The only person who can sing this song with absolute beauty and perfection! Never got to see him in concert, so these videos are awesome to get to see! Thanks for posting! ❤
Michael Crawford puts a whole new spin on this song ..... I loved Jesus Christ Superstar and I was hooked ... but Michael your voice is so hauntingly beautiful !!!
@AllOverAussie This was in 1998 at the Cerritos Center for performing Arts in the greater Los Angeles area. Wonderful concert and performer, he's a consummate artist.
Gethsemane was my least favourite JCSS song. I always found it a bit long winded and boring. That was until I heard Michael Crawford sing it. The emotion he wrung from every note is incredible and my goodness what a powerhouse to be able to sustain those long high notes. Absolutely amazing ❤
Wow. Until now I had no idea I wanted to hear Michael play Jesus. His version brings a whole new depth to this song. Maybe he was just meant to sing Webber's music.
+isablondethng I agree. People keep talking about how the role needs "a rock singer," but IMO the "rock" sound against the "rock" orchestration is just too much. To provide CONTRAST, what the role needs is a pure, "classical" sound like Michael's. Just my opinion.
Now I want to see Jesus Christ superstar, pity it’s not on stage anymore. He sings the song with so much intensity. I’m sure it’s better than the original. That voice with so much feelings and clarity.
I've loved it, the original cast album, since I was barely a teen. I must have been in my thirties at least when at last I got to see it on stage - WITH MURRAY HEAD!!! It was one of the best days of my life.
Yes, indeed. Maybe it's just me, you know? When one's ears are accustomed to such screamers as Ian Gillan and Ted Kneely singing their guts out on this piece, I guess one finds it hard to have it in such a different style.
Michael Crawford is such a powerful singer ! He has a magnificent voice ! However, I MUST protest to the person who wrote the words for this particular song ! NEVER would a faithful follower of Jesus, the Christ, the Messiah & a faithful follower of God’s Word - EVER - even begin to consider that Jesus would think about “talking” to God in such a demanding, disrespectful way !!! ALSO, NEVER would a faithful believer of God’s Holy Word EVER - even consider - that Jesus might have told God that He had NOT agreed & understood what the sacrificing of Himself would be ! A faithful child of God & a believer in His word KNOWS - CATEGORICALLY - that God, Jesus & the HolySpirit ARE ONE (the “Trinity). It follows - even just logically - that it would have been TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE for Jesus to have been - IN ANY WAY - confused about His destiny (to die on the cross) NOR would it have been impossible for Jesus to face the “truth” regarding His sacrifice - unknowingly ! In fact, I’ll go one step further and say : Any person who believes the words of this song to be TRUE, is guilty of “blasphemy” !!!
Sorry, but you have no soul. Jesus was afraid, wretched, persecuted, abandoned, his Mission here finished. His legacy and purpose was pure unconditional love. He came here to be one of us, to suffer like no other, as an example to us all. He taught us how to be, through his sermons, teaching, healing. Taken from Gethsemane, tortured, whipped, broken, tried before Pilot. To carry his own cross, then nailed to it, suffocated and speared. His spirit in transition to return home, whole again. It was finished. As Jesus said to Pilot. "Everything is fixed, and you Can't change it'. This is one of the most moving pieces you will ever hear. If you understand the message. Peace.
It's just showing that Jesus was still a man with feelings such as having doubts and being scared... I think this song gets the meaning of Jesus being the son of God but Also that he's a man as well.... Great song!
Mr. Crawford has a rarely beautiful voice, there's no question about that, but "Gethsemane" needs a ROCK singer, so... I'm afraid there's something lacking in this performance.
I know exactly what you mean, but I wouldn't go that far. It would fail as a ballad-like choral piece in the hands of a lesser singer. I almost think that only Michael Crawford could have pulled it off. Still, I have to say ... there will never be an experience to rival hearing the original cast recording. Ian Gillan gets right inside you and tears your guts out. EVERY TIME.
This man puts so much emotion into every note!!! That is a rarity for anybody in any profession. God Bless Him!!
He is Roman Catholic. And, of course, he is Irish. The one way the Irish differentiated themselves from the English was by being catholic.
@@jws1948ja being Catholic was also the reason that Irish people were discriminated against in England and America. I’m glad that has changed.
The way Michael uses his voice is incredible 😊 7:24
Michael Crawford you are a angel 😇 the way you can use your fantastic voice ❤️ 3:55
Michael is always brilliant!!! This is one of his ULTIMATE performances - no words can even describe it!!!

Wonderful rendition of this Song
What a voice!! I will never watch Frank Spencer in ''Some Mother's Do 'Av 'Em'' in the same way again.
I think of that man two thousand years ago, who said you must forgive seventy times seven.

Krystal, don't ever post your hopes on the unattainable. I did that with Barbara Eden when I was young.
Superb presentation of this masterpiece.
I love his version of this.
I remember when this concert was announced at the Cerritos Center. It was a VERY hard ticket to score.
Once in a generation performer.

Does anybody know the date of this performance?
Wonderful
of course, I also remember my mother, who said she had good intentions, so she did not have to be sorry for the harm she caused.

This channel is about Michael’s voice

Great song!
Wow....a good second ..... Ian Gillan first of course.
*more like Ted Neeley, actually (oops!)
Dearg Doom Crawford makes Ted Neeley sound like garbage.

He did this quite differently on stage for the show! The atmosphere would have been vastly different! He was the ORIGINAL JC on the stage!
