on the 1st January 2025. These will require all motorcycles registered after that date capable of exceeding 130Kmh to be fitted with Realtime catalyst monitoring equipment, which will put the machine into limp mode if the bike fails to comply.

It’s very odd, I’ve noticed the slip over two decades, you do have to keep it proportional, but it’s what I’ve experienced, we generally jump on it from certain headlines, mcn from twenty years ago was retrospective of certain limitations coming from Brussels toward limitation, I can appreciate their viewpoint, but it’s counterproductive, a larger machine, generally means greater control, the limitations on emissions are just absurd for me, I’ve cycled through my local town and the fumes from the cars were more offensive, cracking down on motorcycles?, invariably we’re the last to hear when government proposals jump ahead.
I don’t mean that to sound alarmist, but it does feel like a creeping tide.

I’ve said for a long time that the ‘so called’ environmental systems on modern engines, that put them into limp mode when they don’t get the right signal from various sensors, are actually taking what are perfectly good cars, (with years of use left in them) off the road. If we were truly concerned about the environment we would be making cars that lasted much longer and encouraging owners to keep their cars instead of replacing them every three years. Modern cars and motorcycles are perfectly capable of doing 200,000 plus miles. The days of vehicles being knackered after 100,000 miles are long gone but, what does kill them off is the cost of replacing environmental systems that put them into limp mode and the repair cost is more than the value 😡

I actually believe that we now live in an era where cars and bikes barely capable to reach 100.000mls; and also a lot of people are so brainwashed that they think, owning anything with more then 60.000 miles on the clock, is high mileage.
I see that on my colleagues and a good friend of mine, who still can't gasp that my car from 2010 with +150.000mls on the clock runs better, feels better as his much newer BMW, what is at least twice a year in the garage for issues.
I drive since 1997, and always had older cars. In my view, our society peaked in the 90s. Cars, bikes, music - a lot of things from that era are like tanks compared to the new garbage out there. Even my motorbike from 2004, what has an engine from the 90s in it, is bulletproof.
But I agree, and I'm not a fan of EVs, that cars would actually make the best use example of owning it long term, basically 10 years or till the battery reaches 50%.

I was talking to a colleague about this the other day. In the UK we could all top using our bikes and cars tomorrow and the effect globally would be negligible. So this push towards EV's will achieve nothing except to break this country financially and socially. Nearly every car commercial on TV now shows an EV and I'm sick of seeing them. Labour have pledged to bring the ICE ban forward again to 2030 and I've asked them what they intend to do about motorcycles. Do they intend to lazily lump them in with everything else or do the intelligent thing and actually consider them as a sustainable form of transport in the future? I've not had a reply 🙄

    • @lowersaxon
      @lowersaxon 2 місяці тому +3

Every motorized vehicle will be banned. EV‘s will be banned as well. Its simply impossible, absolutely impossible to swap each and every ICE into an EV. EV’s have to keep up the sheep’s hope for some time and then it will argued that „its not possible, sorry“. Bicycles are finally left and bicycle private mobility is what they finally intend.

BTW, Russian laws enforces regular inspection of vehicles older than 4 years, during which emmission test is also performed. So if you remove malfunctioning emission equipment, you won't be allowed on the road. Or at least, you shoudn't be - sadly, many inspection stations are prone to corruption. And more to that - e.g. there are multiple factories in my hometown that heavilly exceed NOx & hydrogen sulfide emissions, but they also just pay fines and then bribe local authorities to not have a warrant for stopping operations until emmission requirements are met. And that make all traffic emissions fade.

About stopping on the round-a-bout, Stuart. For 20 years, I lived close to a major general hospital. I stopped my car on one particular round-a-bout which I crossed on average more than once a day probably 1 in 50 times for speeding ambulances approaching the hospital. Not only I stopped but upon approaching the round-a-bout, I found myself held up by others who had stopped to allow the easier passage of ambulances. In any event, as you can say with greater authority than most, there is nothing illegal about stopping on a round-a-bout per se. There are, of course, matters of obstruction but giving way to an ambulance can NEVER be regarded as obstruction. Unfortunately, UA-cam comments so frequently expose the lamentable state of our education system in recent decades and the plain bull-headed stupidity of so many.

But he's still breaking the law by doing that, and if a certain type of copper would have seen him, he could have been fined.
Since I got fined in Manchester, because I gave space to an ambulance what required me to move my car past the red light, but it was still safe as I didn't entered crossing nor oncoming traffic, I changed my mind about 'giving/making' space.
I won't speed, curb, stop on double lines or anything for an ambulance, fire nor police. You could sit behind me with sirens and lights on, if I can't give space within the confined of the law, I won't, because the law punishes the people who do.

Todays modern standards of clean burning motors are very good. There really was a smog problem in cities like Los Angeles years ago, but that brown cloud is cleared up now. I noticed the improvement as I used to walk, run, and bicycle along a path that was right next to a well traveled highway. The time came when it was no longer noticeable that you were right next to a highway. The air quality greatly improved over time. It's not a problem anymore.
However, what we have now isn't a smog problem. Now it's a government power hunger problem. Now we have oppressive governmental power problems.

A motorcycle should never have a cat tucked up right against the motor. Motors need to cool. That is ridiculous. Motorcycles are not cars. What works for a car doesn't always work for a motorcycle. Has the government no sense? I don't want engine or transmission failure due to a catalytic converter. Then they run them too lean and the motor runs too hot anyway. It's crazy. We can't enjoy anything anymore with over regulation like that. It's evil.

