    Miyabiyama Tetsushi (born July 28, 1977 as Masato Takeuchi) is a former sumo wrestler from Mito, Ibaraki, Japan. A former amateur champion, he turned professional in 1998. With the exception of two tournaments, he was ranked in the top division of professional sumo from 1999 until the end of his career in 2013, holding the second highest rank of ōzeki from 2000 to 2001. He won eight special prizes and was runner-up in four top division tournaments. He wrestled for Fujishima stable (formerly Musashigawa stable), where he worked as a coach until opening his own Futagoyama stable.

    How lucky was that audience to watch this sumo! What beautiful sumo Oyakata had in his active days, his desciples are so lucky to learn from him. Nabatame comes to mind when watching this, his sumo is high energy also.
    Oyakata is such a legend!

    Win or lose Miyabiyama Tetsushi was definitely a fearsome opponent. Such power in his sumo! He is perfect as Oyakata for Futagoyama.

      He was known as the Heisei Monster when he debuted at Ms15 and took only 2 tournaments to get into Juryo divison. Another 8 tournaments to be promoted to Ozeki. Basically he was an Ozeki 2 years after his debut.
      To put it into perspective, Hakuho take almost 6 year to reach Ozeki. Asashoryu took 4 years. Chiyonofuji took 11 years, Akebono and Takanohana each took more than 5 years and even the great Taiho took 4 years.
      Yes - He is a real beast in his prime.

    Wooooow incredible to see Oyakata in action! What a FIERCE, explosive and powerful athlete he is…I’m speechless because he is so gentle and humble outside of the dohyō. Who knew that lion spirit was within 🤩 What an honor for The Futagoyama boys to have him!

    雅山関が現役のとき、東京場所にしばしば茨城からお母さんが観戦に来られた。
    その度にNHKのアナウンサーが「今日は雅山関のお母さんが茨城から観戦に来られています」
    といじっていた。なぜかよく覚えているエピソード。

    Just a reminder how powerful his former heya Musashigawa (now Fujishima) was, the heya produced 4 Ozeki in the 90's and early 2000's one of them becoming yokozuna Musashimaru (now the new Musashigawa oyakata, but he opened a different heya under the same name), his fellow Ozeki Musoyama (now Fujishima oyakata) and Dejima (now Onaruto oyakata) have an emperor's cup. He's the only one who did not win the cup in his stay in makuuchi.

    • @TechJapanology
      @TechJapanology  9 місяців тому +2

      In the past, there are a larger proportion of wrestlers that uses Yotsu Sumo or fighting from the belt, rather than Oshi Sumo, which is pushing and thrusting attacks. As the wrestlers gets bigger and heavier, most of them relies on the former to take full advantage of their bulk.

    Miyabiyama was really good with his hands and was quite agile as well. I think his only problem was that he was a bit too heavy for his height which affected his balance..

    • @TechJapanology
      @TechJapanology  9 місяців тому +7

      Miyabiyama Tetsushi is his Shikona. That's his ring name, sort of like Stone Cold Steve Austin instead of calling him just Steve Williams.
      When he retired and took over the running of a stable (Heya), he inherited the name of the stable. So essentially, he is now referred to as Futagoyama Oyakata.
      He never actually changed his legal name. In legal context, his name is Takeuchi Masato
