Nothing drives home the disappointment from the prizing announcement as much as my 12 year old (a competitive card player who loves the Star Wars IP and this game) saying, “how can it be a participation prize if we don’t all get one?” He then had lots of logical questions, like “how do they decide who get the card? First people to sign up? First ones to show up? Top 64 results?” None of these are things players at this level of an event should have to ask.
My PQ has said during top cut there will be side events (more info to come) including, "half & half sealed (3 spark, 3 shadows); and shadows sealed using prerelease kits". As long as this is only for people who signed up for the PQ, not people who watch or then show up after top cut, and it is included also to say free or not requiring another purchase, then I would be fine with missing one of the 64 promos because I then get 6 packs, which some could be from spark, that would be okay in my book.
Really they could have done any number of cards. Maul, Wrecker, Boba fetts armor, Snoke, Kylo ren or Rey, the darksaber, the Mandalorian, Bo katan unit, etc. I dont think the cards they chose for the prizes were the correct choices, however they probably had these chosen before set 2 releases (giving them the benefit of the doubt). Hopefully set three promos will be good cards or at the least cool characters/story moments
Even if they were already printed. It cost the same to print a HSF common as a showcase. If the prizing has the backlash it has now, it’s better to spend the money to correct it with a card people give a shit about and gain the communities trust as opposed to a few bucks
I I agree. First off, there's a chance that not every player will receive e a participation promo?! Second, I really dislike the OP borders - they keep me from putting those cards in my decks. Third, I'm not excited about top 16 promos. Fourth, I'm not excited about playmats, and even though the art for the set is ok, I would expect some custom artwork on these bad boys at the very least. Initiative token is ok, but doesn't go far enough - why not put the set name on the token and chase one for each set? These prizes seem worse than set 1 showdown.
I was EXTREMELY underwhelmed with the Showdown prizing when announced. I gave it a pass because I assumed the PQ rewards would be insane. Instead we get a stinky mess. It kind of feels like a rug pull to announce all of this almost a month after selling out tickets to these events and we aren't even guaranteed a participation card.
I feel like since they did a Blue (Takedown) and Red (Mace Windu) card in set#1, they wanted to do a Green and Yellow card for this set so the "circle is now complete"
64 of the legal authority cards over 40 PQ's does come out to 2,560 (nice quick math sir). My thoughts as to why they aren't providing the full 128 for each PQ starts with how many cards are in a sheet, and therefore how many sheets would they need to print? Are there perfect slots or will some needed to be filled. Throw in 160 (40x4) judge promos, and 1,240 (40x31) Evazon cards, making the total cards needing to be printed 3,960. If we add the other 64 legal authority promos our total comes to 6,520. Using the Altered TCG Kickstarter page as a reference, they showed a sheet containing 100 (10x10) cards. So they would either print 40 sheets, missing 40 slots, or print 65 sheets and missing 80 slots. The cost of 25 more sheets can't be that much not to warrant only doing the 40 and not having enough of the legal authroity cards.
It’s hard not to look with envy at the prizing in Lorcana, where the top two in every store level event (with much smaller attendance thresholds) get a cool mat and the top 4 in the first few sets (and now top 8!) got an Enchanted rarity card, whose value well exceeds the prizing we see here. Pretty disappointing decisions here by the FFG team.
Same. I'm not paying forty in Indiana for a high roller chance to get a bye that I don't even know if I could attend. That'd be the only selling point since these promos suck and there isn't cash prize
Wow i actually have to give huge props to the Lorcana team that as a 1st time tcg launch they ran there events pretty well and ramp to spld.out 1000+ events. I would think this company would look at their success and take notes put to spit in the face of players on whether or not they get a PARTICIPATION card is absurdity. This will foster a distrust in the community and they will need to correct this sooner rather than later to avoid dropping of players
Within a couple days of their announcements and posting this video they have corrected several things and said moving forward that PQs will have much better prizing support.
I don't know why you would want "set Specific" cards for store showdowns when its near the end of the Cycle of the set... Also why a rare for a store showdown? The majority of conversations I had with poeple before the store showdown were hoping the could get top 8 and get a mace. Literally no one is talking about getting unrefusable offer.. Promos for special events like store showdowns should be an alternate art Legendary aka Ray or kylo or another iconic character from the set but one which isnt set Bound. The participation card Should be a generic card like they did in set one. Something like fell of the dragon which isnt Bound to the set.
My store in Germany shared some details about what FFG is giving additional in terms of pricing: 1 display box They were negotiating with Asmodee so they got some additional boxes, but only after like starting a revolution. The promos are real bad, not really looking forward to it, but at least my store made sure everyone gets one by cancelling the town hall they wanted to rent and doing the PQ inside the store with 80 participants... Top 16 will not get a participation promo but in this way everybody at least gets a card. How could that happen? There is no explanation from FFG with makes me really mad on how much money they already made out of this whilst being stumbling from one bad thing (like the colation issue in Set2) to another...
Great video, great points. You guys are taking a slightly higher road than me. I'm a bit more upset/disappointed. But as you said I hope they take this advice and implement change.
All I need to know is they weren’t announced well and sold out before the majority of us knew where to look to try to get a spot. And the excuse we get is “it’s season 0”. Love the game but this implementation of PQ was awful
What's the probability their company will actually take the consumer voice into serious consideration?? Should the swu player base be concerned and take this pq event as a sign from ffg that they could be repeating their failure(s) from past games?
@@AnimeHeroTCG hey there! They actually already posted on socials that they have heard the concerns and taking action to fix things, so fingers crossed 🤞🏻
The kicker for me on the participation promos is they went out of their way to say that everyone would get one on stream. At one point they said registering, showing up, and leaving would get you a promo. And yeah, maybe they misspoke, but chat had to drag the card count out of them later on, and they never corrected that statement or apologized for misspeaking. Felt like they were hiding it and misleading us, and the lack of acknowledgement of the math not working made it feel deliberate and malicious
Only giving out 64 cards when 128 people are showing up, I mean that is completely like wtf are you thinking. At minimum, you pay $40 and you live across the street from your PQ and you can walk, you still paid $40 to play some games. But everyone else will pay $40 + travel + food + lodging perhaps, obviously way more than $40 and they won't be guarenteed something for their efforts, even if they go 0-7. What possibly could be the reason they held back giving out 128 of those prizes? We all understand you need to actually play good to get top 16 prizes, forget what that prize is for a second. Did they leave stores on the hook to make up what everyone will get for participating, like a pack haha pay $40 to get a $6 pack of cards. This is silly.
Yugioh players cry because of their prizing, but they can feel better looking at this stuff. These prizings are just stupid. The convention stuff should have been prizing. Shame on ffg.

They utterly failed in this first attempt. Ill look forward to set 3 in the hopes that they'll rectify their errors here
Set 3 is probably already set with printing timing restrictions
