  • Located on the edge of a dense 20,000-hectare forest and explored by more than 10 million visitors every year, the Château of Fontainebleau is one of the most imposing palaces in France. With its Renaissance gallery, built 150 years before the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, its huge formal garden and canal over a kilometer long, Fontainebleau is the only residence that has been home to all the dynasties of France.
How did this “house of centuries” as Napoleon called it, come into being? What construction feats were achieved by its builders to showcase the power of the crown?
Documentary: FONTAINEBLEAU, BUILDING A ROYAL PALACE

It was built as a castle but converted to a palace overtime. It’s shown in an animation in the video.

More Authentic (1) French History and (2) "Basque Country"* History would be so appreciated. Theres an abundance of British History, and being an American, USA, of Irish/Basque lineage, + having a History Degree, these subjects are of value to me and could expand my understanding.
    Thanks,

It’s pronounced Fon-ten-blow. The narrator is correct. Think of the word “beau” and how that is pronounced.

I wonder was there any Irish connections to this castle, such as Irishmen fighting in French Armies or Irishmen seeking support from the Kings of France in thier rebellions against the English in Ireland, such as in 1798

Hey, Michael ! I can't help you with your question about connections with Irish and Fontainebleau, but many Irish men and soldiers settled in France at the end of the XVII° century - as you know, we had an important Irish brigade in the French army that included : régiment de Mountcash, régiment d'O'Brien, régiment de Dillon (Arthur Dillon was the most famous), régiment de Berwick, etc, etc. Not mentioning that an other Irishman gave us one of the most famous cognac in France : Hennessy (Richard Hennessy, from Cork, who came in Cognac in 1745 and started his business !). Following the few elements I found, those Irishmen were mainly located in west France - except for the officers such as Dillon, whose family gave France ones of the Army's greatest superior officers, and who probably lived close to Versailles or in Paris.
Nowadays, the French 92nd regiment of Infantry is still named "Royal Irlandais".

Thanks for filling in the details of this courageous investigation. Having spent a horrendous four months a virtual prisoner in a so-called rehab facility near Hartfotd CT, following surgery, I can attest that the situation there is comparable to what Nellie described -- so bad, in fact that I kept a secret diary, in which I documented each day's indifference, neglect, and abuse. And to add insult to injury, they presumed to charge over $350 per day for their abuse and non-care -- AND THE GOVERNMENT AND INSURANCE CO LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT !!!!!!!

An immense palace built and expanded to inflate the egos of several kings, enriching those who carried out the construction and expansion works. A magnificent symbol erected to shelter the luxurious life of some and show to the world all the contempt that the nobility and royalty devoted to the French people, whose overwhelming majority were made up of miserable, hungry, ignorant and illiterate subjects.
