    Gosh dawg!!
I hate it when people give reviews of this movie without reminding their audience of why Marine Corps boot camp was a living hell back in the mid through late 60's, because boots were needed on the ground in Vietnam.
In order to satisfy that need, Marine Corps boot camp was shortened from 12 to 8 weeks. A Marine D.I. had to instill 12 weeks of Marine Corps history into individuals who voluntary joined and individuals forcefully drafted against their will into service within 8 weeks.
That meant a Marine drill instructor had to quickly change (desensitizing) the mindset of mostly young teenage thinking adults and turning them into fearless combat warriors (killing machines, not Killers! a big difference) because of where the recruits were heading.
After boot camp, Marines were shipped off to jungle warfare training that lasted maybe 1 to 2 weeks and then were shipped off to Vietnam all within a 3 to 4 months from stepping off the bus at the two Marine Corps recruit depot.
All this happen, because a democratic president went against his word by sending "American boys to fight another mans war". 🤣 thus leading to the draft. Your welcome! 🤣🤣

The military was definitely different then, you had a war with basically no public support, a draft, a loose set of rules for drill instructors, a good chance of dying upon completing training, and after ALL that, when you get back home from your PTSD run people scream at you that you are a monster, but now we have enlistment again, so it's freedom of choice.

Joker is just being a smartass when it comes to the born to kill. Everybody is a comedian in combat. It's a coping mechanism. The worse things are, the more you want to make light of the situation.
Example. When Cowboy takes that fatal shot, one of the marines said in frustration, "You got to be shitting me!"
Cowboy's response knowing he's about to die, "I wouldn't shit you, you're my favorite turd."
Let me address morality during combat. When in combat, you think you're going to die. These kids are young and a lot of these guys are virgins. They don't want to die virgins so they pay whores to lose their virginity. It's a military tradition.
Otherwise, I like the your review. To me it's the closest movie to bootcamp/basic training. I'm glad you gave it a 5. A lot of people just don't get the movie.

    • @BrandoCritic
      @BrandoCritic  3 роки тому +1

Thanks man! I appreciate that. I'm not trying to shit on marines or the military at all (some people seem to think so), I am just stating what is portrayed in the movie. My grandmothers brother was in the British navy during World War II and he said his best time was when he was stationed in the South Pacific (Vietnam, Phillipines, etc.) because he said (in a very strong Irish accent), "Down there, there ain't no 10 commandments" Laughed so hard!

This movie is brilliant on so many levels. Most people note how FMJ is like two different movies in one but that's the point Kubrick was going for. As a veteran it was easy to see how he showed the somewhat faster paced and structured first portion as being indicative of the indoctrination in basic training. Hartman's frenetic energy keeps you engaged as the scenes quickly cycle through the progress being made in the relatively safe and structured environment. You're so engrossed and never given a moment to truly reflect too much on what's happening until you're blinded by how events turn out because the process worked on you as well.
Later on in Vietnam the pace slows and structure disappears as the film becomes really uncomfortable interspersed with flashes of intense emotion or combat. That too shows how the stereotypical depiction of war is incorrect, where there is no structure or pace. Just long, drawn out gaps between action that are filled with increasingly morbid behavior as you adapt to your situation. That ties into scene with the Born To Kill on the helmet and the peace sign on the vest. It's meant to show the duality and contrast of humans: In our hearts we want peace but our minds are prepared for war. Even that senior officer that chastises Joker understood the conflict between the two and how neither one can really co-exist despite what we tell ourselves. You're either committed to one or the other, and in a warzone it better be war or you're going to be dead.
And the final scenes are so damn powerful. Focusing on Joker's face as he executes the female sniper was pure genius. You see all of his emotions play out. He thinks he's doing the right thing only to realize how much more difficult the concept of mercy was in practice as opposed to theory. Afterwards he receives praise from his fellow Marines as the realization of what he's done and become hits him. His anguish and ultimately the final loss of his innocence is meant to be an irony to his earlier disgust over the chopper gunner who was indiscriminately shooting women and children. He finally got his first 'real' kill and it was a woman.
Ending on that wide shot of the Marines singing the Mickey Mouse Club theme as they march through a burning city they liberated was absolutely brilliant and has two layered meanings. The first is more obvious and tied to the previous scene, an extension of the loss of innocence in a hellish landscape as these young men, most only a handful of years removed from childhood, are grasping onto something pure from that childhood as an anchor for their psyches. The second is a bit controversial and meant to be contrasted with that yearning for lost innocence and it's potentially sinister implications. It represents the idea that the premise of the Vietnam War was insanity because these Marines liberated this town in the name of democracy and US global power, represented as something so innocent and American as the Mickey Mouse Club theme was for these young Marines, but the dark reality of that liberation and democracy is the hellish landscape of a city that has been leveled into burning ruins that no one could inhabit.
This is undoubtedly a very political movie but it's done in such a way that really pays respect to the institutions of the military while presenting a very poignant message on war without explicitly spelling it out so that viewers don't feel like they're being preached to. Kubrick by taking away the sanitized idealism of war and presenting it with methods that manipulated and amplified the disorienting and uncomfortable feelings he knew viewers would have.

One of my favourite Kubrick films. This film is brilliantly constructed, acidically intense, and darkly humorous. Although this film might not boast the most original themes, Kubrick's visual style and innovative use of dialogue are the reason that this incredible film still holds up to this day. I give this film an 8.9/10. Happy that you liked this one Brandon. You should watch Platoon, Hamburger Hill, and Apocalypse Now. On a few other FMJ youtube videos I've seen people say that this film inspired them to join the military. ?!?!?! This is a film I'd show someone to dissuade them from joining the military.

People have said that in this comments section too. I don't get it, but hey, to each their own...

@@BrandoCritic I almost joined the navy on an impulse in my early 20s. I was still living with my parents, attending community college with random classes, it didn't seem like my life was going anywhere, and the place I did my laundry was next to a recruiting station so when they invited me in I talked to them out of boredom.
I spoke to each of the four branches and the navy was the only one that seemed maybe ok. The pitch was exactly the opposite of this film - basic is NBD except for the bit at the end where you have to take your mask off in tear gas, you probably won't see anything bad, and you if you find something morally objectionable you can opt-out. I was saved from joining by the fact that I had to do extra paperwork for my ADHD and I came to my senses in the process.
A few months later Sept 11 happened and the army folks rang me up to find out if I wanted to join after all and I was like, 'Are you crazy?! I'm even more glad I didn't join. I do not trust Bush to handle this well.' Sometime later I saw FMJ and again was glad I hadn't joined.

You got it all wrong. You're not very good at this. Find a new hobby.

Your take on soldiers is dead wrong, we were not stripped of our humanity or morality, we were stripped of our civilian identity and trained as soldiers. Soldiers are bound by laws and the Geneva Convention, and they regularly help civilians and war prisoners, watch "The Anderson Platoon" Marc Levy cut. I went through boot camp before going to Vietnam and drill sergeants were not allowed to hit trainees and racist statements were taboo and NEVER heard, there was very little obscenity and our trainers were WW2 and Korean War vets and for the most part we respected them and even admired them.

Like I said “in the video”, this is not what I think, it’s what the movie brings forward. I’m sure you’re a great soldier and I’m not insulting you. I’m simply talking about the movie
