Doing 200mph in a 30-year old Jaguar XJ220 | Top Gear: Series 29
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 лют 2021
- The Jaguar XJ220 - so named for its target top speed of 220mph - was capable of reaching 217mph* in period. But after nearly 30 years since the first model rolled off that factory floor, has it still got it? Well Freddie Flintoff's hell-bent on finding out as he takes the XJ220 to over 200mph (indicated) on a runway.
*Nearly, Jag. Nearly.

The XJ220 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.
When Jaguar did Jaguars and not Lexus...
Pity this host crashed this one
nah its one of the ugliest

I personally think that today, the Ferrari's design looks like vintage sport and the Jag's still look futuristic.
I agree, but I do think the jag looks a little “blubby” from certain angles. But from others it looks supreme.
Ferrari's car design are the super trash.
They didn't justify there price most overated car brands ever
@@nikhilPUD01 oh go hop in your Ssangyong
@@nikhilPUD01 i dont like many ferraris myself but calling the design of an f40 trash, ye u got bad taste lol
The Ferraris especially the F-40 always looked to me like an RC car with a flat bottom plastic shell. They always seemed the biggest at the bottom with not much low down aero work. I'm still looking for the pins and studs to remove the body.
Watching him turning off this vintage turbocharged car without letting it cool down is pretty brutal.
It's a car show, they wouldn't have the camera set up where it was right after the run, so it was probably a considerable amount of time after the run that he drove it up to the other presenters.
Lucky there are modern synthetic oils eh
Also, the guy driving wrote this car off into a tree on the same day. one of only 280 ever made.
Was just about to say the same thing haha
My thoughts exactly. Have to let that oil circulate.
Jeremy Richard and James really changed over the years
Somehow they’ve become young
it will never be the same, whatever the bbc do
@Michael Smith seems everything the BBC does is soulless. They managed to take Matt LeBlanc, who is quite enjoyable to watch and make the show around him boring.
@Michael Smith i think it has alot to do with nostalgia but i do agree
Yeh he got sacked mate, and his two toady chums foxtrot oscarred too.
But it's ok cause he's got a jaaaaaaag
BBC- Bring back Clarkson!!
I've heard he stole an expensive Painting, when the police catched up with him they realized he drives a Jaaaaaaag, so it was alright
Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag
@@vedantagrawal3341 Well they are now working with Amazon Prime and a new show called The Grand Tour is the new version of Top Gear.
So we don't really need BBC to bring back Clarkson, Richard and James.
@@tushargupta1764 it's never the same, the tent is gone it's never coming back. 2 specials done only one left. End of an era😭😭
The timeless design of this car just sitting still looks like its doing 200mph.
30-yo Jag XJ220, but still sexy and magnificent as hell!
And still fast, even by today's standards: 0-60 in 3,8s and 217mph.
He: Im not even looking.
Also him: 👁️⬇️👁️
Yeah I also love the lightning sound effect going on when they change cameras
Also him: I'm trying to keep my hands loose!
his hands: white knuckles
When i saw that i was watching his eyes too and that moment he said that then glances down i had that feeling like he probably did of looking over some insane cliff lmao
lol, caught that too ;^)
expert C. l. a. r. a has been managing my trades now for months and am making profits every week. He made 1047USSD last week
Imagine what this car could do if it was made during the right time, and had all the money and time it needed.
You don't have to imagine, the Bugatti Veyron exists and was made for the same purpose.
it would do about 230. jaguar's le mans car of the period has about 800 hp and 900 kg and it could do about 230, so this thing would only be slower.
@@paveantelic7876 This is a GT car, built for doing the Grand Tour in luxury and style with fun on an Autobahn, Autostrada and Alpine roads.
What about the brilliant McLaren P1
Or if they went with the V12 AWD concept... goodnight.
**Hits 200mph then quickly kills the engine**
Me: _Slow Clapping_
Yep.. say goodbye to those turbos
Anybody got the VIN of this particular car so on the off chance I can afford one some day, I know which one NOT to buy?
