January 7, 1965: Carnegie Hall, New York City, New York (Studio) Horowitz was preparing for his momentous return in 1965, after a hiatus of twelve years. Given the profound influence he had previously left on the music world, this was an event that was bound to create massive ripples. In preparation for his once again debut at Carnegie Hall, he went through multiple rehearsals by renting the en...

May 22, 1982: Royal Festival Hall, London, England (Live) Horowitz returned to England after 31 years since 1951, at the invitation of Prince Charles. He presented his most famous repertoire, including Rachmaninoff Sonata and Chopin's Ballade. Schumann's Kinderszenen also was performed in honor of the impending birth of Prince William. As Prince Charles was in attendance, Horowitz begins with "...

I heard Horowitz play this in Toronto in 1976. He was said to be 'ill at ease' with the work. He dropped it from his repertoire after one season.

Way too fast. The lovely Poulenc melodies got lost in the hustle. Horowitz always had amazing fingers. But just because you can play faster than anyone else does not mean that you should. Just saying.

This is not atypical for pianists of Horowitz's era. There was a time when pianists took great liberties with the music of their predecessors. Their predecessors took great liberties with the music of their predecessors and their own works. Listz was notorious for not playing a piece of his own music the same way twice. I would not call this an arrangement as it is not too dissimilar from the work as written. Historical recordings (before the 1930s) can be illuminating and sometimes confronting. Modern pianists pretty much play the music as written, there seems to be little thirst for taking liberties these days.

While there are millions of useless nonsense on social media, we can witness an unforgettable night in 1978 at the Lincoln Center NY with Zubin Metha and the icon Vladimir Horowitz performing Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 3 with the New York Philharmonic. This reminds me of memorable nights I had the privilege of participating in a club for classical music lovers in São Paulo, Brazil, in the 80s and 90s where personalities like Horowitz were worshipped in our nights through the technological innovations of the time: the CD and the Video Laser. Good memories. Thank you for making this video available.

Great rendition of this, recorded in Feb but the great "TV Concert" of 1968 was inexplicably broadcast on Rosh Hashonah, 22/Sept. Horowitz at his best, also played the G minor Ballade etc.

Magnificent. Proof of the Horowitz legend. The "tornado from the steppes." Most people are only familiar with the Horowitz of the stereo era when he was well over 60 or 70 or even 80 (in Moscow). It is always thrilling to listen to his prime, even if it is in Mono. The same is true of Callas, Arrau, Rubinstein, and some others. You can find his Liszt Sonata from the 1930s.
