I have 2 580M and used to also have a 580L, never had this happen to my 580L but both of my 580M’s have had this issue happen and it was a yellow wire down below the fuel pump that plugs into the block that had either lost contact or was completely unplugged, and you could not crank that machine don’t care what you tried until that wire was making that connection. Hope this helps, it took me awhile to figure it out, nobody could figure out why it wouldn’t start , mine sounded just like yours almost would crank, but no, reattached the wire and motor turned a half turn and fired up.
I’ve had several of those same machines never had the first minutes problem with them ! Some with 6000 to 7000 hours on them and have never touched the engine it was bulletproof ! It really baffles me as well the only issue I had one time that it would not start was the fuel pump solenoid and it had a rock stuck down in it ! Great machines ! I have newer machines now but I still have one just like that one!
It turns over awful fast, might check compression and visually inspect the rockers and pushrods to make sure everything is doing what it’s supposed to. Customers often omit details, like if they lost the fuel pump and tried to start it with ether before you got there. Takes just a tickle to crack old pistons or break rings. Could check your blow by while they crank it
My 580SM II did the same thing , I found a pinhole in one of the hoses going into the fuel float on top of the tank, it was close to the end so i cut it off and reconnected and it started right up ran for 3 years until last week when it died warming up , it has 4,000 hours, changed both filters and can't get any fuel to come up. I'll try something new tomorrow.
We had a no start issue with our case skip loader. The problem ended up being a corroded wires in the fuss box that kept turning off the fuel solenoid off and would kill the machine.
May check and make sure the pump hasn’t rotated, it could still show in time even if the pump it self has moved. That’s an A pump not a P pump and they can be adjusted by rotating like the VE pumps
Make shure everything on the air side is good. It could be some wierd stuff there, collapsed filter, broker turbo, neighbours cat in the intake etc. Does it run on starting fluid? Fuel stop solenoid as more people are saying down below. Maybe clogged exhaust ? Just make shure all the obvius stuff is checked out before going in too deep :)
The injection pump has a fuel shutoff switch. If it is closed it won't start. Check the fuse for fuel shutoff switch. Or take the switch out of the pump and see if the plunger opens and closes
Had the same problem on a gas engine. Problem ended up being an electrical problem. Lead to bad coil , alternator, battery, dunno nothing bout diesel 👍
I’ve got the same machine. Doubt this is the problem due to the fact that your out of ca, but when it gets cold the fuel will gel the lines from the tank to the pump. All I do is take the line off from the pump and pressurize the tank to blow the sludge out.
fuel shut off solenoid on the injection pump may have died. make sure you have a solid battery voltage to it when cranking. make sure the solenoid moves fully when activated.
You can take the spring out of the run on the solenoid on the pump to rule out it not working I had one fail on a first gen You said you have fuel at the injectors fuel is good but you need pressure to get the injectors to fire Did you say it won’t run on starting fluid? If so I agree timing or maybe the cam got ground flat Good luck. I love your videos
I know you said you replaced the check valve on the return line but with the parts quality today it might be worth just pinching off the return line if it's rubber to see if it will start good luck
Had a duramax a few years back that someone ran out of fuel and ethered it instead of bleeding the lines. Melted off 4 injector tips and 2 glow plugs. Came to the shop that way but didn't say anything. Blead fuel system and tried to start but sounded close to what you have. Rebled and more air every time. Compresion was coming back into the fuel system through the bad injectors and would never start. Possibly a bad injector tip? By the way the duramax had 900 miles on it and was unsavable due to a scored cylinder wall and actually warped a cylinder head from getting that hot.
Injectors is my guess but so weird. 4bts and 12v like you said run no matter what. The other comment about to pump slipping is possible but it lines up perfect in the vid.
A compression test would at least rule out a piston or top end issue?! Could it break a keyway someplace? Failing at an idle sure points to fuel something? Just thoughts... 8-| --gary
@@VBELTandSONwow, i say that becouse our 580 will only start when i actuate a hydraulic lever while turning key, i found this out by accident my thought was to use the starter to run the hydraulics to lift the bucket so i could tow the machine and when i did this the engine started running, i operated the front bucket up and down to drive to shop, but i didnt make a connection till i found this comment, now i need to find said relief valve, thank you for your persistance on this matter im a newby still!
I have that same exact 580SL. I've had to change that lift pump on mine too. I would probably pull the injection pump and take it in to be tested. Those A pumps are obviously stout, but I've had other inline pumps fail on me. Someone asked about starting fluid and you said no. Does it at least rev up on ether like normal, then die once the shot of ether is consumed?
Ok I could be a dick and say” It ain’t got No Gas in It” but I’m sure you’ve heard that a lot. (Plus it’s diesel). I’m with you I have no clue why it won’t start.

