I saw an interview with Benny where he said he took care of the 16 yr old and her siblings after the father left the family on their own and that's really what the lyrics are about. The opening line came from a day when Benny and his writing partner were at his house and had been up all night struggling to write a song. The 16 yr old would walk Benny's dog, before school, for money for the family, and when she walked in the writing partner made a comment about her and Benny said she's 16 leave her alone and the rest of the song came after that. 🎶🎵

Benny Mardones lived in an apartment complex. He had a neighbor who was a struggling set creator on broadway. The family had come upon some tough times and had very little. When the father made it big, rather then help out the family he moved off with a 24 year old girl who was in the shows choir. One day the families 3 little kids came up to his door and began to cry, they told Benny that their Dad had left them. Benny told them that they would get through it. thank you! ... Benny Mardones was first discovered literally coming off a bus from Savage, MD by Joel Diamond. Joel gave Benny his opportunity to write and sing his first recordings. Joel produced Benny's first record called "Please Say You Want Me" followed by Joel producing "Tomorrow Means Another Day We're Apart" having gotten Benny a deal on CBS Records. Benny certainly carved out a major recording career after that having written and produced on of the most iconic rock songs ever and to this day, still in the Top 25 most played songs on the radio, "INTO THE NIGHT". It was Joel who made the Mike Curb connection for Benny to re-record "Into The Night" which landed him his second Top 10 record with the same song. It was only recently that Joel took Benny back in the studio to record "Into The Night" for the third time. Benny Mardones has the distinction and unmatched record of having had the same song "Into The Night", recorded by the same artist Benny Mardones, different labels and decades, FIVE (5) times charted on the Billboard charts. But not only the lead the back up singer, band and arrangement on the back up vocals and music..(whoever wrote and arranged) is Genius. But probably because today’s music is 👎🏾👎🏾 Someone said this song sound haunting. And it’s so old it is a little eerie.

Always loved this song. Not sure maybe had a song or so after this but this was his biggest hit. To me it's 🔥🔥🔥FIRE! Sadly he passed some time ago. One of the best voices I've ever heard in my 60 plus yrs of listening to music.
happy you guys loved that song. my parents loved it too, but thought "wth is he talking about"? anyway couple years ago i found out benny wrote the song about a family without a mother where the dad picked up and abandoned his two kids the older one a sixteen yr old girl. a sad story that had a future good turn. that girl benny wrote about and helped in a small financial way as he could.... as he was a broke musician at the time.... was interviewed on media when the song broke out..... and met a wealthy developers son working at the media outlet.... and they would marry later on. the girl of course an adult as time passed, kept in touch.
"Into The Night" is the song that's similar to a car wreck, it's disturbing but you can't turn away. His voice was amazing, it's baffling how he was a one hit wonder, with that gravelly, throaty voice and range, I don't think I know anyone that doesn't like the song. It's definitely on a the cringey side lyric wise, but dayum, it's still to this day one of my absolute favorites. It came out in 1980, right after I got married, I had just turned 17 yrs old so it wasn't that cringy to me then, but as the years went by, I started thinking, yeah, a bit creepy, but still badass. Edit: As far as it seeming familiar, chances are it's not familiar to something else because one thing about this song, I don't think there's ever been one like it. The story Benny gave about the lyrics is that he helped a family in the building he lived in by paying the daughter to walk his dog and his friend was over, they were writing music, the friend made a comment about her being attractive or something like that and he said "whoa, she's just 16 yrs old"!
And it was all lies watch the video the video was made when the song was written it's this creepy old man going to the door of a 16 year old's house while the father stood there and said go away instead he goes to the window climbs in and takes her on a Magic Carpet Ride I'd like to know how old the person was that did the video but then he made a story up when he got called out on it blamed his band member and it's all a lie a lie he's the creepy old man
Mr Benny passed away in not long ago just a phenomenal musician he had parkinson's disease he was in his late 30,s we he done this song this song really is about a young girl and her brother he took in and cared for for a while there daddy ran off and left them so he wanted to give them a better life than they were receiving at that time 😇🙏
I used to listen to this song all the time. it was a great song especially his voice his rough vocals kind of reminded me of Joe Cockers voice because of the gravelly rough way his voice would get when he sang. And let me just say I agree with Asia if I liked in anyway shape or form any kind of dancing I would definitely see this song as a good song to slow dance to
Im baffled why he wasn't as successful or near the success that Steve Perry had. Im listening to music over 60 yrs his voice was phenomenal. Im a huge fan of Steve but he is definitely competion. Would have loved to hear him do Unchained Melody, im serious. Absolutely beautiful song.
43 years back this song was playing at the R&B radio stations. As soon they figure out he was not black immediately pull out. Then the all non R&B started playing this song. Even the record company had to send letters asking to put back this song. The rest is history……….
The very first time I heard this song I was actually on my way back from orientation for my current job some 12 years ago and when I heard it, I will be honest I honestly thought it was a black guy singing, the soul and the power in that dude‘s voice. I’ve heard some call it blue eyed soul. I had never heard a song like this at the time and honestly I have not heard one like it since.
Many people unfortunately link this song with underage things, but it's far from the truth. It's about taking a young girl away from the trouble caused by her father leaving, being left to raise her siblings, and in an interview, Benny said that he helped out the small family. I might have it wrong on some parts of it though.
The emotion Benny put into his singing is beyond better than most singers I have ever listened to in my life!❤

