    Some valid points from Sadguru:
    1. We cannot define the nature of reality with what we perceive through 5 senses, because sense perception is different for different beings(so how do you know reality is ACTUALLY what you are experiencing through 5 senses? meaning saying its physical, solid etc).
    2. If Brain Activity is to be taken as evidence for conscious experience, then why are there some many cases where there is minimum brain activity but people report extraordinary experiences?(the Black swan logic should be applied here meaning even if one swan is black you cannot conclude all swans are white)
    3. This is not from Sadguru but from others: Correlation does not imply causation. Just because we are able to correlate conscious experiences to brain activity that does not mean brain causes consciousness.
    4. Steven Spinker just brushes of the Hard Problem of consciousness (by saying is not that hard) as if he has an answer for that. If he really did then there would not be so much debate in scientific circles. He just says we will find it in future(very convenient)
    5. He Wongly claims and says AI was made conscious and later convenienlty says well they had a different meaning for sentience.
    6. There have been many debates on this subject and many well known scientists like donald hoffmann, bernardo kastrup and Federico fogine(inventor of microprocessor) provided great defence to the points raised by Steven Spinker. So its good to know both sides

Why do you think minimal brain activity cannot be associated with 'extraordinary' experiences ? After all, there is a gap between the neuronal processes and qualia or concisous experience and you are right in pointing out that we do not have a definitive causation model. If one doesnt know causatory mechanism but empirically if low brain activity correlates with intense/extraordinary conciousness experience, why it is problematic?

    • @mithunbalaji8199
      @mithunbalaji8199 10 місяців тому

For me, conciousness is a property that arises out of the interaction between the entities of a system, say brain. It cannot be reduced to the entities themselves.
The concept of wetness and water in cloths is a analogy. Water molecules are trapped in the fabric which gives it a overall sense of wetness.
It doesn't even make any sense to call as some sort of causation which we use in natural sciences. What do you think?

Consciousness is that which provides any experience. Experience = consciousness + object. Consciousness is the ground of all experience. So yes in this sense, consciousness is a miracle in a sense that it does not have any cause that produces it.

Miracle, magic, wondrous, awe-inspiring, are all words to describe the state, a mental space in which we get interested enough , involved enough and devoted enough to invest ourselves in a particular process. See a kindergarten kid planting a sprout seed and making a plant grow in 8 days....it feels wondrous to them, then they are willling enough to invest themselves in gardening, to learn the process of gardening. So the whole point is the willingness to create the mental space to follow the steps that lead to the experience of consciousness. Now Sadguru says yoga has the steps that lead to consciousness, many people follow it and get a taste of it, and so-called scientific people are unwilling to keep their mind aside and follow the yogic steps, but also wanting to create their own steps or replicate the yogic steps in their own way.

Sadhguru has literally said it himself that he tried his best to not be educated!! That tells us everything about how much he understands science. Schooling myself made me go through the process of rational thinking and forced a scientific perspective on me even if ignorance was easy and I'm so glad it did. Sadhguru believes he's right cause his ignorance was never refuted during childhood. Which is where all his confidence comes from. Learning science humbles a person. It shows you how insignificant you can be amidst the world and be amazed by how things came to be as we see it now. When you get this formal education, you acquire the tools to observe life as it is and not let your personal biases hinder the facts. So I'm not really surprised that Sadhguru believes in what he does. I used to be annoyed by his flawed thinking, but now I don't even consider his opinions.
I'm not saying he's stupid though. He's an extremely smart businessman and manipulator and I admire his confidence. But ultimately, he's just spreading nonsense with an appeal to ignorance.

The main thing that is being said is that consciousness, the fact that youre experiencing everything, is not from the brain. How? Because the sense of experiencing everything, the consciousness, is same in everyone, even animals, but the brains are different. For you, sight means light but for an owl, sight means darkness. So the brain and senses of an owl are completely different from those of a human being but with both of them, one thing is common and also unchanging with time, that is their sense of self, the fact of them experiencing everything, the consciousness. The system of the owl is limiting its consciousness to only that much of expression, otherwise if the same consciousness was in a human system, it would be a full-fledged human consciousness. However, one can explain such an experience without religion or mysticism. This experience stems from an openness towards the world resulting from the acknowledgement that we have a lot to acquire and learn from each experience. Richard Feynman and Albert Einstein were driven by their curiosity and passion. No need to postulate extra entities in order to talk about intimate personal experiences of gratitude.
In religion, such types of experiences have been interpreted as indicated, due to this openness towards the world, that such an opens indicates that there must exist a higher power as the source of this bigger thing than us which woes us in such experiences. What woes as in such experience is our own emotions stemming from the receptivity and awareness that indeed, the world is much more complex than us.
This explains the context, in my view, of Sadhguru's claims. Well, his claims are based on loose usage of language and have no epistemic, artistic, or philosophical value. He can make, occasionally, claim with some psychological value like 'be chill and relax' or equivalents, but this is not a valuable contribution to any debate.

