We had a Manze's pie and ell shop in Woolwich. I loved going there to eat plus their jelly ells was lovely. And as a kids meal we had double mash potato with liquor I always had to look in the window at all the ells wriggling around in the shop window when I got of the bus from school as it stopped right outside the shop
One time I was sitting down to pie and mash. A bloke came in and asked ‘Do you do fish and chips?’ The reaction by the diners was one of total insincerity. I thought they might lynch the bloke in times gone by. Even after he left, there were some utterances of despair 😂
Great review subscrabed. Becacase I saw you flip the pie upside down into the liquor. Just learned some london pie shops use short crust on the base flakey on the top tell me which is best. Live in Cincinnat but from Cheshire.
I have no problem with pie & mash, but stop trying to tell me that "parsley sauce liquor" is better with a beef-based pie than beef gravy. That's just overly-traditional nonsense.

It's because it is simple as that it goes with the pie and mash much better.
One is Liquer, the other is Gravy, both good, but liquer is traditional for the London dish....malt vinegar and white pepper of course.
