Really should have given credit where credit is due. JPJ wrote the riff. This is why they were so great every member was a perfect fit and irreplaceable
The sheer attack on Page outro solo is quite incredible. Stumbling ... Bumbling ... Tripping ... all so brilliant! The stuff Jimmy comes up with on the spot!
Terrific video! That said…see the lyrics Hey hey mama said the way you move Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove Ah, ah, child, way you shake that thing Gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting. (Not stink)

The structure of 'Black Dog' is based on Fleetwood Mac's 'Oh Well', that one thay says, "I can't help about the shape I'm in I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin But don't ask me what I think of you I might not give the answer that you want me to...
What made this song so unique, is that Jimmy Page, after the bridge of the song, changed the time signature and the the key note of the song, and this was not mentioned. Even worse, when Jimmy changed the Key Note of the song, he only dropped it down a 'Half-Step' in the note progression, which on paper is impossible to make it sound good! IMPOSSIBLE I DECLARE!!!! Nobody (of consequence) has ever attempted such a 'Musical Theory Violation' and made it work, as Jimmy did with other Zepp songs, such as 'Kashmir'. In the song 'Kashmir', Bonham was strictly on a 4/4 time signature while Jimmy and John Paul were on a 11/12 time signature. THE WHOLE SONG???!?!? Impossible! Yet! Jimmy & John Paul made it work! I mean, how do you fit a 5 lbs. of something into a 4.2 lbs. bag limit? In 'Black Dog', Jimmy started the song in a 4/4 time sig, and then after the bridge, he changed it into a 7/8 time signature... nobody does that... nobody did that before. "THIS DOES NOT COMPUTE! -SYNTAX ERROR -SYNTAX ERROR" but it DID work, and THIS IS WHY most bands never attempted to play 'Black Dog" live. In order to accomplish this, one must be a complete musical professional. My meaning is that just knowing Musical Theory is NOT enough, to exist within the rules of Music and change it to your will, and make it sound unique and rhythmic. Just by simply holding onto a note or break for a half-beat, or, working a note into the extremely unique timing is a super difficult feat, because the other band mates are tasked to be able to acknowledge this transition and maintain their timing, despite the timing contradicting the standard, which most are accustomed too! THIS IS WHY JIMMY PAGE is considered one of the best. Go ask Geddy Lee or Trevor Rabin if they agree. Sure we have Trevor Rabin, Joe Satriani, & Eddie Van Halen, that are all progressive GIANTS, their contribution is nothing short of magic and considered phenomenal, but... Jimmy was in the same boat, with not many seats, and Jimmy knew what people wanted to hear and that makes Jimmy Da Best! The Band's success proves my statement. Don't get me wrong, Rush & Yes were very successful & awesome, but... they didn't sell tickets like Zeppelin did, or records, and that is the proof in the puddin!
James Patrick Page + Robert Antony Plant + John Richard Baldwin + John Henry Bonham, the juggernaut of Valhalla, best band EVER. Greetings from Danmark 🤜🇩🇰🤛
They all made it work. Bonham’s playing was brilliant! He plays a 4/4 groove over a 5/4 time sig. Not a forced thing like Rush might do. Just great music
I remember when Eddie Van Halen said Jimmy Page was a Sloppy player, well that is the difference between Eddie Van Halen he may have had his distinct and innovative way of playing guitar that’s what makes Jimmy Page a GENIUS of playing guitar and playing guitar great, he knew how to put a song together. And then with Robert Plants vocals playing off Page makes it incredible that and with Jones’s timing and Bonham THUNDEROUS drums , untouchable.🤩
So at 60 years old one of my great memories of those years was April 10th 1995 in the old Boston Garden, last show to play there before they closed the doors forever. Page/Plant played 23 songs that night, the last song of the night was Kashmere the second song of the oncor, the song before that was Black Dog. I was on the side of the stage where Page was and as long as I live I will not forget that night. What a fantastic concert and it was mostly Zeppelin Music. You can look up the play list from that night and see all they played. I still have the shirt I bought that night 29 years ago. The mighty Led Zeppelin.
The time signature changes are very tough to figure out for those of us who are not well schooled. For those who think they can figure it out, try tapping or dancing to it and see what happens. They will leave you wondering what hit you.
The lyrics are: Hey hey mama said the way you move Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove Ah, ah, child, way you shake that thing Gonna make you burn, gonna make you sting. Sting not stink … LZ is sexy not an STD Fail
I hear the lyric as "gonna make you burn, gonna make you stain". Go back and listen very carefully to the soundtrack'73 version, then the 02 Arena '07 version. I was 14 in'76 getting to see the soundtrack film on its debut weekend outside Houston,TX. And in my listening for nearly 50 years now, l hear Percy say stain, not sting. A reference to the chicks-birds in Brit slang getting "Hots On For Nowhere". Pun intended!
Jones has said that "if the riff is single notes, it's probably mine. If it's chord-y, it's Page's", or something like that. I would love to have him detail which exactly were his and which were Page's.
Not one time in this video does it mention that is was John Paul Jones who initially came up with the riff while warming up. Page was taken with it and developed the song, then of course Plant coma up with the lyrics. If it wasn't for Jones this song would never have been. Surprised it wasn't stated that part of this songs genius and slap your face attitude that puts this riff over the top, is Jimmy Playing Electric Guitar while Jones is doubling up and playing the same riff on BASS! Gives it such depth and attitude. It is true that to play it properly the way Page intended can be a Bit#$ to figure out. Most players learn the riff wrong from the start, then one day someone shows them or they figure out the right way, it blows ya away and keeps a smile on your face for quite some time. Not that it''s overly difficult, rather it's the way Page does it. Nice Video overall , Fantastic song!
A lot of that type try this and that. Many are along those lines - with extreme and very alternative twisting, doggedness of twang and other sort of stuff. Many buttocks were thrust one way and another with grit and determination. These days, curry may be the nearest answer - who knows??! 😮
It would be worthwhile to also note that in the O2 arena version as well as other bootlegged live performances, Page plays one of the runs off-tone. Try to analyze that one.
Now that I've heard the riff 12 times without some kind of breakdown or explanation or reason for this video(and I'm not even 1/2 way through it ) it's time to go.
Stolen like most everything the conceited crooks played. And the most stupid lyrics of the 1970', showing why those guys were better not writing their own thing.
Courtesy of the silent assassin, John Paul Jones!
I don’t care what anybody says, Led Zeppelin was is & always will be, The Greatest Band Ever!!!
Amen!! Without question!!
Yep!
page GOAT
@@alittlebitofeverything6547 he actually is one of the 4 GODS of MUSIC in Led Zeppelin.
I saw their last American show, Oakland, July 24, 1977…
Showing them in the 70’ and again 30+ years later is fantastic. Old geezers rule.
Damn right my friend
I'm 64 on September hiatus of going bzco😊
Don't forget, Black Dog was John Paul Jones riff.
They go on and on about the guitar riff of greatness, yet miss that was written by the BASS player
Yes it was
Uh, I'm pretty sure that EVERYBODY knows this by now..Jonesy showed up with the riff..🤔
@@kensalazar5066 Apparently not EVERYBODY. The UA-cam Page owner didn't know.
@@zepman9200 ha ha ha, I'm sure they knew....its ol news
Name another group that can produce so many classic rock riffs plus a masterclass in folk and acoustic tracks ? There is no band to touch the Zep !
THE GREATEST BAND EVER HANDS DOWN !!!❤😊
Amazing electrifying Led Zeppelin left an indelible mark, Thank You incredible story!!👍😍
Thanks for the Led Zeppelin video. My favorite band since 1969 !
I saw Led Zeppelin in Oakland California July 23rd 1977 😮
The greatest band ever!
Mine too
Saw them in 72 at the LA Forum ! Peace Brothers and Sisters ! 🤩
Saw them on the same tour in Cincinnati.
Really should have given credit where credit is due. JPJ wrote the riff. This is why they were so great every member was a perfect fit and irreplaceable
Jones wrote the middle 8. The beginning and end are pure Jimmy Page, pure genius.
The sheer attack on Page outro solo is quite incredible. Stumbling ... Bumbling ... Tripping ... all so brilliant! The stuff Jimmy comes up with on the spot!
Thank you John Paul Jones.
This is the best Zeppelin riff, and that's saying a lot.
Zep's best riffs - Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love, and Bring It On Home.
Terrific video!