@@improcrastinating8063 sadly it crashed shortly after filming :(
@@improcrastinating8063 i think this one is one of Don Law Racing cars.
@UC1isMyl317e-YmPb6fygJ_g actually, you got a point, but weird that someone don't simply put a Turbo timer on such a old iconic car.
The Jaguar XJ220 is am AMAZING machine and still looks good 30 years later. Well done!
One of the most dramatic and beautiful cars in history. On the road, it makes a Ferrari look ordinary.
Its very gorgeous car dont get me wrong but its not comparable with the beauty from an f40
@@thatniceroccor7558 true
F40 far better looking and doesn't fall apart like the cheaply put together Jag.
@@thatniceroccor7558 f40 looks ugliest as hell.
All Ferrari cars looks super borring.
I prefer Lambo there design are more modern
@@nikhilPUD01 yes do you have any cliff near your house?
Saw that car at its launch at the Birmingham NEC as a kid, dream car ever since.
I was there as well
That Jag looks phenomenal at speed
Back in the day unlocking this car in NFS 3 was an achievement . . . Man !
That was xjr-15 tho
@@knucklesfan463 damn. . It was NFS 2 then I guess
@@abhigyantalukdar8539 it was already unlocked there. Still a stunning car. Speaking of NFS2, all of them were amazing. :^)
Red one in nfs2
I didn't like how the jag looked but now that i saw this now i like it..
I've always liked it for some reason. I had models of it and the F40 when I was a kid and always thought the Jag looked smooth and sleek. To me, it doesn't look like an ancient car even now.
This must have been before it was crashed. The XJ220 is very underrated. It's still one of the most beautiful supercars ever made. I perfer the original XJ220 wheels to the black ones that someone decided to install. Top Gear just isn't the same without Clarkson, Hammond, and May. Thank you.
Hopefully they've kept the original wheels in storage.
those are the optional BBS wheels you could get for the xj220 those are probably the original ones that came with it
This car is now back on the road.
Loved this car as a kid. Now in my 30's I love it even more. Amazing to see videos like this.
Agreed!
Turns the car off immediately after doing a 200mph run, well done lad👍
Especially smart since it is a highly turbocharged engine from the '90s.
What's better than the smell of red hot glowing turbos cooking ? ;)
To be fair, modern lubricants rendered most of the issues null and void. And this guy also crashed this car into a tree at high speed later in the day
@@riskybisness I would still say it shows his lack of knowledge and care.
In all likelihood that happened a while after while the crew set up a new shot etc.
Bro it’s fine
It’s not a damn rotary engine lmao
The Jaguar looks so sleek and streamlined - a classic design !
Underrated trivia: The XJ220 plausibly could have held the production car record around the Nordschliefe from 1991 to 2002 with a 7:46. The Caveats there being that the lap in question was done by a prototype, and it wasn't independently verified so wasn't listed as an official "production car" record. These cars were big and fast, but they also handled it would seem.
sweet
I love it how 3:55 you can see the back of the car squat down as he gives it the beans. Such a beautiful car.
The single greatest car of the 90s.
Jaguar will never make a car like this ever again.
Xj220 metro 6R4 engine with a couple of turbo's slapped on it amazing
4:33 love this shot. The way the car is shining 😍
A 30 year old Jaguar🐆 with a V6. Impressive👍
why they never make a V8 or a V12 version?
@@renatoigmed Back in the 90s, Jaguar was broke and was own by Ford along with Range Rover, aston Martin and more. And ford had no idea what to do with any of their company. They even had to shut Mercury for the same reason
@@TheAshPriyam and Ford didn't have V8 engines? I still did not get it;
@@renatoigmed Wait for the Raptor R. However the hybrids ate coming and the electric🔌⚡ cars are getting popular.
@@TheAshPriyam I don't care. I hate eletric cars.
Anybody remember NFS 2 ? What a legendary car.
And Toca 2!!!
This design was ahead of its time
Would've been an awesome HyperCar nowadays
As a child I had a model of the xj220 in burgundy to this day its still my most favourite car.
people bash the xj220 for ditching the v12 and vertical doors and the AWD system from the concept but I think that they did a much better job by using the lighter v6 and as it was focused more on top speed and not on acceleration, the RWD system was enough for this. Not to forget its timeless design
truth. It ended up being faster the way it is
Looks as special as it did in my childhood and performs like a beast to this day, what one of a kind vehicle.
