Injured Red-tailed Hawk Chick "K2" Retrieved From

- During the week of June 14, Red-tailed Hawk cam moderators and camera operators noticed that the middle-hatched nestling named K2 was inflicted with an unknown injury to the eye and bill. As days passed on, K2 became increasingly lethargic and had issues with eating food.
In consultation with wildlife veterinarians and rehabilitators at Cornell University, it became clear that K2's chances of survival without intervention was unlikely. So, on the morning of June 22, Cornell Lab staff made the decision to retrieve K2 from its nest so it could receive treatment for its injuries.
With the help of Cornell Facilities staff, Dr. Rolfe Radcliffe from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CUVM) and Ben Walters from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology successfully retrieved K2 from the nesting platform and delivered the chick into the expert care of the veterinarians at the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Health Center. While we hope for a full recovery, the chick’s survival is not guaranteed. We trust the treatment decisions and expert care provided by the wildlife veterinarians in regards to K2’s condition.
We are very grateful to the staff at Cornell Facilities, veterinarians at CUVM and Wildlife Health Center, wildlife rehabilitators, birders on the ground, and the hawk cam community for their support.
We will continue to provide updates on K2’s condition at www.allaboutbirds.org/cams/an....

A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University’s athletic fields since at least the 2012, making use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012 and 2015, they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. We installed cameras at both of these sites to get a better look at the intimate behavior of these well-known birds as they raise their young amid the bustle of a busy campus.

RIP beautiful creature. In a dark and desolate world watching you and siblings provided moments of light and life. 60 yr old crying like a baby.
51 year old doing the same.
One less beautiful creature in this world.

#1 thing K2 has going for him/her is Cornell Ornithology Labs. Couldn't be in any better hands.
Big Red spent some quality time feeding K3 today after the rescue. She was very attentive to her last nestling.
Thank you for posting this♥️ I’ve been watching them all from day one and today was at an appt and came home and was of course concerned. I’m so pleased K2 was rescued. K3 and his or her cries really brought tears to my eyes so your post really made me feel a bit better hearing this! Thanks 😊 ♥️
I hope I can watch this scene later. It's touching.
K3 was so worried about there nestling. Aww.
if you've ever heard red tail hawks calling alerts to intruders etc.. what you heard from K3 was exactly the same call
Brilliant capture. I was wildlife veterinarian at Mass. Audubon for 17 years, and have to commend them for their courage in allowing it to be filmed. Brilliant guys, kudos. Godspeed K2.
The livestream was turned off while they did this. Good decision. You never know how this could go. The other nestmate has not fledged yet. As well as this was done, they decided to show it afterward.
God Bless you all at Cornell. Class Acts ....all of you. . I am in tears literally.
Joy, and utter relief that help arrived for K2 and now, my fervent prayers to medical team and K2 for a recovery partnership. We can only hope, right? K1 and K3, you still keep my fists clenched with worry, but you can do this!
No such thing as God God's devil devils, no heaven and hell and no afterlife, get to grips with reality. Do you know how many birds die every day without you knowing, heck do you know how many human babies die every day. Your man made fictitious sky daddy did not save them, do you know why, because this phantasm does not exist.
It might sound harsh, but humans need to get to grips with reality.

Amazing capture, so smoothly handled. Poor sibling, K3, clearly distressed though! Wishing and hoping that K1 will recover now that she's in safe hands. She's a strong, brave RedTail. Many many Thanks to the three on the lift, and to Cornell and the Janet Swanson Wildlife Center!
I thought K3 was begging to be picked up too!! It was not afraid!
I rehabilitate BOP in Tulsa, OK...and I'm SO jealous of your lift!!! Several times a season, I receive a call regarding a chick that's left it's nest too early, or more likely, has been tossed from the nest during a storm. I've begged many a tree trimming company to PLEASE re-nest for me, using their equipment, and none have stepped up.
I hope, hope, hope this kid doesn't have WNV. He's a very sick bird, but I'm totally grateful for not only your cam, but for the experts on your staff. Well done.
I'm not certain, but I assume the lift came from university facilities department.
@@rjw8625 Yes...but I'm still jealous. :) Grateful, that they had access to one, but jealous because I don't. *sigh*
@@snlself I understand. Was thinking more along the lines of another set of entities for you to contact. Do any local schools have veterinary programs?