I heard the song and it instantly grabbed me 2024. The lead singer is Magnificent. But not only the lead the back up singer, band and arrangement on the back up vocals and music..(whoever wrote and arranged) is Genius. But probably because today’s music is 👎🏾👎🏾 Someone said this song sound haunting. And it’s so old it is a little eerie.
I just love watching your reactions to this song! I love this song, I was only 7 years old when it came out! No one I’ve ever heard can sing and bring forth his message like him. There’s NO SHAME IN THIS SONG. WE ARE ALL FREE PEOPLE AND WE CAN LOVE WHO WE WANT TO LOVE. R.I.P. BENNY MARDONES WE LOVE YOU!!
I think it put Goosebumps on her That song just came all over her
What a beautiful story n song his voice is soooo soulful
TIME DOESNT TAINT GREAT SONGS! Actually one of my favorite songs ever
I agree with a gentleman on UA-cam analyzes songs saying He can outsing many singers. Should of been more successful, the right doors unfortunately didnt open for him. RIP Benny may God rest his soul.
Damn this song is so fire 🔥
Asias' smile is priceless every time he says "If I could fly, I'll pick you up...
If you’re a Nreaking Bad fan, this song plays in the background as Jessie attaches his moped to the outside of
The Quickie Mart to meet up with Walt❣️❣️
Always loved this song. One of the best.
I’m in love with this song the range of his singing is just so beautiful 🙏🌹💋🙏🌹💋
Always loved this song. Not sure maybe had a song or so after this but this was his biggest hit. To me it's 🔥🔥🔥FIRE! Sadly he passed some time ago. One of the best voices I've ever heard in my 60 plus yrs of listening to music.
Love the song and his voice
Damn!! I love this song sooo much! I call it my number #1 …one hit wonder ❤❤ Benny Mardones was super talented!!
It’s a bop! Benny’s emotional riffs hit different. Those gut wrenching notes transcends into the atmosphere.
RIH Benny♥️
happy you guys loved that song. my parents loved it too, but thought "wth is he talking about"? anyway couple years ago i found out benny wrote the song about a family without a mother where the dad picked up and abandoned his two kids the older one a sixteen yr old girl. a sad story that had a future good turn. that girl benny wrote about and helped in a small financial way as he could.... as he was a broke musician at the time.... was interviewed on media when the song broke out..... and met a wealthy developers son working at the media outlet.... and they would marry later on. the girl of course an adult as time passed, kept in touch.
And it was all lies watch the video the video was made when the song was written it's this creepy old man going to the door of a 16 year old's house while the father stood there and said go away instead he goes to the window climbs in and takes her on a Magic Carpet Ride I'd like to know how old the person was that did the video but then he made a story up when he got called out on it blamed his band member and it's all a lie a lie he's the creepy old man
This dude could sing!
Omg... I get to listen to this fantastic song with you!
Love this is song Benny brung the strength in this song
This one's a banger for sure. You gotta follow this up with At This Moment by Billy Vera and The Beaters.
I LOVE that song so much.
Amazing voice. Gets me every time.
The reason you think you might have heard this song before is . . . it's in the top TWENTY-FIVE of all time played songs on the radio.
This songs got SOUL!
RIP Benny Mardones😢.
Great song great vocals
Watch the video it’s a bit creepy
❤ Great song, great voice. ❤
This is my first time ever hearing this song and the artist
Mr Benny passed away in not long ago just a phenomenal musician he had parkinson's disease he was in his late 30,s we he done this song this song really is about a young girl and her brother he took in and cared for for a while there daddy ran off and left them so he wanted to give them a better life than they were receiving at that time 😇🙏
Loved it when it came out in the 80s!
I used to listen to this song all the time. it was a great song especially his voice his rough vocals kind of reminded me of Joe Cockers voice because of the gravelly rough way his voice would get when he sang. And let me just say I agree with Asia if I liked in anyway shape or form any kind of dancing I would definitely see this song as a good song to slow dance to
This man could SANG!!! ❤❤❤
Benny was awesome!
Professor of Rock just covered this. THe back story is incredible.
Incredibly beautiful song!!
Mucha nostalgia😢 escuchar esta HERMOSÍSIMA CANCIÓN 😩❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🥰
43 years back this song was playing at the R&B radio stations. As soon they figure out he was not black immediately pull out. Then the all non R&B started playing this song. Even the record company had to send letters asking to put back this song. The rest is history……….
Usher did a banging remake of this song but this original song is addictive, I have to listen to it at least ten times over and over
One of the greatest performers live incredible voice
Otherworldly...one of the BEST songs of all time, in my opinion!
I was 14 and thought this was so beautiful, so romantic. This was everything. ❤
I was so surprised to see this singer. That voice. He was so tiny
Es imposible no reaccionar con ésta canción es expectacular 😍😍
Great voice
I played on this fantastic record...Thanks
I love the story behind this song .
Many people unfortunately link this song with underage things, but it's far from the truth. It's about taking a young girl away from the trouble caused by her father leaving, being left to raise her siblings, and in an interview, Benny said that he helped out the small family. I might have it wrong on some parts of it though.
