A chess history video I'd really like to see if you want to go back to older games again: a video on the 1924 New York chess tournament, and specifically Richard Reti's wins against Alekhine and Capablanca. It would be a good video to explain how "hypermodern" ideas (and by extension, today's chess) began, and what pre-WWII chess was usually like compared to today.
I'd also love to see you cover Tony Miles' win over Karpov with the ridiculous-looking St. George defense, which as a bonus would also make for a great thumbnail.

Great video! I read a book on a similar subject way back in the 90's about when Kasparov was facing off against Deep Blue and chess was pretty popular as a result. They talked a lot about how impossible it is to directly compare players' skill based on ratings, because of ratings creep, and changes in how ratings are calculated over the years... so they tried to compare several ways.
One was by trying to translate ratings by assuming that the top players in a given generation were all similarly skilled.
Another (and the bulk of the book) was by analyzing games and building games as if the much earlier masters and the more recent ones were actually playing each other. I don't know how much fidelity that has, but it was still an interesting read.
And another was just basically 'gut feel'.
I think, nowadays, there's little doubt. Computers have changed a _lot_ about how chess is played, how chess players are trained, and how chess players think during the game. In the 90's, it was always "Kasparov is great, no doubt, but Bobby Fischer would've wiped the floor with him," or things like that.
Now, I'm pretty sure Magnus Carlsen would legitimately overcome anybody who's ever played the game. He simply has more resources available to him.
Then there's also the idea, as in a lot of sports in which records are broken again and again through time, often to dizzying heights thought literally impossible before someone shattered them, that there are just a _lot_ more humans now. Not only that, a greater percentage of us are _able_ to pursue these kinds of passions and hobbies to our fullest, with standards of living the highest they've ever been. The best in the world a hundred years ago might have been the best out of a couple hundred grandmasters. Now, that's just the best in a small nation or a large province or state, and the best in the world are the best out of a couple _thousand_ grandmasters. Of course they're better, on average.
Yes, I think about this kind of thing a lot.

The Anand-Kasparov game was the game that led to me making a bold prediction to my chess playing friends in my local pub. I said that Anand would be world champion but he couldn't take the title from Kasparov. I claimed Anand was better than Kramnik but Kramnik could beat Kasparov and become world champion and then Anand would be able to beat Kramnik. I described it as being a rock-paper-scissors type of situation. Fast forward eight years and I was very worried about looking silly because I had now been banging on about this for a long time and the same group of friends were more than ready to rip the P!55 if I got it wrong. Thankfully for me Anand did the job. But because this is Scotland, my friends took the P!55 anyway and started asking me to predict the weather and the football results when they weren't laughing at my 1015 (ChessScotland) classical elo rating.

Fun fact: contrary to popular belief, while Magnus holds historically the highest blitz rating at 2986, Hikaru does NOT hold the second highest. In fact, that title belongs to MVL, who hit 2948.
ALSO, and I didn't believe it when I first saw it because I've never considered him a great speed player, but Sergey Karjakin, i.e. He Who Shall Not Be Named, peaked at 2906 Blitz, making him the 5th highest rated Blitz player in history. Grischuk's was 2923, making him 4th all time, but considering he basically always plays Blitz, even in classical games, I sort of expected that from him.

I know it would take a lot of time, and that you claim to have stopped coaching. But I think it could be cool if you could do a rating climb series with a subscriber: You record some coaching sessions with some subscribers and follow their progress in ratings. I suggest this, because my favorite chess videos across multiple channels are the ones, where streamers are being coached while practicing for PogChamps.
Im am not a subscriber myself (shame on me, I know), so I don't say it because I want to get coaching. I genuinely think, it would be an awesome series

Are we ever gonna have a “the greatest (piece) of all time” series were you demonstrate a match or two matches were a knight, bishop .. etc has been imperative for the win or something.
like that octopus Knight Caruana Loves so much.

    • @bobing1752
      @bobing1752 2 роки тому

I think he made a video called something like "5 chess games you must know" where he talked about this knight. And "the greatest bishop/rook/queen" of all times wouldn't be very interesting in my opinion because they are long range pieces and you often need 1 move to make them as good as they can be. I can imagine a very annoying bishop, but the best rook is just on the 7th, and the best queen is just hitting a lot of stuff which probably means the game already went very wrong.

Do you think we will ever see 3000 in our lifetime with the implementation of engines and online chess for more practice? Or will this make it harder to win because more games will be too close because we will know too much about chess that there won’t be enough rating to pass around?