This was a rescue of absolute perfection. THANK YOU!!
Poor Red -Tailed Chick "K2" Hope he gets better.
for the millions of red tailed hawks NOT on camera - you rock...
Very glad they were able to retrieve K2. Hope they can help it recover and be set free. K3 sounded so pitiful watching what was unfolding with his sibling.
that was K3 sounding warning alert
Thank you for all you do! I’ve been watching the babies along with Big Red and Arthur since the beginning I didn’t realize K2 was injured! Please keep us updated with his or her recovery ❤️🩹 His wee sibling K3 broke my heart with his cries 😭

Thank u so much!!♥️
1) Poor K3! That’s one confused and frightened bird! It’s as if they were trying to say: “Hey! Let my big sib go, ya jerks!”
2) I believe I recognize one of the rescuers as the person who regularly replenishes the bird feeders at Sapsucker Woods. If so, then thanks for doing that! My husband and I watch that camera every morning!
3) Thanks for all you do for the hawks. May K2 make a full recovery. ❤️🩹
I was distracted by the guy in the dark blue 😅 but I hope K2 gets better and returns to the nest
Haha same here!
Liam hemsworth is an animal rehabber? 😆
Plaintive cries from the nest mate :'( Best wishes, K2!
RIP K2 you will.be missed. Thanks to all for those who tried to save K2😭Soar high little one!
I know that K2 needed help and will be getting it and will be fine, but my heart is breaking for baby K3 who I have a soft spot for anyway! 😢
Me too , K3’s cries are heartbreaking. I’ve been rooting for K3 and was happy to see it catch up with its siblings.
Poor little one awwwww just to die for my heart ❤️
So sad to read that K2 was unable to recover from the injuries. RIP little one 💔
Oh the sound coming from K3 is heartbreaking.
Rest In Peace little K2. Thank you to all who helped him 😭
Was so glad to see Big Red attending to K3. Hoping K2 makes a quick and complete recovery and will be able to return to its life here with its family until ready to start adult life
Good luck little one…❤️😘🙏
Oh, the poor darling! Here's hoping for a swift recovery for K2!
Was gutted to see on Twitter that very sadly K2 has left us to soar in a much more distant sky.....was so glad to have been able to watch his much too short life
K3 sounds quite forlorn. I hope things turn out OK for both of them.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING OUR BEAUTIFUL BIRDS! 🙏🙏
Thank goodness for the wildlife experts and vets that will care for the little one. Praying for a smooth recovery. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Grateful that K2 could be rescued without causing K3 to jump prematurely. S/he will be cared for by Big Red and Arthur, so I'm not that worried about the little hawk -- just hopeful for a successful fledge, and a return to health (and fledging) for K2! 💖
Poor brother or sister doesn’t know that it’s all ok 🥺🥺- hope K2 gets better!! ❤️❤️
I hope the youngster makes a complete recovery at the wildlife center! 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing your important work with these beautiful creatures.

Oh, heal up little (big) birdie!
Thank you! get better soon K2! 💗
Awesome job with the rescue. Keeping K2 in healing thoughts.
So happy the chick was rescued. Prayers for quick healing.
I really Hope that K2 recuperates. He/she definitely looks lethargic and did not show any resistance when the two men approached. The reaction of K3 was very different, speading its wing but at the same time showing distress. He seems to be alone in the nest. He's so very cute.
Great job guys! Thanks for all you do 👍😍
Poor babies. K3 certainly doesn't understand you're trying to help. I hope K2 recovers well and can meet their sibling again soon. Thank you staff for attending to their care!!
Thank you
K3, being a good sibling trying to protect K2. I'm sure Big Red and Arthur know that distress call and came running.
Cheers to the fearless team who brought K2 down for treatment, and to the experts doing all they can! I’ll be checking the link provided for updates and hoping for the best.
God bless you for intervening for this precious baby 🙏 I am praying for a full recovery 🙏🙏🙏 thank you so very much ♥️

Oh my heart goes out to the other little sibling with such a cry in its' little voice. I hope the hurt baby is ok and you can put him back quick.

