Driving from Kumamoto as a base to mount aso is something we would recommend. It’s still about a 45-60 min drive up the mountain. This compared to at least 3/3,5 hours driving from Kagoshima. We wanted to be efficient and go immediately from Kagoshima to mount aso but we were very tired of the long journey after we arrived in Kumamoto. So we would definitely use Kumamoto as a base!
@@yesandexplore Thank you. For Kumamoto we would use 1 day to cover Mount Aso & 1 day cover Takachiho Gorge. Follow that cover Kagoshima for the Volcano. So wonder should end the car rental at Kagoshima and then use bullet train back to Fukuoka as still want visit Nagasaki.

It seem quite challenging to drive from Kagoshima to Mount Aso. Would it be better to base from Kamamoto to go Mount Aso?
