Seth: Now, what makes you do this interview?
Sean: Good question ? I always want to do for the Deaf community anything. I am a big fan of IDeaf News, I always watch it...Sean continues: Sean is amazed on how much Seth had to travel all over the country and the world. Sean can?t imagine how Seth can do it. So, Sean wanted Seth to come and interview Sean from the IDeaf News to share to the Deaf community.
Seth: Travel all those places is not easy for his time, job, etc.? Seth spend a lot of money on the budget the on travelling.
Seth: How did SAB impact your life from the begin to end?
Sean says: Sean started when he was a little boy giving a performances at his parent?s bedroom with his brother. They set up the music speaker really loud and feel the vibration while the musice was playing. He made the admission ticket to watch their shows. Sean and his brother practice jump and flip over on the parent?s bed. Gave the ticket to the parents and they went to watch their performances at 6 p.m. The parents sat on the office chairs to watch their two sons performing when they got the ticket. That is how Sean became passionated and wanted to be involved performing. He was involved in commercial agency and few movies when he was younger. The Sandlot 2 was his 1st movie. It was the first Fox Movie in his career. That is how it changed and made him admire in the performing act to impact his life. His philosophy in life is to be stable and let the things happens as part of his path. He was not expecting to become an actor on SAB TV show. It has really changed his life so much. Seth: When you heard about SAB ? how did they choose you to be part of the show ?
Sean: Funny story- when SAB announced the need to find Deaf actor as Emmett. That time, Sean was a student at Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD). Sean figured out, how could he fly to L.A. while he is student at ISD? So Sean decided to set up a video with the web camera to shot himself while he performed. He contact the Casting agency. He sent his video for them to watch ? He cut some clips of him performaing and included closed captioned on the video. Sean said he has to market himself to the agency. That is how he does on the business. He sent the video link to that company. Between 3 to 4 hours later they called him. They wanted him to fly to L.A. immediately. They wanted to see Sean in person instead of video. So, Sean flew to L.A. to interview with the producers and writer, etc? That time, he was 16 years old. He was overwhelmed and not prepared to see these people at same time nervous and excited. His parents bought him the flight ticket to Los Angeles. He met with the production crew, interpreter, etc? He had not hearing from them for three weeks. Sean thought, he would not be selected for the of Emmett on SAB. Whoever were selected to that role, he would congratulate him. Then, he got an email from the producer. They decided to choose him as Emmett. Sean was very thrilled, he said it was a good experience.
Seth: Wow, that must be so inspiring for you when they chose you as Emmett. It is real world acting, you must have been really excited.
Sean: Oh yeah, I couldn't imagine it?. Good feeling.
Seth: SAB has impacted the Deaf community? Isn?t it impacting the hearing community too ?
Sean: yes, it impacted both, Deaf and hearing communities? Some Deaf people dislike it some like it.. It depends on each individual. Most of the hearing students (interpreting students) CODA, (children of Deaf Parents ) etc.. who learn ASL in the class like it a lot and it grows faster for the hearing community because they become more esthuisiast to learn sign language and Deaf culture.
Seth: When you go out for a walk? like go shopping in the mall or downtown. Does the public recognize you ?
Sean: Yeah, it happens frequently? the price it takes, I guess..Most important, I do not look at the fame side of it to myself? It is just related to my passion, make it good on the TV show to make the audience enjoy the show? to keep the rating high?so the show can continue. Sean continues: Therefore; Sean wanted to give the audience and production appreciation for his work. Sean is always greeted by the fans in the public and chat with them. They asked for taking pictures, etc? Sean is very pleased to meet fans and give them attention until they're satisfied? It is nice to see them cheerful and happy. It makes Sean inspired.
Seth: Now tell me about hearing fans. What is the difference between Deaf and hearing fans?
Sean: * laughing * Deaf fans are more hyperactity like bang on the floor, scream, excitement (It is part of the Deaf culture). I love you Sean, you are awesome, wave hands in the air? Sean feels a more ?warm welcomed? to the Deaf community. It was matching his real Deaf world. It makes him feel good about himself?
Seth: Switched at Birth ? Casts interact? Seth wonder, if casts relationship with Sean well? (English)
Sean: yes they do, worked with them everyday. ..Sean hang out with them at various events as part of the work too. Hearing casts are very friendly and warm.
His character line was more focus on twist into the hearing culture. When he have the more Deaf casts involve with his work, it makes him more inspire. He was so thrilled and able to chat with Deaf people at his workplace. He has an opportunity to use ASL more to chat with Deaf casts. Hearing casts are very friendly and want to learn ASL with the Deaf casts and Sean. Sean really enjoys working on SAB very much.
Seth: Why you want to narrow onto different path with the hearing cast ? Can you tell me more ? 7:13
Sean: Really writer's decision to make Emmett's storyline, a romantic love story. Between Bay and Emmett? My character goes once in a while to the Deaf culture. Deaf casts involved that show to make him more thrilled to work with.
Seth: Now tell me? 7:41 ? Wonder if SAB itself focus on hearing culture and forgot about Deaf culture and the two different ways? ? 7:51
Sean: (difficult to answer that question) ? Writer is the accountability to writing in the scripts to merge both of hearing and Deaf society and culture on the TV show.. focus on ASL language. Sean said, he has no power to control. It is up to the writer?
Seth: It's been many years, doo you feel that show will be continue running? 8:19
Sean: It is up to the rating until the fall season. It is depend on the audience. If the rating is not good then will cancel the show. Can?t predict ? it is up to the audience.
Seth: Are you watching that show or not ? 8:40
Sean: Good question ? When it was starting first season. I did watch show until 1, 2, and 4th. He does not watch it? He lost motivation to watch that show. 8:52 It was not because of not he is interested in that show? he feels ? his personal life needs to be separated from his character life? he does not bring my work career to his home. It makes him feel better to focus on his personal life. Not watch the TV show. He is glad that he back off from watching the show? 9:20
Seth: 9:26 ? some of these casts check on the rating. Why don't you if the rate goes well or down ? You do not know how much the rating goes up or down because you focus on your personal life. 9:32. You separate the focus between home and work. Are you sure that you don't follow the ratings on SAB TV show ? 9:39
Sean: Rating oh yeah? producers, writers, etc.. at work?. They do discuss about the ratings? up and down challenge with other shows on ABC Family?.
I meant my career life, it is always separated, I come home to be myself.
    17:24
Seth: Now ? What if the Switched at Birth show end, what will you do in your life?
Sean: Good Question... If SAB ends, his life will flow with the opportunity. Deaf roles are very small. There is not much out there for the Deaf performers. But?. He can only follow the path his life takes him. Life will guide him to the future.
Seth: You are still young. Aren?t you considering go to college ?
Sean: Nah - I think, college is out of my range. School is not my things? Homework do term paper deadline, etc? tell him what do? Bye? See you later?
    18:04
Seth: He emphasized Sean. Education is VERY important.
Sean: right...he encouraged high school children to finish their High School. Go to college is the best opportunity for them. He is in a risky career process? College is not his things?
    18:30