The riff was from JPJ.
If any other band plays this, it's a great rock riff. When Zeppelin starts it, it explodes.

I hope the video blogger realizes the main picture for this video is not Jimmy Page, but Jimmy Sakurai playing him in a tribute band.
Jimmy Sakurai is also featured at 6:11

Try counting and don't start at the one start off at the 3and.....
listen to it live, near the end Bonzo goes wild on bass drum.
Black Dog never screwed me up, but it screwed up many of my drummers!
The title should read... John Paul JONES: The CORNERSTONE Of Rock RIFFS "We Are Led ZEPPELIN!"

Yes he did!
It hasn't let me down
It's NOT Led Zeppelin IV. The album is UNTITLED!
y'all did Dave Lewis dirty
Ive never seen Page play stairway accurately.

Funny that as great as Black Dog is - and it is - it's not even the best song on that album side .....
This is a song written by John Paul Jones

John Paul Jones created the riff
I'm a massive zep fan never really got how black dog was so popular to me whole lotta love way better and the rover 10 times better
I'm also a massive zep fan. I can`t get why somebody would not like black dog as much as I like. lol

Think it’s a straight forward blues rift? No it’s not. Give it go and see how long it takes you to get it right.
Saw some videos on it. Time signatures are funky as hell. Different people are working off of different beats at the same time.
one can see the black dog if you have a mirror
Yet again a flagrant lack of recognition to John Paul Jones. This is one of the few riffs he wrote himself, but the whole video ignored this.
Great song I love, but heavily influenced by Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well.
Black Dog is not a difficult riff. Every intermediate guitar player who is into Rock can play it.
The cornstone of rock riffs is Richie Blackmore not Jimmy page
They were the dogs b…….s 😂
Please , the content is good, lose the idiotic captions...
And the spelling ,Dave Lewis not
Lewish
Gonna make you stink??? Uhhhh nope
Zeppelin and Sabbath. Everything after them is just…..not as good!
Where did they steal it from
Stolen like most everything the conceited crooks played.