Get better K2!!! We love you buddy.
The distressed cries from its sibling were heart wrenching. Poor birds.
What happened to k2?
Unknown injury- the red-tailed hawk bird cam has information in the updates and in the chat.
Injury to right side of beak and swelling near right eye were first noted ~ 6/17. Not sure what caused it though. Closeups showed thin layer of keratin on right side of beak is shredded. Hopefully beak can be repaired with acrylic and right eye is not compromised.
@@johnporter6263 thanks so much for that info.
Poor little guy.
Power to K2, transmitted by these two gentle wizards. Such sweet buzzards.
"Buzzards" referring, of course, to the buteos, not the bipeds.
Oh my. Take care! 🌸🐌💙
My heart breaks for both K2 and K3. Let's all give hope to the successful recovery of K2 so the chicks can be reunited and continue on their journey.
Yay! I have been wondering if one was having a problem. I’m so happy help has arrived.
Good job guys! Now lets hope all goes well with examination etc.
How have I missed this?! I’m so sad about this! These beautiful little angels. Please give us an update regarding K2. This is upsetting news because we watch these babes hatch, grow up and we get so attached to them. We love you K2 - please make it through💕
How did this bird get injured?
Was it injured or sick? I guess I never realized that something was wrong!
Thanks for the question! The cause of the injury is unknown at this stage. If details about the chick's injury are surfaced during treatment, we will provide updates at this link www.allaboutbirds.org/cams/an...
It has had swelling of the right side of its face for about a week. The speculation, and this is just that, is an impacted bone fragment lodged in its mouth while eating.
@cornell lab bird cams Thank you so much for the link ❤️ and for rescuing the chick
@@rjw8625 that must be incredibly painful for a young bird.

From allaboutbirds.org :
June 25 Update: We have sad news to share about K2, the injured nestling from the Cornell Hawks nest that was transported to the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital on June 22. There, K2 received emergency care and advanced diagnostics to assess the nature and extent of injuries and determine treatment. Unfortunately, X-rays and other testing revealed severe and irrecoverable injuries that would have prevented K2’s survival in the wild or quality of life in captivity. Because of this, and the chronic pain associated with this condition, the wildlife veterinarians made the difficult but compassionate decision to euthanize K2.
We are grateful to the team at the Wildlife Hospital for providing K2 with supportive care and treatment. Advanced diagnostic testing revealed extensive injuries that were not outwardly visible, including a large abscess under K2’s right eye above the bill and a deep infection in the facial bones leading to irreversible structural damage, impairing K2’s ability to see, breathe, and eat. After full assessment and the extent of damage and prognosis for continued suffering became clear, K2 was euthanized out of compassion on June 24.
We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the Wildlife Hospital for their care of K2 and their expertise and availability to help our local wildlife in distress every day of the year. We’d like to thank everyone who provided guidance or supported the efforts to help K2 receive care for its injuries, including Cornell veterinarians, wildlife rehabilitators, and facilities staff, as well as the birders on the ground and cam moderators. Finally, we’d like to thank the cam community for their love and support of K2.
continuing from allaboutbirds.org :
FAQ:
Q: Why did K2 have such a bad abscess?
A: The original cause is unknown, although infections can sometimes occur after injury to the mouth from a sharp object such as a bone.
Q: Could K2’s infection have been healed with antibiotics?
A: The bone infection was very deep, and although it is possible that the infection could have been healed with prolonged use of antibiotics, clearing it would not have repaired the extensive loss of bone structure resulting from the initial infection, and K2 would have continued suffering from those injuries along with the possibility of recurring infections.
Q: How can I help the Wildlife Hospital continue to offer care to injured wildlife?
A: You can support the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital’s efforts by making a gift online via this page.
Q: Why did it take a few days to provide any information about K2’s condition?
A: It was important for the wildlife veterinarians to prioritize providing care and complete diagnostic testing for K2 and many other animals in need. We are grateful for the time they took to discuss K2’s condition with us so that we could update the Bird Cams community as soon as possible.
Oh poor baby. I sure hope K2 will have a full recovery. Is K3 going to be ok without it’s sibling? It sounded so sad when K2 left 😓
Get well soon, K2.

Poor K3 sounds desolate as he finds himself alone in the nest. But K2 had to be removed for treatment. I hope the vets can diagnose and successfully treat K2 so he can lead a full life.

I just commented yesterday about that inferior nest and nesting location! 🥺 Hoping all will be okay!