Ok there are 2 reasons for the cat to be so close to the engine..
      1/ is packaging requirements.
A bike is more compact than a car so the cats have to be placed in as safe a position as possible whilst not affecting aerodynamics..
2/ a cat requires heat to work efficiently.
By placing the cat closer to the engine the cat heats up quicker and thus does its job of cleaning up the exhaust.. immediately.
      .
In the past there were roadside emissions checks, these were promptly stopped due to people being fined for emissions as soon as they pulled out of their drive with a cold engine & catalytic converter not doing its converting due to its temperature being out of scope...

As a life long motorcyclist with metal trade skills I have always modified my machines to suit my purpose.
In the 70s /80s we could just pull off a few hoses and blank things off to restore proper performance.
We often fitted 4 into 1 exhausts to our four cylinder machines which again restored normal performance and sounded so much better than the generic sewing machines of the time.
One of my machines is a 2008 Ural with sidecar. I was surprised to find that it had cats in each header pipe. Soon fixed that by removing the restriction, result improved performance.
I now have a 650 interceptor fitted with powerage mufflers and DNA filter. Sadly the cats are trapped in an all welded section of the header but I shall either cut the pipes to remove the cats and reweld or replace headers with free flowing non cat types.
To me it's a philosophical point.
I have always been prepared to flout the law and do what I want with my machines.
Here in Australia we have a relatively small population, few cops especially in the countryside where I live, so we just do what we want and don't get caught.think mad max
I'm ex military and quite comfortable with defying bad laws/rules are you as an ex copper able to go your own way, in what appears from the outside to be a timid, compliant society.

Well Stu; it doesn’t bode well for 2 litre, diesel engined, non-cat fitted, faster than the speed of sound motorcycles! I can’t unsee the bear on your Shotgun now, it appeared again under the lighting conditions as you were riding down off the bridge! By the way, you were absolutely correct to stop on the roundabout, to give priority to the ambulance. We’ve barely had a day without rain in Suffolk for five months, I don’t know how Stuart is always riding in dry sunny conditions in Yorkshire 😂
My KTM 1290 SDR is Euro 5, and I believe it’s grown to 1390 to meet new emission standards. It seems hard to imagine there aren’t solutions for stronger emission regulations and unfair if they only apply to motorcycles. Japanese manufacturers have invested a lot in emission controls considering the return of the Kawasaki ZX400RR and Honda CB600R, and it would be terrible if they become a lost cause only a year after being reintroduced to the market. I saw a video recently that suggested having less cylinders helped meet emissions, which is why singles, twins and triples have grown in popularity. Hopefully the KTM V-twin line up will be safe for the future 🤞. We need a little madness in this increasingly dystopian world 🤔😉

Anyway, as for Euro 5B, there dies seem to be a very anti motorcycle element who make these policies, I think one day in the not too distant future a large capacity motorcycle will be a thing we used to be able to buy, my only worry is how long before the powers that be try to mess around with current bikes.

My guests is either: 1/introduce an emissions check or eventually increase "green taxes" on E5 fuel to the point of it being financially difficult to maintain an older bike or even car..
      .
2/the mandatory introduction of insurance black boxes /telematics.
      Drive outside of "economical parameters"
      pay increased insurance or

It was the original one and itself had not failed but the part of the exhaust it was attached to was leaking so it had to be replaced. The whole part cost £116.00 so not outrageous by any means. My previous Passat (Same Model) had done 200,000 when I sold it with its original Catalytic Converter still in tact!! In fact the entre exhaust system was still all original!! I liked your smooth ride. I don't know much about the present situation in the UK, but in some other countries sales of high performance motorcycles has declined sharply. Insane insurance costs, especially for younger riders in big cities. With diminishing market, manufacturers are less likely to invest heavily in upgrading their top end bikes to meet emission regulations. On track days you can have equal fun on a decent handling lesser powered bike. To use the full power of a premium sports bike on road only benefits those in need of a organ donor.

Hi Stuart, with regards to the so called Trolls. Having watched your channel for some years now and the way you ride. I'd trust you with my life to ride as a pillion passenger, (something I do very very infrequently by the way due to the rider and past experiences, only a couple of my old friends are included in this trust when needs be) and feel quite safe, which I most certainly wouldn't with what I presume to be the detractor (Troll) rider, having observed how some of them perform and no doubt drive. I'm now into my 51st year as a motorcyclist and having witnessed how some people ride it's a wonder the ruling masters (who ever they are) haven't banned us all from the roads as yet. Please don't think for one moment that I'm some sort of kill joy as I firmly believe in our freedom to enjoy our riding and passion.
    Anyway moving on... 😀
My current ride is the Royal Enfield Interceptor which I purchased in 2019 having watched your reviews of the bike. I've uprated many parts YSS fork springs with the emulators, YSS rear shocks the same as yours, touring seat etc. These modifications really do improve what is already a great bike if any owners are interested. As for the other subjects you cover I find them most enthralling and enlightening (that Rolex especially) thank you. Keep up the good work and I'm sorry if I may have gone on a bit.

Both bikes are old enough that the converter wouldn't be working properly anyway.

When the water cooled T120 came out I took one out for a test ride, having ridden to the dealers on a 900 Thunderbird. It was the first time I'd experienced the insane mapping needed to meet the emission laws and I was horrified. Unlike my many other Hinkley Triumphs, including a 955i, it had awful throttle characteristics. Rolling off the throttle into a roundabout was frightening, as the engine seemed to brake, rather than coast. I didn't buy it. Since then, I've had a new Thruxton R, Tiger 900 and Tiger Sport. In all cases I rode them in Sports mode as default, simply to gain smoother control.
When I asked about the snappy throttle, my dealer smiled and gave me a free ( illegal?) remap, saying that the standard map was necessary for type approval and they regularly remapped the bikes, with a wink from Triumphs.
I still ride a Thunderbird, fitted with triple Mikunis. I get 50 plus mpg and it goes like a scalded cat. Personally, I can't see the progress in 25 years, from a riders perspective.
