Horowitz had played this piece in his recitals since at least 1926, evidence that he was early on realizing the pure beauty of the piece.
The last recital season this piece was played was 1975-1976, and before that it had been played a few times at the end of 1968 as well. This video contains performances from those two periods. The 1975 one is definitely more emotionally rich and lead to more dramatic mood swings with some dangerous challenges to the atmosphere of the enire. On the other hand, the performance from the 1968 tend to pursue more stability and calm overall.
One thing to note is that this piece has many intricate difficulties that are belied by the calm mood with which a successful performance is often imbued. The main theme of the piece comprises a pattern of arpeggiated semiquavers in the right hand with short notes in the left, firstly played below the right hand and then played two octaves higher, above the right hand. This constant crossing over of hands places considerable technical demands on the pianist.

This piece by Liszt, is a testament to Horowitz's supreme greatness; this and Schubert's impromptu in g flat major, op. 90 no. 3. Everybody knew of the sound he could bring out of the instrument ( powerfully ). But soft nuances and connecting lines in these two gems, no one else touches, at least for me. With Horowitz, the story behind the music, is always there.

I totally agree, my hero and idol my whole life, to me Op. 90 #4 is true perfection, when I heard this music here today watching the score with its key changes and following the notes as he plays them, it's astounding the clarity and pedaling perfection, to me this is the greatest pianist in history...

I'm saying this as Horowitz' #1 fan, the '75 performance is not good. The tone and character and delicacy of the '68 is streets ahead.
