Apologies for the sometimes wobbly VHS conversion!
After hearing this I determined to learn All Thumbs. When I'm 11 in my next life, I'll show ya.
Richard Smith's playing is instantly recognisable.
OMG this brings back memories. I was there in 1983 and saw all 5 hours of it. Amazing
Too bad the director missed over half of Bireli’s solos... it’s like he did not understand where they were coming from (not the kid, for sure...)
Richard - Un-real!!!!
wobbly shmobbly, what celestial artistry! And to hear R. Smith at age 11, and young Bireli and Martin Taylor! Thanks!
Incredible, I've been waiting 25 years to see footage of Bireli around this time. Tjanks.
Be sure to check out episodes 2/6 and 3/6
Thank you so much for posting this treasure.
Richard. Unbelievable.
I was lucky enough to see Diz play with Grappelli at Coventry theatre.
Not only does Martin Taylor play great polyphonic solo jazz but had a mustache at 11 years old.
1982. bireli 16 ans! ca joue déjà terrible
I remember playing just one gig with Johnny Van Derrick around this time and he damn near wore me out-and I was only in my mid 20s ! The man was a machine and wonderful to listen to as I chugged away in the background. Seriously overlooked and underrated as a result.
17 year old Bireli - Wow! And Martin, Bireli and Richard remain guitar monsters today. Amazing sharing the stage together 35 years ago. Maybe explains why Richard sometimes sidelines in Nashville Gyspy Jazz.
Excellent and only 11 years old. Well done Richard Smith
What a treat!!👍 Thank you for the upload.
Well done great future kid
Great to see dear old Denny Wright again too.
priceless !
Biréli Lagrène, a classe of his own!
Marvelous show!
WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!! These guys are tight and awesome!
❤❤🎉

i cannot express how much the first guy bored me to tears.
richard smith otoh is certifiable even then :)
Absolutely fantastic
Wow, Martin Taylor and Richard Smith in the same show. Awesome.
I can't get any sound on it!!!
It starts 15 seconds in... after the clock
@@robsmith8052 Nope; no sound anywhere along the time line. And no, it's NOT muted!! I've just checked three other videos, and they're all O.K. Bummer.
@@Zacharia503 oh weird! I watched it on my phone and sound was fine. I'll look into it.
@@robsmith8052 Works fine on my 'phone...
Trouble is, I don't have any earphones for my 'phone...
This is all frilly knickers it is technically clever but means nothing artistically. Listen to Django he is the only artist who can perform gipsy jazz. Why do these people bother they are so out of his league.
Listen to Joscho Stephan!- Django would have played like this had he a fully functional left hand! Django was the gypsy jazz Godfather. But current players really are something else in all genres here on YT.
Again an old frustrated who live in a Time he was not even born.
What about Angelo Debarre, Tchavolo Schmitt, Dorado Schmidt, Rosenberg family, Sébastien Giniaux and many others ?
They play the style with their touch, and the music belong to nobody.
Well frilly knickers aren't so bad. If Django had lived a full life his playing would have evolved. He was already toying with bebop, electric guitar and teaming up with other instrumentation. Who knows where his playing would have lead him? These modern players (mentioned by other respondents) have "stood on the shoulders of the giant" and while all can play the older Gypsy jazz standards most bring that sensibility to more modern tunes as well. They can all do a dead on version of Django's "I'll See You In My Dreams" but Django only played it that way once and then he moved on. That's what makes it exciting. That is what jazz is all about.
You are right, exept for Biréli Lagrène. If you know just a little bit of music, you hear it.
@@MattAlexan Joscho Stephan was Django Reinhardt's guitar teacher. ;-)
