Inventing Warhammer | Rick Priestley in Conversation

- The creator of 40k and Warhammer Fantasy, Rick Priestley in conversation! Rick Priestley and his school friend Richard 'Hal' Halliwell created Warhammer Fantasy for Bryan Ansell at Citadel in 1983. After that Rick worked on 5 more editions of Fantasy, as well as Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, countless other games, and of course, also invented Warhammer 40,000.
With a lifetime of experience creating some of the greatest tabletop games in history it was my privilege to talk with Rick Priestley about how everything began, what it was like to work at Citadel and Games Workshop in the early days, and how things evolved.
Due to some technical issues with the video I have annotated several portions of our conversation with images from the archives - illustrating the games, people, and places that Rick describes in wonderful detail.
And if you want to see even more there is an extended version of my conversation with Rick available exclusively on my Patreon.

Great to see that you made a virtue of my dodgey camera Jordan - apologies to everyone for that - I enjoyed the spliced in material and thought it well chosen. If we do this again we'll have to try my ipad - well, it's mobile (unike my pc) and perhaps I can find a spot when the bright sunlight reflecting off my bonce doesn't blind everyone ;)
Rick it's an absolute pleasure to hear you in interviews. As a mere young'n of 41 who started on heroquest, battle masters , advanced heroquest then 5th edition lizardmen... thank you for your work. I also recently read your wargaming design book which was a fascinating insight
Never apologise, never explain
Thanks so much for doing these interviews, it’s incredibly appreciated
Thank you again Rick for being so generous with your time! I’m glad the annotations worked out, and no need to apologise at all - it was a real pleasure!
Love your work Rick
They say the virtue of a great interviewer is to listen, not talk - and I have to applaud you on an excellent interview. Magnificent to hear Rick Priestley talk of the early days. Thank you both!
Could you imagine if there was a regular podcast with Andy Chambers, Rick Priestley and co talking about old school Warhammer?
Forget the podcast, film them doing some gaming and talk over that :)
GW lawyers would find a way to shut that down so fast... But yeah, that would be amazing.
I think putting up photos of the products and the people Rick is talking about added a lot of context. Im sure it was a pain, but it leveled up your interview.
This is my favorite interview I've listened to so far! It's so valuable hearing real gaming history from one of the surviving pioneers.
I love this shiny man. When his head catches the light? I feel the Emperor's blessing.
Annotating the interview as you have done here is far better imo .
Best interview yet, I only hope Bryan Ansell watches this and that you can one day interview the man himself!
RIP :(
Your interviews are fabulous, you're a natural at this. Your videos are a great historical document to how Warhammer has grown and changed over the years, and I would thoroughly recommend others to look through your back catalogue of videos, which shows diligent research and unearths some great Easter eggs from over the years. Long may it continue.
Thanks so much! I’m hoping to keep doing this for as long as I can!
Just watched this and was super sad to hear of Bryans passing, a great loss to us all, and a wonderful interview Rick and Jordan, it's always lovely to hear the old "war" stories and how things originated
I could listen to this man for hours
always fascinating to hear stories and insights from the maestros themselves
Always a pleasure to listen to Rick and another great interview. Unlike many out there Jordan I like how you just nudge the conversation along and not revel in the sound of your own voice, great stuff!
This is one of the best new channels I’ve discovered. You and arbitor Ian bringing hobby content that is not only aimed at hyperactive zoomers. It’s hugely appreciated, hope you keep going!
Glad you’re enjoying it!
Brilliant, how it all evolved and has its roots firmly in our world is what resonates with me
I remember playing the monochrome cover, black and white typed rules back in the day - laser burn, challenger, firefly, WRG ancients, Warhammer 1st edition etc. Warhammer 3rd edition was the first wargame that really grabbed me and all my school friends at the same time.
Jordan, as always an incredibly fasinating interview with an absolute legend of the industry. I can still remember finding a two page set of rules for a sci-fi resource management game in an old trade magazine, or maybe a convention mag that had rick Priestley named as the author. Wish i still had it, i think it ranked up there with all his games workshop work, in my humbe opinion.
Bring on the brian ansell interview! You are the master achivist of our beloved hobby Jordan
Outstanding! Thanks for a great interview. Squeak-squeak! 🤩🐀🌠 🪄🐀
You're a legend for this, Jordan.
Orcs are not bad beings, they’re just misunderstood as they are just happy-go-lucky beings that just enjoy a playful game of extreme tag 💥😂💥😊
And once again thank you for being able to make these amazing interviews happen 😊❤😊
The combo of images and talking heads is perfect. I know its lots of work editing but really adds to the experience
This was the perfect companion to Snipe and Wib's video on Warhammer 1st edition yesterday.
I really enjoyed Snipe & Wib’s video, and if you’re still interested in even more Warhammer history then it pairs well with my Making of Warhammer Fantasy series: ua-cam.com/video/OveWpcWyx_c/v-deo.htmlsi=5XgHMBbrkap2BsdQ
Great conversation Rick and Jordan! Thanks for these videos
Excellent interview!
