Argh, but why??? Like I have studied this position for so long and I can't figure out what makes it a bad move. I must be missing something completely obvious.
Judging from Magnus' manner of play he really seems to enjoy just playing chess. For the fun of it. Many of his moves look so amateurish if looked at separately. But, brought together, they form something magical. Real beauty. Elegant blend of simplicity and power.
I'm not sure if that's something he said himself, or if it's something another strong player said about him, but it seems that playing weird openings is a way of making sure his opponent can't rely too much on theory opening and/or on strange opening traps. So Magnus is willing to give a little bit of an advantage by playing a move that's not optimal (or else it would be part of the main line), because he deems that he will be able to just outplay anyone when they're in uncharted territory.
Yeah, it's so interesting to me how Magnus can play any opening without caring and just deeply understanding the winning endgame structures/gradually builds towards those. His pawn moves were extremely educational to me (2150 lichess blitz player) Definitely it's great that Levy analyzes them, helpful for me too xD :) It would've taken me a lot longer to draw some of the same conclusions. I love this compilation of games. Hoping to see the same for his challenger, Ian Nepo and his tactical brilliances. Excellent video here Levy. Biggest fan and I watch every vid. Best commentary. He should be helping Peter Drury with the commentary of United against Liverpool tomorrow
You are a good teacher. You are where you should be. I like how you explain Carlson's moves. It makes me think that Magnus is always thinking about how to keep all of his pieces in the best position and doesn't get tunnel vision on trying to execute a specific attack. He doesn't mind trading pieces as long is he never loses his control of the board overall.
Hope to see GothamChess keep entering into chess tournaments. I hope he does not let adversity deter him from fighting to reach GM to which I believe he should get.
Apparently this is how many GMs felt playing Fischer. It's not like they blundered a single losing move, he just slowly outplayed them over the entire game.
You're so great, man. Your commentary is amazing and lucid. And the way you get excited about the game is so entertaining and motivating. Keep the good job!
You know how when you watch lower rated players, you can identify their patterns and predict the kind of mistakes they tend to make or tactics they dont anticipate. I wonder if there is something specific that Magnus can identify in other grandmasters' games that he could specifically point out that they don't even know. Maybe it's just being more consistent. But maybe there is that little something he knows that gives him that edge.
As Levy said, it seems that he just doesn't give a shit. lol He is never afraid to change the position or whatever. Kinda like how an engine always finds the best move even if a position is lost aand it cant have emotions about it.. Obviously, other GMs can almost always find the best move but Magnus will just completely deviate from what "He should do" or how a position "should be played." and just continue on finding the best moves, and acting like nothing happened. I feel like that messes with even the other top guys. Ever notice how Hikaru does weird faces on stream when he sees something unfamiliar? I feel like Magnus just isnt fazed by anything. A tiny difference like that can matter, just overall mindset. On top of that, he will literally just play a single game for like 12 hours and not care.
This has me wondering: who's the lowest rated player who has beaten Carlsen in classical since, say, 2010. Does anybody know? He has barely lost in classical right?,
After watching your tournament series and the number of different lines that need to be figured out, I have a new appreciation for how hard it is to actually do this.
today I finally broke 400 elo. which I know isn't impressive but feels good to actually see some improvement in my game. The alphazero videos actually helped a lot. I use alphazero's opening now for white and since I've started using it I have like a 80 percent win percentage with white. i still suck with black though lol
Try the kings indian. Helped me alot. I went from 300 to 660(my current rating ) in blitz without much hassle. Ofc try to minimise blunders. I make a shit ton of em and end up punching the air aggressively . Idk if it'll work in matchups with higher rated players...but for beginners like me I think the kings indian is pretty good and safe.
You have to obviously learn qgd theory and Sicilian for black as 400+ alpha zero opening is good try learning sf14 as well then you can hope for one day reaching 500.
I’d suggest something really solid like a caro kann or french defense with black. At lower elo, just play solid and your opponent will eventually self-destruct.
32:33 me: hey I saw that move! Levy: which just looks utterly ridiculous me: yep, uh-huh, totally agree, knew that the whole time, what is Magnus doing?

Magnus Carlsen is the only player that consistently makes me think, "is he actually ten steps ahead?"
35:18 the way he said the Nani meme was soooo clean
35:20 Levy is trying to talk in japanese but Russian accent kicks in!
Hope to see GothamChess keep entering into chess tournaments. I hope he does not let adversity deter him from fighting to reach GM to which I believe he should get.
Me: E4
Magnus: Smirks
Me: I resign.
I’m convinced that Magnus started playing chess just to pass time until he chooses to reveal himself as the god emperor.
35:20 stuff like this makes this not only educational but entertaining. Plus it’s chess so that’s always fun to watch
I learned that bishops and knights can move backwards whenever by watching these Magnus games
@27:06 LOLOLOL! The reference to Anderson Silva vs Forrest Griffin MMA fight is absolutely brutal!!
31:12
being polite to such things before it became "mainstream" as to say. Respect
Magnus reminds me of Capablanca in his play. The simplicity and flexibility of exchanging one advantage for another.
