Is there a way to determine the height of the mast with precision for calculating the dimensions of a given facet? How do you change the angle without cutting to far on a stone that is not round, say oval, or tear shaped? Wouldn't that require changing the height, especially for cutting a girdel?
The fine adjustment at the top of the mast has graduations on it and for each revolution of the fine adjustment dial is equal to a certain fraction of an inch. Im not sure what that is as i dont try to use it that way. For cutting ovals or a stone thats pear or heart shaped, i have to keep changing the index setting and the angle to create the stones shape. That also requires changing the mast height too. You can cut rounds without changing the height or angle and work your way all around the stone but you have to be very careful not ot overcut. The oval, pear and heart, marquise, all have to be cut by diagrams because as you cut the shape is forming unlike the squares and rounds which i shape first. Most girdles facets are cut at the same mast height. I hope this is helpful.
I understand cutting table, setting angles, and rotation. But what I don't understand is how to cut facet to specific depth. I understand depth is controlled by position of head on mast but how do you set so there is no overcut or undercut? Ex: when you made your first facts, they all had depth that came to a point. If you cut too deep there wouldn't be a point and it wouldn't be centered. If you cut too shallow, there would be a flat point, instead of sharp point. And I know it's just geometry. When you set an angle, the dop is at the angle and the facet is parallel to the lap. And you cut only as deep enough for facet to reach centerline of stone. But how is that done? Is it done by eyeball? Some setup on machine? Such that you set machine and cutting stops (at a stop) when facet is right depth?
Hi and thanks for watching. It is done by eyeball. The dial gauges help get you close and i now use a digital angle gauge to help and an electronic depth of cut meter that helps but you will still always need the eye to determine when to stop cutting.
When you set the index wheel, I noticed you tested the quill for rotation. Was there ANY slop in the rotation? OR is is rock solid tight? Any rotation at all, even if small, will lead to inaccurate facets.
The compnay that makes them is very busy trying to keep up with demand for the machines and is running behind with orders and at times they arent answering phones or emails i understand.

This helps alot. Was just confused how I attach the stone to the end of the metal thingy or if there is a certain way to orient it before starting.

Hi, there was no slop at all in that machines index gear engagement.
I was probably just making sure it was seated in the teeth completely.
very very thanks
How do you not over cut everything I'm trying to understand
