I bought a 52-1 at a LGS yesterday. This is the only one I have seen offered for sale at a show in the two years I've looked for one. The 1st Gen S&W pistols don't turn up for sale very often at these gun shows, especially this model . When I glanced down at the table and saw that star shaped barrel bushing, I thought "There's no way I'm looking at a Model 52 laying in front of me!" I honestly can't believe nobody else beat me to it.
@@SuperStarASAR Did yours get past quality control with metal burrs on the inside machined surfaces of the slide too? I recently handled one of these and it was beautiful, but I have never seen such a sloppy machining job on any gun. HiPoint would be embarrassed.
Great specimen! My mom was an NRA bullseye pistol marksman / Team USA member in colorado Springs leading up to the 1980 summer games - she employed the Model 52 with very few modifications (namely custom African rosewood target grips) and still trains with that gun today.
I had the joy of shooting one of these beauties close to 40 years ago and still today it has left a wonderful memory. It was and still is hands down the most comfortable pistol I have ever fired and incredibly accurate. A fine pice of work for sure.
Nice table-top review. The Model 52 is a beautiful and very accurate pistol that was very competitive against the Colt National Match 1911, but the Smith isn’t a 1911 - pivoting trigger, slide-mounted safety, no grip safety. I’ve been lusting after a 52-2, but nice ones are priced out of my league, and the mags are REALLY expensive. Too bad you didn’t get to do a range review on it.
Absolutely beautiful gun, and very rare on this side of the pond. Couple of years back there was one for sale in my local gunstore. Low mileage, pristine condition. So I went out with the intention of buying it. At the counter the gunstore employee asked “who can I help?” Since there was another gentleman next to me. I was last so I pointed out the other gentleman was first. You guessed it...he snagged the 52 right from under my eyes....😢 True story.
Oh no! It is spectacular. I have a friend that handloads the wadcutters for it with a very light load for target practice. The pistol has a zero recoil with that. It’s amazing. Thank you for watching.
I was not aware of these and love these metallic frame smiths. This is a unicorn.. That blueing is something else, i really enjoyed the knowledge and show.
In the late 1970’s or early ’80’s, a friend of mine brought his model 52 to the range and said I could shoot it if I wanted to. It had a 5 round, wad cutter, magazine. I loaded it a fired the 5 shots at 50 feet. All 5 holes were touching in a 3/4 inch group. I gave him back his gun and left the booth. I knew it wouldn’t be better than that.
Great video about an interesting and special pistol. Furthermore I want to tell you, that your voice is clear and converient to understand for non-native english speakers.
I just inherited a 52-2 from an uncle that passed away. I’m not sure of the year of production but the serial has a 8987 after TAU. It’s in great shape but there less polished material like the safety lever has a matte finished. I’m curious about one thin you mentioned the screw that controlled the single action/double action not been found on models besides the 52 but I seem to see a screw with a very flat head and what seems to be a possible allen wrench hole in the center inside the frame liked you showed so I’m confused on this matter. Thanks for the information on this gun, I had not seen one until a week ago.
First of all I’m sorry about your uncle’s passing and congratulations on inheriting a fantastic pistol. Smith & Wesson is very good about providing you history on their weapons. If you call them, ask for the archives department and with the serial number they can provide you with all the info. As I understand it, there are two ways to tell which model it is. One being the presence or absence of that screw, and the other is the size of the extractor. Either way you inherited what is one of my all-time favorite pistols. Thanks for watching and let me know what S&W tells you.
MDpolo Gun Channel Thank you very much for your reply and your condolences. I’ll give your idea a try, possibly even tomorrow afternoon I’ll reach out to S&W. I’ll keep you posted.
Hello MDPolo. Just FYI. And that is my 52-2 does have the screw to facilitate double action fire, plus the updated extractor. This should prove what S&W did while producing the very end of its models. I’m sure some other manufacturers have done the same. That is to gather all remaining parts for the model(s) being retired and proceed to construct as many working models that they could have in order to bring them to market. And by the way they were stamped with the very last model number used when the model was still in the line-up. I’ll send a photo to your email address if you care for that. Nice video.
Hello!
Damn...thats a pretty sweet looking gun but they sure left out all the best features of a 1911 imho. Double action? 5 rounds? Wadcutter only? I will say as much as i prefer the look of an internal extractor...tha external on this guy looks pretty sweet.
Hi, I've got a 52 no dash as well - they're dandies. Do you know if the letters are supposed to be painted? Seems the really lightly handled ones are painted; some of the time that is. Possibly, it's a build up of 50 year old gun wax? Caked saliva?
Beautiful weapon! However I do not understand why you refer to it as a 1911??? It is a hybrid of the Walter P38 and the Browning Hi Power, neither of which is a 1911.
@@MDpolo I know. Long enough. Heavy enough. Almost no recoil or muzzle rise. Question... I'v tried 38 special and super. But it won't fit the mag. Is it really "only" wadcutters?

In the 70s I loved this pistol and a modified 1911 in .38 WC. Both worked perfectly with handloads afriend of mine made. As sidearm and for "in Germany meanwhile forbidden Combat-Shooting" I love my beefed up 1911 (Remington-Production). These guns were simply great and I miss them badly as our Gun-Laws in Germany are worse than in Washington DC! Until ca. 1973 we had the Nazi Gun Law (think abt. it) and it was really liberal! Germany sucks under a commi-government!!
Yeah, umm that's not a 1911. And the guide rod does not push in to release the barrel bushing on this pistol. Full length guide rods are completely different. That said, some would give their eye teeth to own that pistol. Me, not so much. I like to shoot my pistols, not look at them. My mod 59 is worn...but very accurate.
I wouldn’t dry fire it. Made that mistake only once. Have to be careful with older smiths. You break that sear your gonna pay big money to get it fixed and Smith Wesson won’t be in no hurry