Magnus inserted his rook into Levy's open file
🤣🤣🤣 Ik this is copied but it's too funny
Haha, nice job with the Anderson Silva Forrest Griffin reference, "swoosh swoosh boink I give up" 😂
Whenever I play chess I try to play like Magnus Carlsen but I end up more like Carlos Magnusen
26:55 Magnus’ shoes is almost as impossible as Worcestersceshtcishre sauce
Finally Levy's thumbnail editor is back after a long vacation.
You sir are a man of culture. The "omae wa mo shindeiru" part absolutely killed it. I love your videos sir and this one is by far the best.
35:18 Best part of the video, I laughed so hard 🤣
I think what I like about Magnus is that he is -to a terrifying degree- cold blooded on the board but humble and funny outside of the game.
Day 2 of reminding everyone that Levy prefers us over Twitch chat because we don't make the same jokes over and over again.
Isn't the "Day x" thing just a joke being told over and over?
@@thisbethedave Congratulations, you got the joke...
I feel like there's a logical inaccuracy in this endeavour
I also feel like it's probably the whole joke
Day one of politely asking people to dont do the ask joke
@@maedhros9285 not funny
Apparently this is how many GMs felt playing Fischer. It's not like they blundered a single losing move, he just slowly outplayed them over the entire game.
YES, and the exchanging of one kind of position for another is also Fischer-esque.
You're so great, man. Your commentary is amazing and lucid. And the way you get excited about the game is so entertaining and motivating. Keep the good job!
35:05 Lmao I love that there's still energy this late in the video
You know how when you watch lower rated players, you can identify their patterns and predict the kind of mistakes they tend to make or tactics they dont anticipate. I wonder if there is something specific that Magnus can identify in other grandmasters' games that he could specifically point out that they don't even know. Maybe it's just being more consistent. But maybe there is that little something he knows that gives him that edge.
As Levy said, it seems that he just doesn't give a shit. lol
He is never afraid to change the position or whatever.
35:21 I think Levy should voice this dialogue in every Anime.
25 mins in and GC throws out a 15 year old UFC reference. I appreciate the balance...
brilliant video . It amazes me how Magnus extracts win from almost drawn game. Levy you have outdone yourself with this video.👍
This has me wondering: who's the lowest rated player who has beaten Carlsen in classical since, say, 2010. Does anybody know? He has barely lost in classical right?,
@John Dew Don't forget Esipenko and Bu xiangxi. But he has blundered vs 2500 Gm's in classical but forgoy the names.
2200 in 2014
Yannick Pelletier in 2015, who was rated around 2550
@@uzanuda I see, thanks
at 24:07, why not just trade the bishop for blacks knight? doesn't white pick up the e6 pawn and still be able to close the position?
Even if am dreaming about me fighting him in chess he still beats the shit outa me 🙂
After watching your tournament series and the number of different lines that need to be figured out, I have a new appreciation for how hard it is to actually do this.
today I finally broke 400 elo. which I know isn't impressive but feels good to actually see some improvement in my game. The alphazero videos actually helped a lot. I use alphazero's opening now for white and since I've started using it I have like a 80 percent win percentage with white. i still suck with black though lol
I've been bouncing between 700-800 for a long time. If you break through at any level and maintain it, you can feel good about it.
Try the kings indian. Helped me alot. I went from 300 to 660(my current rating ) in blitz without much hassle. Ofc try to minimise blunders. I make a shit ton of em and end up punching the air aggressively . Idk if it'll work in matchups with higher rated players...but for beginners like me I think the kings indian is pretty good and safe.
maybe look into the french defence with black, it's solid and avoids some of the nonsense white can attempt in 1. e4
Levy: which just looks utterly ridiculous
me: yep, uh-huh, totally agree, knew that the whole time, what is Magnus doing?
Magnus - alright which chess master do I have for breakfast...?
Levy - *gulp*
10:28 personally I'd take the knight to damage the pawn structure but with both flanks pawns on the board I know that's wrong.
Are there really only a couple thousand titled players, damn gotham kinda good at chess
Yeah about 5000 GMs and IMs.
@9:58 opponent accepts queen trade...Magnus 'that's all I needed. That's when it became personal with me'
Magnus Carlsen might be the GOAT of endgames but Gotham is the GOAT of streamers
Please make a series on "top ten GMs vs rest of mortals", after this video, I really start wondering that if its just about Magnus, or every "super GM" possesses the same skill.
Day 1 of writing to levy to continue the ELO SWAP series, I loved that!
Though I am a chess dummy , with dyscalculia, I truly love your shows ; you make it easier to comprehend than most folks. Very fun : subscribing atm
Not to brag, but I have never been defeated by a single gm.
Cause you haven't played any of them
@@sujitpatil2607 that's the joke.
Same , does that make us wizards?
@@user-svqmbiv I know
Only the taken GMs?

Levy: let me flex a little bit but still keep myself as a humble person
Analysis from the losers point of view against Magnus with the engine to see how he could have been beat.
That light square play in game 2 is so easy, yet ridiculous. In a blitz game also...
The tittle should rather be *How levy Rozman crushes Chess masters*
If you know what I am referring to
Levy I don't know if you can see this, but your videos helped me to move forward in chess. I started the beginning this year with some basic knowledge and yesterday I reached 1000 elo in rapid. Thanks for all the instructive and funny videos!
