Domo Branch: The Simple and the Complex
As part of this series, we have witnessed many orchestral moments where the drums became an 'ensemble' and sounded complex textures. But where is the simplicity of drumming? Domo Branch introduces them to stephan's basement and shows: playing drums, that means to set beat after beat. This shows how "difficult" in musical matters the simple is: it is subject to close observation - when even the untrained ear hears the details, every uncertainty comes to light.
As a storyteller, Domo Branch shows with a sophisticated stop and go how it is possible to develop a singing complexity out of simple elements. This path leads through detail, phrasing and variation. Because Branch's phrasing is so easy to follow through, a second aspect comes into play: independence, the ability to let one hand do something while the other plays counter figures to it. Branch does this as if he were sitting at a mixing board, fading various tracks in and out. Thus, in precisely measured sections, one can follow how independence leads to the great freedom to combine things and build something complex out of simple components, a wide-ranging narrative landscape of sounds in which every detail counts. Domo Branch führt sie in stephan’s basement ein und zeigt: Schlagzeugspielen, das heisst, Beat nach Beat zu setzen. Dabei zeigt sich, wie »schwierig« in musikalischen Belangen das Einfache ist: Es unterliegt der eingehenden Betrachtung - wenn auch das ungeübte Ohr die Einzelheiten hört, kommt jede Unsicherheit an den Tag.
Als Geschichtenerzähler zeigt Domo Branch mit einem ausgefeilten Stop and go, wie es möglich ist, aus schlichten Elementen heraus eine singende Komplexität zu entwickeln. Dieser Weg führt über das Detail, die Phrasierung und die Variation. Weil Branchs Phrasen so gut durchhörbar sind, kommt ein zweiter Aspekt zum Tragen: Unabhängigkeit, also die Fähigkeit, eine Hand etwas tun zu lassen, während die andere Gegenfiguren dazu spielt. Branch tut dies, als sitze er an einem Mischpult und fade verschiedene Spuren ein und aus. So ist in präzis bemessenen Sections zu verfolgen, wie Unabhängigkeit zu der grossen Freiheit führt, Dinge miteinander zu kombinieren und aus einfachen Bestandteilen etwas Komplexes zu bauen, eine weitgespannte erzählerische Landschaft der Klänge, in der jede Einzelheit zählt. Beat für Beat.
