I lived at Mahia in 1974 to 1977... I surfed this place by myself heaps of times....many big glassy days sitting out by that big rock you can see it breaking on...I worked for Ray Brand on his fishing boat..nice man...still think about him lots...how good he treated a young long haired surfie kid....living the dream...my wife and I lived in the YMCA camp when there was forest all around it, we were the caretakers there....thanks Mahia...i'll always luv ya.
My brother taught in Mahia for 11-years. I remember the first time I saw legit surf was at Rolling Stones when I was visiting - Max came down in his old Land Rover with his dunga' long board on the roof - the under-ground chargers all showed up (Git Pitt, etc.). In my time visiting I learned to surf and returned to Nova Scotia Canada in the late-90s and pioneered surfing in Cow Bay with a small local crew. Many great memories of Mahia, New Zealand, and the great people I met. My learning to surf their changed my life. Thanks for sharing this; a real trip back in time.
I had a mate who had a big blown up photo of this place from when he lived there in the 70’s - it was perfect shape, sunny day, no one out. It was mesmerising. Always wondered where it actually was.
SO F cool to see this cause the (many) times we went to mahia we never got it breaks my f heart to see it like this rolling stones was always a 'mystery' wave: at least to me we surfed blacks boat harbours and the bay itself when it got big one time getting good rights on the inside of those rocks there. fucking bullshit. Txs so much for this unbelievable view that cliff face at tolling stones i remember well and amazing to see after all this time i sat on it one time when the waves were huge (to me any way) ten twelve foot i was shitting myself. I'd gone up to eight nine ten but this was just a chunk larger man lol.
Xcellent footage well done it would’ve been nice to listen to the natural surf crashing etc or maybe a commentary by you , sorry but the music doesn’t quite cut the ham . But but otherwise an excellent footage thanks for sharing
