Lethal Weapon has gotta be my favourite LA cop film...but this one isn't far behind. I watched it a few nights ago for the first time and totally agree it's an easy 5/5 and Denzel deserved that Oscar but so did Hawke.

Yes! Hawke was fantastic! However, I am unaware of who else was nominated that year for Best Supporting Actor so I don't know his competition, but man this is a great movie!

Training Day is one of the greatest american crime thriller movies of all time. The story, performance's, action sequences, direction, screenplay, and cinematography was outstanding and incredible. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Detective Alonzo Harris and Officer Jake Hoyt as they both put tons of emotion and depth into their roles. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old.😍👍💯😎

The movie is consistently intense throughout. Well-deserved Oscar. Denzel’s Magnum Opus.
He could have killed Hoyt early on in the film. But he couldn’t bring himself to do it. When he was taunting Jake to shoot him at the end, and telling him that “he can’t do it”, he was actually talking about himself.

Simply put... This movie is a lesson about "making friends".
If you start watching it with this mindset
You'll find a whole different judgment.

How so? I'd like for you to elaborate on this

    • @tholfikarn
      @tholfikarn 4 роки тому

@@BrandoCritic you see Jake's ambition blinding him from reading the signs that tells him this "group" is no good.
And it will never be good, and that's what Roger tried to say when he ended the joke with "the f is your problem!?".
And this is the same thing that happens when good guys try to get a bad image by hanging with the bad ones,
They think that it's just an image and there's no further trades and compromises on who they are .
But Jake learns that's not the case for sure after killing Roger , this shows when he tells alonzo in the car "that guy was your" friend " and you killed him like a fly. "
And that's when he realizes the truth about the guys he's with.
I really advise to see the movie in the "making new friends" mindset,
So You'll be reading many hidden signs, and you'll be able to put yourself in Jake's shoes more effortlessly.

@@BrandoCritic but, forgive me for saying, that's a simplistic way of seeing it...
I guess you have to live and experience similar environments to understand the movie in a broader sense...
Because if you look at the backgrounds of the director, the writer and the main star... you'll know that this movie is more of a lesson than anything else.

    • @BrandoCritic

We like characters who are competent, characters that have agency and make choices versus characters that have choices thrust upon us. The writer of this movie also wrote the tax collector and harsh times. All three of these movies are written in the same universe, with similar themes. I recommend watching all three movies close together.

@ Brando. Great review. After reading the comments, I noticed one where someone commented that it was the goat performance to which you replied they should check out there will be blood. I don't believe either of them are the goats performances ever although I'd probably put them in my top 20. Anyway, I've always gone back and forth in my mind on who's the better actor since they're both from the same generation and came to the conclusion that they both have their strengths but I may have to give Denzel the edge. DDL pretty much only does oscar bait type movies and takes a role every 5 to 10 years to give the best performance possible (nothing wrong with that). Denzel goes back and forth and sometimes does garbage. Where I give him the edge is his ability to elevate bad material and make it respectable and his movies are rewatchable. DDL always gives great performances but I can't watch his movies over and over again. I'm curious to hear your take.

    • @BrandoCritic

I'm just interested in seeing good movies. I don't really put stock into actor's track records. Like for example, I'm not the biggest fan of Nicholas Cage, but I really enjoy him in The Croods. All I care about is if a movie is good. I'd rather watch a good movie with Rob Schneider and Pauly Shore than a bad movie with Denzel. Hope that makes sense
