It is fairly easy. You have to prep your canvas before starting. Lay down base colors so that when you pull up the white you get the beam effect. Have a light hand while pulling up. It makes the white mix with the base colors as you pull.
I’ve learned recently to put a black oil paint and linseed oil mixture on the whole canvas. It helps tremendously with blending the paint all over the canvas!! Maybe try this??

Hi, I'm professional painter and teacher. No, it doesn't have to be a very large brush, but it will be much easier and go faster, with fewer errors, the bigger your brushes are. If you have a tiny brush, maybe just use a tiny canvas the first time while you get used to the technique.
I take it you have to wait till the background paint partially dries and then add the white lines and brush up with a wet brush so it doesn’t mix and ruin the aurora effect
Hi, I'm a professional painter, and I've led a similar painting in acrylic as a paint party. Yes you can. But in that case, the background is dry, so you end up with drybrushed upward white light strokes, which leaves a bit more brush texture than the smoothness oil gives. And it's really cool looking though. Then you glaze on a layer of whatever colors you would like your lights to be. OR if you know how to work phenomenally fast, or have some kind of retarding medium to increase open time, you can get something similar to this oil technique. Another possibility might be using open acrylics, which stay wet and sticky for a really long time. Best wishes.
Stunning! BUT ...somehow like a magic show: you see the quick movement of the hand and the result, but with *no real idea of how to obtain that result*

To make the Aurora u have to paint it sideways (horizontal)

Does it have to be a large brush for the desired effect for this technique?

You got a slower version of this video?
All'inizio il colore è solo bianco o mischiato ad altri ?
What are the colors needed? Pls answer me I need to use this on contest
I just saw the painter's comment below, that said Viridian, magenta, dark purple. Best wishes.
Also, and another place she said she used Prussian Blue. Or phthalo blue would have a very similar effect in my experience.
Can I attempt this with gouache?

Do you do this dry or wet
Hi, I'm a professional painter and teacher. This appears to be loyal paint, and is done while the underneath darker colors are still wet.
I still try to figure out if the base has to be "wet" to do this. I see a ton of these videos but I still don't know
Je me demande la même question…
Si je le découvre, je vous le ferai savoir
Can you show us the background also please
