Love seeing Wizard & Glass get the love it deserves. It’s in my top three fav King books and agree it is the best of the 90’s.
I'm on my second trip through the series, and I'm really looking forward to reading it again.
Love these rankings man! Can't wait for the 00s one :)
Thanks! It's coming!
Also I love Needful Things. It was sitting on my King back burner for so long. Was pleasantly surprised at how funny and dark it was. And I also think Insomnia is really overwritten as well, helps so much to read Dark Tower first. I also don’t like any of the covers for Insomnia besides the UK edition.
Thanks for the comment! I got a kick out of Needful Things. Had some really sick content, but taken as a "social comedy" it was surprisingly amusing. And regarding Insomnia - I was just thinking yesterday about that 50 page "explanation" scene that happens with Ralph and Lois and the two bald doctors floating above the hospital. Not a very artful strategy on SK's part, but I did appreciate getting a sense of what the hell was happening, and why lol. Insomnia has major issues, but it's inescapably a major part of the Dark Tower saga.
The Regulators is campy as hell. Stephen King said he was in talks with Sam Peckinpah before he died to adapt it into a movie. An adaptation of a book into a movie by a lunatic written by a lunatic (and I mean that in best way possible) would’ve been awesome.
If only...maybe on some level of the Tower that movie exists!
Cool! One thing: Can you read Desperation as a stand-alone book or do you have to read The Regulators too?
Oh absolutely they can be enjoyed individually. Pairing them up brings all the cool parallels, but it is not necessary to enjoy either book. They are fully standalone works!
It's too bad that Dairy Queen didn't do a Blizzard and Glass promotion.
OMG comment of the day! That really made me laugh.
Tell Noah that Brian said he is wrong. The Drawing of the three is what hooked me into reading everything King has ever written. I'm sure Noah is nice but horrible taste.
I have already told him that myself lol! Dot3 was my major launching point into the series. I just reread it for the first time in about 20 years and it still holds up. It's exciting, but most of all, and most surprisingly, it's hilarious! I've never laughed out loud so often at an SK novel. That's my big memory from the first read, too.
I really liked Rose Madder.
NOOOOOOO Wastelands at 13 !!!!!?????
Upon my reread, I actually liked it quite a lot! More than I remembered liking the first time, for sure. I'd love a standalone novel set in Lud. That just had my mind blown the entire time I was reading that portion of the book.
The Needful things audiobook... Ugh. It nearly ruined me on reading King for a while. I had a long commute and would listen to audiobooks along the way. King should never do his own audiobooks. I don't know-- maybe it is the accent but I found it grating. I look forward to just reading the book without the grating voice-- maybe at that point I will rate it higher on my list.
An SK-narrated audiobook was one of my first-ever experiences with audiobooks, and put me off them for many years lol! I have gotten used to his voice, and nobody knows the characters better than him, but narrators like Frank Muller or George Guidall make his words sing! I just finished William Hurt reading "Low Men in Yellow Coats" - another powerful audio performance! I'd call what SK does more "reading" than performance, although he does try from time to time to breathe some extra life into it. My wife absolutely can't stand his speaking voice lol - I have to listen to him reading when I'm alone in my car.
Thanks for the comments!
