    Question on using radiant barrier blankets. Shiny reflective stuff towards the heat or facing away from it?

      From what I know reflective side faces toward the inside of an attic, room or warehouse. I hope that helps.

    Safety tip: people should always wear breathing mask when cutting with a saw. Most types of dust are not good for the lungs.

      I would add a full-face mask, as well.

    Thanks for the video. Very helpful. What type of company would be best / most willing to install a gable vent: general contractor, handyman, siding, construction co?

    What caulking was used?

    Do you use these gable vents for the side of houses and the soffit vents for underneath the lips of houses or can you use those on the side of houses too? I would think water would probably get in the soffit ones though right?

    • @SkeltonandCo
      @SkeltonandCo  6 років тому

      You don't want to put soffit or under eve vents where a gable vent should be and vice versa. Gable vents are designed with louvers to keep rain from entering your attic. Soffit and under eve vents are protected from rain by an overhang so louvers are not required. Also, gable vents for retrofit jobs have a flange designed to fit against a homes exterior and, with caulking, seal to it. Try looking up the different types of vents in Google Images to get a better understanding. You can even go to the big-box store websites for down-loadable instructions for each different type of attic vent. I recommend contacting a qualified contractor to handle the job.

    How do these prevent cold air from coming in? We rent a house that is freezing in the winter time because it is like having two open windows in 10 degree weather. They seem very old like there used to be some crank handle on the inside windows that would open and close something on the vents but those are broken so no way to close them.

    • @SkeltonandCo
      @SkeltonandCo  5 років тому +2

      If your gable vents are designed to close but stuck, they likely need to be oiled from inside the attic and manually closed. If they won’t close, you can still prevent air from circulating through these vents by simply taping plastic sheeting over the back of the vents from inside the attic. The barrier between the house and the attic is your insulation. If your insulation is not adequate then the weather from the attic will bleed through especially in extreme conditions. Even with closed vents. Best of luck to you!

      @@SkeltonandCo Won't sealing off the vents create a moisture problem?

    • @ULINEgo
      @ULINEgo 4 місяці тому

      no- they are VENTS- They ADD ventilation, and thus, reduce moisture retention in permeable surfaces- though the metal and vent angle keep moisture out anyway.@jeffgalef121

    Holding the camera with one hand, while screwing with the other, on a ladder.
    If that isn't the makings of a how-not-to safety video, I don't know what is!
