  • Doug Canning - Combat Pilot in Three Wars. Piloted a P-38 on the Yamamoto mission.
    Flew 67 Missions Guadalcanal, first tour P-400's, 2nd and 3rd tour P-38.
    In Korea he flew 37 P-51 Missions and 64 A-26 reconnaissance missions on the Chinese and Russian borders.
    In Vietnam he flew the C-133, carrying helicopters.
    He Retired in 1969 as Lt Colonel after 29 years service.

    That's my Uncle Doug. He was a great man. He told me the story of when they found Yamamoto and it wasn't exactly like the movie portrayed it. He told me stories of flying planes in WW2, Korea and Vietnam. On the Yamamoto mission I remember him telling me how they had to fly their planes a great distance just 12 feet above the water as not to be picked up on radar. One time I asked him why he didn't get into flying for a commercial airline after his service and he told it's like this. Once you've been driving Farias why would you want to drive a bus.