Great work getting him on! Will watch later, but just liking and commenting now for the algo.
Very nice to hear how they created the story of Warhammer and Rogue trader.
Thank you for bringing my childhood memories back to life with this, Gavin Thorpe and Andy Chambers who combined gave me such an expansive experience stimulating my childhood imagination 💭 thanks to themselves for inspiring me to want to create something that could be made possible on the tabletop gaming, dice rolling including the alarm at seemingly endless hours of rolling 1’s instead of enough 6’s and counting to hide my tears until I could get back to my pillow to secretly cry myself to sleep while pretending that I was feeling fine about it all, 2nd edition was so much fun 😂🎉😅 thanks for the memories ❤
I had almost forgotten about the fact I would have been a smelly teenager at the time, my poor parents were probably hoping for me to wash myself more often at the time and now I have my own teenage child I now know what they were complaining about 🤮 😢😅
He is the biggest legend of them all!
Agreed!
i seem to say this with every video you post 🙂So yes another amazing iinterview with a legend and its great to listen to the history of GW, brings back great memories, thank you
Great interview. Thank you.
Nice one Jordan, great interview, yes I agree with the other commentator 'How are you getting all these amazing interviews?'
This was wonderful and I think it’s thanks to your hard work, talent and positive persona that you’ve managed to convince so many luminaries of tabletop gaming to participate in interviews with you. You really do a thorough and professional job at this channel and deserve every success. Rick Priestley’s stories were so interesting; I’m glad he agreed to do it. :-D
Cheers Dan
You got the OG! Only a matter of time!
Jordan, the content on your channel is top draw. Fantastic stuff. Thanks man.
More great content thank you! The only missing pieces are Bryan and Jervis now :)
Great interview as ever! Would LOVE to see an artist focused series of these interviews. Interviewing the OG GW artists and getting their insight into their experiences and huge visual influences in GW's infancy. To me they are just as important as the folk behind the business & rules side of GW's legacy.
That's a great shout, and on my pad for the new year - I'm keen to hear more about the visual side of things too.
Amazing video as always.. these interviews are just what a lot of us are craving - gearing from our xhildhood idols and the grandfathers of ehat we love even today - so thank you so much 🙏
Not gonna lie, but i actually preferred the images being posted throught the video as it stopped it being a case of staring at faces for the entirety of the video.. i recommend doing it more often as helps gisiaulise what your both talking about
Thanks again and thank you Rick for giving me a fantastic childhood 🙏
Wow the annotations you added to this video must have been a colossal amount of work! really appreciate it! thanks so much!
Cheers Jay, glad they worked out!
Great stuff. Thanks Rick and thanks Jordan for this.
Putting the kettle on before sitting down to this one mate
Well done Jordan, thanks to Rick also...
Another brilliant interview!
Thank you, Roger
37:51 absolutely great you didn’t have better video. Spent a fair bit of time looking at the Linked-in profiles of some of these people and seeing what they went on to do.
Lovely stuff!
Cheers Tom
Jordan mate, YOU are legend
That's very nice of you to say!
Truly the G.O.A.T.
Would love to hear about his journey post GW. Maybe next time?
Legend
Great interview! Although Rick Priestley will need to up his game to impress Martha by the looks of it 😂
Another great video with a living legend! You're going to need some more people to retire from GW soon at the rate you're getting through them lol
How about a lustria stream ? Love to know what happened to the Amazons and pigmies. The lobotomised slave warriors of the slann etc, etc.
How much more does the Patreon interview have?
The Rick Priestley interview on Patreon has about 60 minutes extra (though it is not annotated like this version is unfortunately), and there is also an extended Gav Thorpe interview with ~45 minutes. I have also shared some interviews with Tuomas Pirinen, John Stallard, and Robin Dews there that haven't been published publicly at this time. Oh, and just to complete the hard sell, there's early access to some interviews too!
I can't hear it
Have a nice seep Martha!
Thanks for the video. Nigel Stillman might be nice at some point…just saying
My experience od gw mail order in late 80s was always terrible I think rogue trader took 7 weeks , i still have a copy of warhammer fantasy battle magic biik stamped "gift from troll" as apology for late delivery
John F. Kennedy Class Cruiser. Noice!
Funny though, Crowley was a dodgy guy but the underlying techniques are not false. Most people will never pursue it. So it remains occulted to the masses by default.
Notice how the rules writing went right out the window in later editions of 40k (9th and 10th specifically, and Kill Team for that matter). It's so needlessly wordy and obtuse at times. Rick, Jervis and Allessio are great writers who know how to craft a game!
I have ZERO respect for anyone from Games Workshop. They're all the same. When they were in power, they raked in the money, and when they are fired, they tell tragic stories about how they were oppressed and stifled their freedom of creativity.
Warhammer > GW.
Also for me the Old World and the Horus Heresy is NOT true Warhammer.
That's pretty juvenile.
What a lovely guy.
