Thanks so much John. It's very satisfying reading this. With a bit more experience you'll see yourself doing things you might have thought impossible short before. Kiss and thanks again.
woooow i am impressed! I've been trying out this program for the past few days and I never would have known about these cool features without this video. The snapshots, assets, and the masking and clipping features were especially useful. Thanks!
You are an outstanding instructor. Your commentary, visuals and speed at which you present the instruction is unsurpassed by many who teach on this or other platforms, including Skillshare. I clearly am not "self-taught" through the "trial and error" process. I learn through Observation/Application; if I cannot follow along at the speed at which some tutorials are recorded, they are not very educational if I find myself still wondering How/Why something was done. Thank You Isabel for these great tutorials!
I think the way that you learned how to do it makes you a great teacher on the subject. I am definitely gaining more value in your videos than most of the other ones on Affinity.
Thanks Robert. I am very glad to read so. I've been very many years working with vectors and as of today, I decided Affinity Designer is the one I prefer by far for several reasons. However, the beauty of this, is not just learning this particular software, but being able to understand it inside out, learning techniques, and therefore feel pretty much ready to grasp and use any other software just as good, in little or at least much shorter time.
Yes, exactly! I want to learn as much as I can on the subject. And I know what you mean. When I was learning how to build my Wordpress websites on UA-cam I didn't realize how much it was going to help me grasp and learn other skills online. Now that I have a few skills under my belt, I think it's time to learn Affinity. I need too much vector work done not to learn it. :)
Very Clear explanations, I had to subscribed. Thank you for sharing this video and the others too based on Affinity Designer, your content is excellent! I can see this channel growing fast, very great information!
9:37 Look at the very bottom of the menu, “find layers in panel” :) Other than that, good! What I find most useful is cmd/ctrl+alt V to copy paste to inside shapes.
Really, I explained this bad. Other than not seeing the option in the right click menu, maybe cause I had the option in the UI preferences "scroll to reveal layers in panel" turned off, which made it "clear" to me this option was not available at all, who knows, I think I should have put a better visual example to show what I really wanted to explain, which is my preferred workflow, where I don't move objects up or down in the layers panel to stack them in a particular order while working, nor I use the arrange tools much, but most likely cut an object to the clipboard, click the second object in the canvas, and then paste from clipborad to have them together in a consecutive order now. Not sure I am even being clear now or even worse lol... haha.. probably the second!! Anyways, well noted Discordian Times! Thanks
Great job ! Learned things. There is one explanation missing though when you apply Boolean operations : how do you copy the style ? (Stroke & fill from an object to another).
Hi Cédric. To copy attributes, simply Cmd+C from the object you want to take the style from and then Cmd+Shift+V on the object you want to apply them to. Cheers.
Hi Gregg. You simply need to click ALT while applying any of the boolean operations. You will see the new layer is a compound layer, containing the 2 shapes.
Great tutorial, thanks! I have a question about snapshots when using artboards... do you know of a way to snap only one artboard instead of the whole document?
Hi Danitra - I dont' think this is possible unless you save a given artboard as a snapshot on its own, deleting the rest. But this is just a workaround. Thanks for the comment.
thanks, your tutos are very clear and precise , your are a very good teacher . and i undestand your english ( im french) 😉 PS: when i export a project (for example) in PNG format ,the lines are pixelated when I zoom in on the image. my project in 1920x1080p and try higher value but always the same probleme . I do not understand the interest of vectorization if the result is pixelated. I only used tools like the pen or the vector brush thanks for advance
Hello WhoIsCoty - I don’t think I can give you a quick answer to your question with the information I have. It all depends on several things, like how you created the image, the palette, if it has gradients, solid colours, etc. and also what you want the image for, if you need it as png, or if a jpg would work for you, or maybe even other vector formats as SVG. It is really not a question that has one answer. Also have in mind that when exporting vectors into bitmaps you will always loose a bit of quality as vector is a resolution independent format but raster images are composed of pixels and will always be affected by pixel limitations.
Hi WhoIsCoty. Well, I don't really know what might be the problem you're experiencing, so it's hard to say if anything I tell you will make it better. As a rule of thumb, the default settings should be good. If you didn't touch the quality (so it's up to 100 in the export panel) you shouldn't be experiencing many real problems. But really I can't say much like this, cause don't really know what's your issue. Sorry I can't be of more help here.
WhoIsCoty - I found the default settings gave quite a 'ragged' look to text when exported to Illustrator EPS format. Turned off the 'rasterize' option and it exported everything (including text) text as sharp, scalable vectors. If you need sharp, clear bitmaps, choose high resolution and high quality. Lots of options to play with - experimentation is the best way I've found. Great way to learn too. :)
Hello Javier - In AD you have the possibility of rasterising 2 objects by selecting them> right click> rasterise. If what you want is to keep them as vectors, you can use the Operations. To merge two objects into one, use the "Add" operation. Hope this answers your question. Kiss.
Hi Miguel. No, but you're not the only one asking, so maybe you'd like to read here, in case the Windows trick helps you out. Cheers! forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/19690-larger-font-and-tool-icon-size/
Hi. Many thanks for an interesting and clear tutorial. Could you just clarify for me though: at 18.17 you say "click A" . What do you mean by that, please, 'cause I've tried all sorts of A clicking and I can't get the red spot that you refer to, so I'm unable to tweak the shape.
Hi David! Thanks for your comment. Notice how in the example I first have the Move tool (V) active, to first select the shape. Once you have the shape selected, when you click "A" you activate de Node tool (A) and it will allow for you to see the red dots to tweak the shape. Hope this clarifies. Don't hesitate asking me any more doubts should you have them.
Personally, I hope not. It really adds bloat. Photoshop 3D was a bust. Have you tried Sketchup Free or Sketchup Make (also free). They are the most intuitive tools on any platform for 3D. Exporting in EPS or PDF brings the files in as editable curves based on Sketchup Surfaces, Exporting from SU in PNG brings in bitmaps. 3D is a whole world unto itself. It would pull devs away from adding polish to AD and AP. Good Luck...
Besos.
It's a great feature and most people don't know yet it's there. Over the days of FINAL3.psd, FinalTestgoodversion.psd, versiongoodfinalForgood4.psd... hhhh
Hey I have a question. I'm trying to combine letters together. But what I want to do is. The lines that intersect I want them both to show. How can I do that. Example would be. I have 2 S's and I flip one horizontal and pulled them apart a little but I want the lines that intersect to show in both letters. I have an outline on both different colors but don't know how to make them show in the middle. Can you help ??
Hi BENNGIIE. Probably there's more than one way to do this. What I can think now would be something like this: Duplicate both letters exactly in the position you have them overlapping. Apply an "intersect" boolean operation to them. What is left after the operation has been applied are the outlines corresponding to the intersection of both letters ( you will need now to input your values to get to see it in on your canvas when not selected). Overlap the intersected lines over your original pair of letters aligning them correctly. Hope I made it clear and it helps.
Very well explained. However, I should point out that you seemed to have mixed up clipping and masking. Clipping is what you showed for masking, and masking is what you showed for clipping.
Thanks for pointing out, I hadn't realised my mistake. There's a spark of lucidity though at a given moment when I am "masking" but I say I'm clipping hahah. Sorry I just didn't realise I got it wrong here. I left a pinned note at the beginning of comments now to amend it somehow. Thanks again.
Sure thing. They are both pretty similar. Just remember when you add a mask, a new thumbnail will be created on the layer showing either a mask or crop icon.
Oh, but I have more under my belt. I can also pretend I'm French speaking Spanish, Italian speaking English, Portuguese speaking Italian and German speaking anything that is not German.