Still my childhood dream car, and will likely always be.
The sound of the turbo is game changer damn 340kms jeez. Respect this old beast.
That design is so beautiful
This is actually my favourite car of all time. And I like the number plate reference to the van with xj220 engine they used against the ozzies
This will always be one of my favorite dream cars, I've loved it since the first time I saw it.
An insane car! one of my fav classics!
I’ll give them credit. They still film TopGear in a way that genuinely gets you excited
But its just cringe, Chris is the only one whos interesting and is the saving Grace, I wish it was him and Rory still.
Yeah but Its kinda cringe sometimes cus they prolly show shopping cart go 6mph like it goes at 200+
Never stopped loving its shape. And sound😈
A design masterpiece, cant believe the XJ220 is that old, still looks supreme.
can we have the actual speed he recorded? or are we gonna trust a 30 year old speedometer?
30yr car, 30yr speedometer.
Yes ngl
Yes, the speedo is accurate.
I'd say the true speed was around 185 give or take. depending on the inaccuracies of the speedo
it's just a show
thx for my smiling today but please dont stop the engine immediately after the race
I got the chills just watching him trying to hit 200.
Still 20 short for the XJ220
17mph to be fair ;)

@@GeldardsHistory That Jag Freddie drove? Oh dear, that's not nice.
I love the wastegate noise off of the turbochargers
Never seen it before and I fall in love instantly
What a car. So impressive even today and looks better than ever. Plus Jag clearly knew V6 was the way things were headed 😅
Seen one in real life. How can you not love the shape. Manual as well. Phwoar!!!
This is the most random thing ever but I saw (heard first!) a yellow TWR XJ220 with the fixed lights and clear covers pull into the old Blurton Mobil Service station in Stoke-on-Trent about 24 years ago... I'll never forget being absolutely in the right place at the right time!
I may have also tried to imagine my engine swapped '89 Maestro might have kept up for a bend or two... doubtful 😂
Mind you, with a lightly tuned M16 and a close ratio PG1 gearbox from an early MG Montego it was pretty handy!
How beautiful is that Jagg.
"I'm not even looking!" **looks**
Lov that car behind plus that turbo music playing 👏👏👏 British finest beast
Love this damn car so much.
5:31 What a day, then he nails the air high-fives perfectly! 😂
Might not be the best car but I would def still love one. Beautiful.
XJ220 is one of the few old cars that I like. Interesting design
That slingshot move was a good call. Awesome.
That Jaguar has and always will be beautiful.
This is such a beautiful car!
Always good to see someone cool the brakes and the turbos after such a run........oh wait why dont we just stop the car and turn off the engine seconds after...
It’s called editing
This is most beautiful and most underrated supercar ever made
God no. It's as ugly as the devil. I'll take a 959 thanks.
That was my poster car as a kid. Love that car.
Chris Harris is the only reason that TG is alive, thank u Chris
I bet with a longer runway and modern tires. The Jaag would do 210+ without any problems.
Beautiful Jaguar
love design of this car, there was a Amiga Game for this car from 1992.
But not the same without James, Richard, Jeremy ...
THE MOST ICONIC DESIGN OF ITS ERA.

Beautiful beast of engineering.
I think the xj is such a beautiful car and clearly if cared for still very capable
November last year I remember reading this beautiful car was written off, what a beautiful car it was.
I saw one of these in person for the first time a month ago at Daytona international speedway during the Rolex 24 race. They had a car show going on that night outside the speedway. Amazing car!!!!
God, the sound of the turbo on that thing...
One of the best car ever made!
Did the confirm it just by the car's speedometer or an a proper timer? The speedometer is not always accurate with older cars especially. Sometimes they can be off by as much as 10mph.
I was anxiously waiting for the frunk lid to fly open...that thing was lifting a lot!
This is such a great car
Sounds 🔥
