As a professional LA fashion photographer there are two options, deals with magazines for fashion which is very hard to get into, or catalogs for clothing manufacturer‘s it all depends on who you know. randomly just shooting fashion pictures doesn’t make you a fashion photographer ! Today a lot of clothing manufacturers now have in-house studios they pay an hourly rate of about $20-$25 on hour unlike freelance for a magazines shoot who have some Sort of budget, but not what you think!
And editorial doesn’t pay ! Don’t forget that one lol
@@michaelacedeno it does pay. Not a lot and not all but it does. You would never be working for Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith or any of those companies without pay
Independent magazines won’t but it comes with the more freedoms to do thjngs
@@bymatallana not true, I’ve had images published in major publications without payment lol signed a release form and what not. If they don’t commission you, you’re not getting paid. Either their lying or you’re being bullied. Most of the time, it’s both, they have a business to run and lights to keep on and generally it’s at the expense of the photographer who needs every ounce of help they can get to go a bit further.
@@michaelacedeno again not true. still is the lowest rate but thats how i make money from licensing images through Trunk Archive and Art Partner licensing. you are working with the wrong publications man. also most of the very commercial magazines like nails magazines, make up, eyewear magazines that are produce for non high fashion brands pay.
Great chat as always with you Scott! Thanks so much for having me! ☺
Any time!
Love your body of work and listening to the conversation between you both. That slow burn comment reminded be its not one thing but a series of actions, towards the same goal, over a period of time that can pay off, you never know when, but at some point maybe. Congrats on great careers for both of you.
Not sure if this would be too much overlap with this video Scott but I'd love to hear from Nadia Lee Cohen, being as she is both a fashion photographer and a model, would be interesting to hear from someone who has a dual perspective like that. Plus I absolutely adore her work and find it inspiring. Going to dive into this video now, very excited!
I have no interesting in fashion photography whatsoever, but this was still a great listen. I love learning about other people's experiences in the business and hearing how its both similar and different to what I do.
Thank you for the great talk, insight and simply sharing. Congratulations to both. Have a great week!
It would be interesting to hear you and Karl Taylor go back and forth. You seem to have different philosophies and tastes, which could either make for an interesting conversation or an epic fight- not sure which 😅😂
Yes, I think it would be an interesting chat.
I’ll ask
Scott - best dog walking coat by far - Helly Hansen Parka but take off the furry collar. Mines 2 winters in, still perfectly waterproof and very warm.
Her work is incredible! Thanks for posting this style video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
watched this 2 times over, the insight is awesome though makes me think that myself being extremely technical that perhaps I need to bring in a creative director or someone to work with as I am not that creative, mind you i absolutely love fashion and portraits, believe its time to do some shopping around for some one that I could bring into the team for a test drive
thank you man, the longer vids might not give you a decent return though the value they add to others like myself as example is HUGE as it helps shape and guide me a little into the right direction
You're a great listener, Scott. Excellent interview!
Love this! I hope you can do more like this interviewing other photographers. I will be sharing this with my photo studio partners who are into fashion.
Thanks for that, Jodie and Scott, very enjoyable. Kept me engaged all the way through. Terrific!
Wonderful surprise to see Jodie a near neighbour in a brill interview..thanks.
Absolutely loved this interview.
It doesn’t take a sugar dad to start and thrive.
Took me a few days to react cause I had to look up the name and work got sorta in the way.
Anyways. Would love to hear you talk to Peter Coulson. And the views on photography at the moment.
Great interview Scott
Creative family
Always nice to have creativity normalised from a young age
OMG Pendulum!
Legend!
Sir Don McCullin is an amazing photographer would love to see you interview him.
I don't know that it's possible, but I would really like to see you interview Betty Shin Binon. She works in Toronto, and her work is a stark contrast to yours. She has a very moody style, and I would be very interested in the discussion surrounding your combined experiences with very different voices in still life.
I would love to watch you interview Tyler Shields
Scott you should interview Steve Carty and also have Steve interview you.
No way! I worked on the W Hotel interiors!
I would love to watch an interview with you and Peter McKinnon, I would love to see what views you both share or don't :)....side note, why so much hate for Godox?!
I shoot fashion and beauty but not for that long. Curious how do you do usage and determine your day rate? Also how do you get clients to agree to stylists on set, I'm super over steaming
Peter Coulson from down under might be worth a punt for an interview. He's also has UA-cam.
You should try and get a interview with Bastiaan woudt. Fine art photographer
Norimichi Inoguchi, please.
I just ruled out fashion photography as a business possibility. If i was located in a major fashion hub that might have been different but ye not gonna happen otherwise.
Also do you continue to love doing retouching? because its like 6 hours or more for one image.
I recently learned the term spigot adapter… maybe that’s the pin thingie the lights are mounted on…?
It’s the smallest universal style mount for lighting and grip equipment, there’s some good videos here on UA-cam that explain grip equipment.
I thought they weren’t talking about the spigot, but the receiver: the bit the spigot goes into.
Their confusion is spreading!
@@benharris3949 Idk haha I will call it pin or flash mount for my whole life I guess.
@@michaelacedeno
Yeah I guess I need to watch these later. Thanks!
@@kjdh3823 if ya work on a big production with lots of experienced people they likely won’t know what ya mean by that but there’s always room for everyone to learn and adapt 🙌🏽
Pop some Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow on... sorted. Or early Madonna.
Hi What do you follow lsdigi on please? Enjoyed your chat with Jodie.

Curious if you know of any photographers that have moved country and effectively restarted their career from scratch? I’ve moved from LA where I was finally gathering a bit of momentum to London where I’m finding networking and what not pretty hard. Any tips?
Separately, I also DIT (gotta do it all these days) if ya want someone more consistently in London. I got lots of free time at the moment hah
Jodie has fabulous hair... how would she describe her style?
Wolf Cut, I believe is the name.
Why waste time with FS when there is some great new image editing software now?
Whats FS?
Nothing wrong with Godox. It gets the job done with no drama. I’ve never had a Godox light fail on me and I abuse the crap out of it.
Have they talked about A.I. yet?
Not yet
Next time invite SNHFoto he is fitness photographer also from the UK. i would love to hear how he did to become such a good photographer and how he rolled into that niche. i am also i a fitness photographer just starting
Was Jodie "creative" before photography? Painter?
think its all covered in the video
She covered that in the first 5 min
