- Today we are in another historic, famous and infamous New York City neighborhood none other than Southside Jamaica Queens, the home of hip hop royalty like 50 Cent and many more. This neighborhood and it's immediate surrounding communities are famous in the hip hop world and infamous in the drug trade/criminal world.
Historically South Jamaica has always been one of New York City's roughest neighborhoods, at least once it transitioned away from farmland. Although still a tough area, nowadays the area has improved from what it once was. This place was considered a slum for the better part of the 20th century.
In today's video, we drive around South Jamaica and tour some of the main strips and hot spots including Sutphin Boulevard, Baisley Park Houses, Rochdale Village, Guy R. Brewer Boulevard and South Jamaica Houses aka 40 Projects.

Nice to see small business is still alive.
Wonder how many chin ups homie banged out in the beginning?
He was getting it in. At least 10 before I took off
If you go up there you can't do less than 10 .
Some of the nicest people you could ever meet around there. There is a lot of crime in certain parts but there are a lot of good people as well. I used to work there around 20 years ago. I made a lot of great friends & memories. I'm a white guy & they always made me feel welcome. Never had a problem. Don't believe the hype. If you mind your own business nobody will bother you.
147 and Rockaway Blvd !!!❤
Was that somebody doing pull ups on a lampost at the beginning lol
Yeah he was getting it in lol
Every hood real got a brother doing pull ups on the lamp post .
Thanks to concienteous African American and Caribbean American homeowners, independent small business owners, forward thinking religious leaders like former Congressman and Reverend Floyd Flake and other dedicated politicians, the Southeast Queens area has managed to weather the storms of urban blight. When some home prices now sit at $1.2 million, I would say that the neighborhood and its residents ain't doing that bad!!!
Flake was one of the most crooked politicians in all of Southeast queens, most of Guy, R Brewer Boulevard as well as farmers Boulevard have churches right next-door to one another with little to no people even patronizing most of these places since the pandemic . The biggest church in all of south east queens is the one that used to be headed by Floyd Flake, Allen, AME Cathedral. As far as home values, go, most of these folks are trying to sell out as gentrification has already started right by Sutphin Boulevard and archer Avenue. The homes down the street from Floyd flakes church are houses that are worth millions of dollars as those places used to be home to some of the most famous African-Americans in the country.
The area you are referring to is called Addisleigh Park whose famous residents included Count Basie, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Illinois Jacquet, Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Joe Louis, Milt Hinton, Roy Campanella, Percy Sutton, Cootie Williams and others. You are absolutely correct about the “Black Flight” phenomena that is taking place currently. Unlike the “White flight” exodus of the ‘50’s & ‘60’s that saw White folks fleeing from Queens to areas like Long Island, New Jersey and PA, Black folks are doing a moonwalk back to the South, especially GA where a brand new home costs much less than the old 1930’s built homes in many Queens neighborhoods.
@@cleanbowled1767 I did know the formal name of the area, I just didn’t want to look like an idiot by attempting to spell it. I had a friend who lived in that area for many years before his parents sold their home to move across the country. I used to always be over in that area as a child when me and my family attended the church that looks like a ginormous triangle. another famous person who lived in that area was the former news reporter for fox channel 5 by the name of Bill McCrarey.
@@yell0wberry Good stuff!!! I can't lie but I did look up the spelling which threw me for loop. On a serious note, I know this is a good and entertaining video since it has us talking and reminiscing.
@yell0wberry it's being gentrified by east Indian. You think it's a wrap for black folks in NYC?
I lived in ohio when I was 16 the people were so caring and nice to me knowing I was young and without my family never forget kindness I felt
South Jamaica has changed within the last 5 to 10 years. The newest population is Bangladeshi. However, I still wouldn't go there if I didn't have to.
I'm from UK 🇬🇧 the area looks so clean no yobs on streets terrorising people honestly I'd exchange my place right now
You would be a mad man to go from the uk to south side Jamaica good luck😂
lmao cap the uk crazy soft
2:29…… across the street out of the cameras view is a place called RCL, it’s the second best soul food restaurant in the area with the rib shack being the best, if it’s still around
What about that Mississippi Jerk Hut that used to be on Baisley about a block or 2 before Merrick? Looked like a little shack. I thought it was way better than the Rib Shack.
