  • This video lecture discusses the meaning of humanism.
    Humanism is a philosophical stance which affirms the fact that humans have dignity and worth and that they are capable of discovering truths about the world and humanity’s place within it purely by appealing to reason and scientific method. In humanism, there is also the emphasis on faith in humanity and a concern for building a more humane and just society.

    It’s helpful to distinguish humanism and secular humanism. Or Aristotelian humanism, Erasmus’s humanism, and contemporary humanism.

    Finally, something that makes sense to me. I felt guilty not feeling the same as the church, I never felt life was predetermined and felt that was an awful way to view the world. I never saw things in black and white but with a ton of gray area, to be explored and not generalized.

    I just wanna make this point that being non-religious is not synonymous with being a naturalist, because it just means that you don't belong to any particular religion. However, a non-religious person can still subscribe to new-age spirituality, and also believe in mystical things.

      @@ken4975 I’m a bit late here, but I don’t think humanism is quite like religion or a belief system, since every humanist has their own goals, own personal rules and own moral code. No humanist is quite the same, and so in my opinion, trying to label people like humanists isn’t quite right. And most humanists as far as I’m aware don’t believe in religion, but understand that it gives comfort to people to believe in something bigger than themselves, and so respect other peoples beliefs.
      If you ask me, if everyone in the world believed in humanist ideals like wanting to improve the lives of everyone around them, and living life for the sake of living, then the world would be way more peaceful.

    Denying all the aspects of human faculties and choosing only a few and calling it humanism seems a bit rich.
    Despite all the sciences, no one on earth can be certain that existence is a purposeless natural process. Go study philosophy of science. What science has found about these changes is largely speculative yet they're advertised as facts by famous, highly regarded, yet malicious people.

    I’m amazed at how people keep saying that humanism isn’t a religion. They say it’s a “philosophical” position that uplifts humans above all else.
    Not only is that the epitome of religion, it’s the epitome of self worship.
    Humanism is the religion of self worship. That is why so many people are drawn to that show The Chosen. They keep saying “Oh I love that show because it highlights Jesus’s human aspects”. What they “see” is a human who is God, not a God who was human.

    • @Nickers19
      @Nickers19 2 місяці тому

      How is its self-worship when besides the rights of individuals, it seeks to affirm our collective rights as well and is an empathetic world view, generally speaking. How isn't thinking that we are the center of the universe not being self-worhship as in Abrahamic religions though?

      So at the very end of the video, she states that in humanism "people make their own purpose in life, set their own goals, and give meaning to their own life." The video didnt do a thorough job explaining IMO. Humanists don't find meaning from an outside "divinity" such as a spirit or god figure.