Thanks for the video Sam take care of yourself and family and be Blessed. Yes snowing here too in NW Wisconsin till Monday.

What became of this backhoe? Did you find the problem? I see no follow-up video.
Hydraulic pump relief valve was stuck
One of my favorite jobs on the farm back in the day was running around with my dad fixing tile holes with a 580 like that in a faded orange color
We had a no start issue with our case skip loader. The problem ended up being a corroded wires in the fuss box that kept turning off the fuel solenoid off and would kill the machine.

I didn’t even think to notice that. Good eye

Yup all that was checked right off the bat. This was my second time at the machine
I'd check the compression.
What a problem to have eh lol. Wish I cld offer some advice but have only had case tractors.
The injection pump has a fuel shutoff switch. If it is closed it won't start. Check the fuse for fuel shutoff switch. Or take the switch out of the pump and see if the plunger opens and closes
I manually turned the just off valve on. Wasn’t the issue. I’ll make a video some day in what the problem really was

I manually had the fuel turned on it’s getting fuel to the injectors
You can take the spring out of the run on the solenoid on the pump to rule out it not working
I had one fail on a first gen

Manually push the shutoff lever full forward while cranking, my 590sl did it last week and shutoff solenoid failed
Yup did that first thing.
Keep us updated man. I’m curious to know what the outcome ended up being.

Yeah I was thinking something like that also. So weird how close it is to firing but never changed
This is gonna sound dumb but check the horn fuse..
Injectors is my guess but so weird. 4bts and 12v like you said run no matter what. The other comment about to pump slipping is possible but it lines up perfect in the vid.
Either an electrical issue or internal injection governor.
Engine timing would be obvious
Hydraulic relief valve stuck closed
Check the oil pressure switch
check the power wire to the pump
Just check your air breather on your fuel tank. See if you can blow back on your hose
Was hydraulic pump issue. Wouldn’t let the engine start. New relief valve and started
A compression test would at least rule out a piston or top end issue?! Could it break a keyway someplace? Failing at an idle sure points to fuel something? Just thoughts... 8-| --gary
Nice video
god it is insane when these machines stop running, doesnt seem fair lol
Get in touch with Clinton from cc equipment on UA-cam. He deals with a lot of tractors that have those engines.
The shifter for forward and reverse goes bad. Try a new one.
Do you have a follow up video very curious on the outcome.
Pressure relief valve on front hydraulic pump was not relieving. Backed off the pressure and it started right up
@@VBELTandSONwhere it located ..

understand gear timing...no chain
DROP TEN AND PUNT!!!!!
Does it pop off and run at all off starting fuild? It would narrow down a fuel issue from something internal
No
Has starting fluid been used? My dad used starting fluid and bent some push rods.
Hmm that’s interesting 🤔

What did you find on the No start issue?
Hydraulic pressure relief valve stuck lol
@@VBELTandSONwhere is it located. can you tell me more detail .. hope you reply
Does it have a electric fuel cut off on the fuel pump? If it does. Does it have a screw on the pump that bypasses the electric switch.
Nope all mechanical. And was I
Engaged. Fuel is getting to the injectors
But your filming all engines start first try on film. Is this an early April fools joke. 😂
Break those injectors loose and get them bubbles out or she will not start.
Did that many times Ol son fuel is getting there. Still no start.
Are no longer doing second channel content?
Posted a video on the 2nd channel a few days ago.
Too simple but maybe air filter plugged?
Checked that and turbo spins nice
Are u buddies with Western truck and tractor. He probably can help u. 🤷♂️
Idk who that is
@@VBELTandSON Lol. You’re still the man bro, don’t worry. 👍🏻
Hmmm 🤔 get a big hammer and start tapping 🤷🏽♂️
You can check the timing
That’s the first thing I did in the video…