5:47……. those particular projects is the place where one of the single biggest drug bust in southeast Queens Took place .that building was all but runned by the notorious supreme team.
I wonder if 50 Cent ever goes back to the hood to see his old stomping grounds and hook up with his homies?
He definitely does ! L.O.S.T B.O.Y.Z
Prinz da pistoler from black hand ent is from queens if anyone remembers him from smack dvd
Was expecting to see more Jamaicans in this video
PS 40 is a clean quiet school, where learing takes place
If I respect myself, I will respect others,
What I do and say, reflects on my family.
Don't tell me the fish place on Guy Brewer is closed down.
Jamaica is know for van stealing & jacking way back in the 70's & 80's i dont know if they still do it today though @GhettoMerica
It’s still has hood vibes to it, not nearly as crazy as it once was, though. A lot of the black folks are selling their homes, and moving to either Virginia, the Carolinas, or Georgia.
Bro see you know Southside Jamaica the worst area out the east coast period gun car jacking see gangs dealers people know cuz 50 cent describe it bro Southside the worst RN I'm in ATL my nephew when he heard me say Southside Jamaica the worst area out east coast he like no I'm like bro it is even rishing kanan power shows how it was Southside Jamaica the worst it bad it killin crimes twin
Bro list you know twin like let me tell you something bro my nephew here with me in ATL his dad from Southside Jamaica as well right bro I told my nephew Southside Jamaica is the worst area out the east coast he like nah it is he doesn't believe it but I do I ain't from Southside I was born in ATL raised in upstate been to CT no cap but I know about the area even 50 cent say it he know Southside Jamaica is worst out the east coast no cap💯💯💯💯💯
This is like paradise compared to places in Jamaica.
Yeah America has a structured govt and yet still has been as bad as 3rd world countries just imagine if the police present was prevelent America would be unmatched
The area that 50 is from near the conduit is a pretty nice area. If you go up on Linden, past Merrick to the Addisleigh Park area it is very nice over there. That's where all the black celebrities used to live back in the day. James Brown, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne etc. Some of their families still live there. It's a shame because the kids over there now walk around acting like they're all hood from the projects. Brainwashed with that ghetto mentality because it's not "cool" to live in a nice neighborhood. Their parents are doctors, lawyers & senators. They live in mini mansions but wanna treat it like it's the Ps.
Stop for coffee! They got a Dunkies. What we from Massachusetts call Dunkin Donuts!
Y’all gotta lotta projects there
i live here
"Streets need a body" " southside"
real nyc shit vid starts off wit a random doing pull ups not even knowin he on video
1:17…. this part is Nicki Minaj’s old, stomping grounds, neither one of those POS’s make much of an appearance in the immediate area anymore
Why would they?
@@Joseph-x8c on the strength of allegiance and pride in the community they came from. The lost boyz still have family in the same area and those guys make appearances every so often. Curtis Jackson did a piece of crap ceremony to donate a garden that sits in front of one of the projects off the corner of Foch and Guy Brewer Boulevard, which has since gone to pieces. With all the money, these rappers brag about having, the least, they could’ve done, was donated something extremely useful to the community and had it as a simple tax write off.
And the community would destroy it.
@@Joseph-x8c let’s not get nonsensical here, they are bad people within the community, but it’s definitely not a bad place, folks just want somewhere for them and their children to go that they can take great pride in. Down the street from that garden is Baisley Park, which is used for all kinds of events and is in great condition. Meanwhile, none of the locals destroyed the garden either, but thanks to the lack of maintenance, it doesn’t look much better than it did during its initial ceremony.

8:45……. this is the particular area where the members of the rap group onyx was raised in.
10:50…… this area is otherwise known as South Jamaica, houses, incorrectly referred to as the 40 projects. Back in its heyday, this was a place you definitely didn’t want to start trouble at otherwise these folks will finish it for you, believe that.
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge of the area. I appreciate you tuning in.
I remember when that dude from Hood Affairs DVD got killed shooting a video in 40 P's
Still like that Today DONT recomend stopping by any deli near the projects they run a tight nitt community & Will make you feel unwelcome
I love how some of my communities small businesses have been here for decades. I live; and have lived and spent time all over south side. We all know each other or know someone who knows someone. South side has produced many celebrities/rappers.