There is a fundamental flaw in understanding what consciousness is. It is that which gives the first-person experience. Of course, scientists can observe and explain brain activity and neurons but not consciousness because it is that which illumines every observation and explanation. For example, I am contemplating consciousness, it is the very consciousness that knows that I am contemplating. Then, how can you contemplate that? Consciousness is that which knows that I see objects. Then how can you see consciousness? Same with taste, touch, and other forms of perception. This is exactly what the Kenopanishad says.

Just taking a small part of the whole conversation and manipulating it in your own ways for your ego satisfaction and making fun of it is not at all good and acceptable.
Actually the main thing here is that , in the original video I can show you more than 10 time where Steven is not getting the exact point about what Sadguru is addressing instead of sticking to his own perception.
It doesn’t mean that you are not biased from your own thoughts and perception just because a scientist suffix is added after your name for your research and all.

I have nothing against you, and nothing for Sadhguru. This conversation was rather confusing since both of them were not trying to understand each other, and it's okay.
Just one thing that I'd like to point out, you said "What's the proof of different states of being", well there has been plenty of proof. You should that research before saying that there's no proof.
However, even when you find the external proof, particularly in the form of explanations and second hand experience, you shouldn't believe it, because that's not the way to know about those states. You must experience it yourself through the meditation of your choice and suitability from Yoga and Vedanta.
And you can also go to those states without reading any of those books or following a method, but that's a very tricky path, you must be super alert, curious and open to it, and that's not an easy thing.
Things shouldn't be perceived with biases, or we'll always be misunderstanding it for something which it is not, which will result in losing a considerable amount of knowledge and time.
Both the modern scientists and sages throughout history have worked really hard to gather immensely useful knowledge for us, we should focus on harnessing that, rather than wrestle to prove which is superior, that's a human stupidity.

Your logic is totally flawed. You're literally saying a cryogenic engine "means nothing unless it can be verified (explained) using a diesel engine". It's just plain stupid and childish to even have a thinking pattern like this. The current scientific methods are merely on the scape of physicality and there's not scientific (as per the present definitions) way to explain things of the non-physical realm. So, it's very weak argument I would say, teacher like Vikas sir too often used to say this but he state this in philosophical context not in the realm of science.

It’s impossible for anyone to constantly be in the public domain and not draw criticism for his answers.
Also, why don’t you all criticise the mullahs and the pastors who suffer from the worst kind of hypocrisy. Oh, I forgot, they’re a hard target. Your barbs will ricochet on you.

Thanks for your efforts, Pranav! The likes of Satguru has mass following because most of what he says are from ancient texts which were the truth at that time. These hypothesis where created by the best minds of those days who didn't have the technology or prior knowledge to build on. These hypothesis were the result of questioning - which is the basis of science. Just like how scientists from hypothesis about dark energy, those days they formed hypothesis about working of the mind. It's very very hard to beat spirituality with science also because some of the 'spiritual' experience are real. For example, today, science knows what happens in the brain when we meditate. When people find benefit in it, they also believe the pseudo science that comes with it. Therefore, instead of considering them as anti-science, we must embrace them as certain stage in our knowledge path which was important at one point and educate people about how we have moved forward with modern science.

Sadhguru is a genius at what he does. How can you even begin to counter his argument if you don't even understand what he's trying to say? He purposefully uses vague language that any listener must actively try to decipher. If you are able to understand what he's saying and try to counter it, he hides behind the vagueness by making you look like a moron for misinterpreting his vague statements or makes even more vague statements that create more confusion for you. This is why I find him very annoying to listen to. His followers though, they aren't trying to actively make sense of what he's saying. Unlike us who are trying to do so because we want to analyze what he's saying critically, they simply fill in the details with their own ideas and beliefs, and end up in a constant state of confirmation bias, making them feel like what was said was profound by the end. To them everything he said made sense because they had already decided that it will, and so it didn't truly matter what he said so long as he hit the correct keywords to make them fill in the details that they believe in/want to hear/already believe. It's a nightmare to deal with this man.

You have to be honest and acknowledge that Sadhguru only said that it’s not very scientific to assume that if something cannot be currently proven within established standards and forms, then it does not exist or cannot be scientifically validated in the future. Regardless of you position, I think this holds up pretty well.
Anything else strikes me as extremely biased and medieval, after all we once thought that the Sun revolves around the earth only to be greatly humbled.

I wish we could have such rational scientist in our country, instead of having just scientists. I am never going to listen this Sadhguru's video, complete wastage of time. Perhaps only skill is his fluency during speaking in english like most of smart youtubers who promote 'sanaatan dhram'. Wondering how even he came in such position where thousands of people listen to him? Clearly, I am worried more for his followers not for him, who are those people? Magical, miracle, fantastic...what was all these? So many conflicts, contradicts- just bunch of words without meaning anything.
My father died in 1992 when I was 9 years old, if he appears in front of me today, I will call it miracle.
