This song is about Eugene Shoemaker. Here is his story.
Eugene Shoemaker was a geologist and a founder of modern planetary science. He studied craters on Earth and Moon, and realized that they were created by asteroid impacts. Shoemaker was the geology principal investigator for Apollo missions, and he also helped to train the Apollo astronauts that went to the Moon. He himself was a candidate for an Apollo Moon flight but was disqualified after being diagnosed with Addison's disease. Later in life, he said, "Not going to the Moon and banging on it with my own hammer has been the biggest disappointment in life."
Shoemaker spent much of his later years searching for undiscovered impact craters around the world. He died on July 18, 1997, in a car accident in Australia, where he was studying craters.
In 1999, as a recognition for his scientific accomplishments, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon by the Lunar Prospector space probe. His final resting place is close to the lunar south pole, in the Shoemaker crater, named after him.
The Shoemaker's urn was inscribed with a quotation from Romeo and Juliet reading:
    "And, when he shall die
Take him and cut him out in little stars
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun."
He is the only human buried on celestial body other than Earth. After his death, he finally got to go where he always wanted to be.

G Go From what I’ve heard he said it on a Finnish radio interview recently. Evidently he’s struggling to find good placement of the song live, and how it would translate to the crowds energy-wise. Basically he doubts whether it would flow well in a concert set list due to its unique song structure. But... he’s got plenty of time to rethink this now. And I have a feeling, based on people’s reaction to the song, that’s something he might be doing. lol

My father also had a huge passion for it and showed me a documentary about the discovery of the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. I was so fascinated by the footage of it breaking up and impacting Jupiter. My father passed away only five years after Shoemaker did when I was only 13. This song will forever remind me of the love of space that he passed on to me.

This must be the millionth time I have listened to this masterpiece and kinda felt the need to share something with you.
My sister passed away last Deceber 22nd. Saying she was everything to me is the minimum I can say to accurately convey what she truly was to me. By losing her, I also lost all hope and will to go on. For weeks after her passing, I simply felt as days went by without actually living. I couldn`t even cry anyomre. Few weeks later, Nightwish released their new album and, being my favorite band since I`m 15, I felt joy for the first time in months. But... when I listened to this (and How`s the heart?), the last part, the gorgeous operatic part, it immediately made me think of my sister. You`ll see... the phrase "laudato si" was first seen or known in a poem written by St. Francis of Asis (considered by many as the first poem ever written in Italian) in which he expressed his gratitude to God for everything around him, even pain and death. St. Francis is my personal favorite Catholic saint, Floor is my favorite singer, and Nightwish my unmatched favorite band, then... all of this together reduced me into a weeping mess as, while listening to the last part, I also silently praised the stars, God and my sister for everything, even the pain. Nightwish made me cry again, made me feel again, and, in a way, it also made me believe again.
So, thank you, once again, for being the "vehicle of spirit" the brought my soul back from a pitch black place. And even though I am not yet fine, and probably won`t ever be, at least I have a gorgeous soundtrack to help me and push me through it all.

Everyone: My favourite song ends with the typical melodic chours x 2, what about yours?
Me: Well let's see..there is a Dutch kick-ass singer who sings an opera part in latin, that ends a song that has basically no chours, and all it's written by a finnish genius.
      Everyone: Ahahahahaha no seriuosly Dude..
      Me: I'm seious.
Everyone: And that stuff works great?

I'm in my late 50s, and have been a heavy metal fan since high school. What excited me the most, though, were those few times where a band brought in the orchestral sound. I first saw this with the Scorpions when they did "Still Loving You" with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The combination of metal and orchestra was breathtaking for me. Most recently I have seen this with Heart's live cover (Kennedy Center Tribute) of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." They did an incredible job with the orchestral and choirs.
And then four days ago I came across a band I have never heard of before--Nightwish. I was watching a reaction video to "Ghost Love Score" from Wacken and I can say without doubt it is my favorite metal song of all time. Not only did it have the perfect blend of orchestral and metal, but the vocals sealed the deal. To me metal is not just about energy, energy, energy. It's about aggressive conviction with reflection and tenderness. That's what Floor was for me in Ghost Love Score. Most of the song is not her belting it out. But rather the soothing, calm, majestic lower registers (I love the minor keys). That song epitomizes that ultimate sound for me. I've heard this style described as "symphonic metal."
Next came the Shoemaker. I have only listened to it twice (I have listened to the entire album twice.) It's very different than Ghost Love Score. More than anything else Shoemaker/Human Nature to me is about drama--a play, an opera, a ballet, a Broadway musical. You see dramas in theaters. It seems to me that "theatrical" is the core of this album. Metal is still there, but plays a supporting role. This isn't symphonic metal...
    ...It's "Metal Theater."

This song is literally a star of the album. It has the right balance of heaviness and emotions to it. I love how the soft duet sounds like it is so intimate and full of emotions. I love the aggression in the middle of the song and the chorus just before the beautifully narrated quotation from Shakespeare by Johanna. Not to mention the beautiful moments with Floor's beautiful operatic voices takes over the show and the choir joined to bring it to the whole new level before it ends in an epic. If anyone actually read about what this song about Eugene Shoemaker it will make a lot more sense with the raw emotions this song established. I have goosebumps. I'm similar, I don't really like opera. I like the way opera is sang, the way they vocalise, but I rarely like the melodies. For me, Nightwas was the dream combination of sounds I like, orchestras, choirs, opera vocals and rock melodies.

As a high school science teacher, I am very happy that Tuomas and the gang have introduced me (and my students) to the work of one of the more modern scientists. Now that we are back in school (here in Québec), I have shown the video to my students within a class context. Nightwish's interest with science, since TGOE is quite special. This is quite a song. Thanks to all the group!

Tuomas has keen interest in marine biology, Floor has studied biology, and Marko is obsessed with stars and astronomy. Trust them to deliver this epic ride. (TGOE included)

Months after the release, I simply cannot let go of this masterpiece. This is probably the most "oceanborney" Nightwish song since Oceanborn itself. Like a love child of Gethsemane and Passion and the Opera, evoking both, repeating neither and adding so much more. Thank you Nightwish and thank you Floor - as someone who appreciated your early work with After Forever, I never had any doubts about your abilities in the first place, but you still surpassed all of my expectations with this album.
