Shield Knight Requiem sends shivers down my spine. The thought that during this entire journey, Shovel Knight is tormented by his failure to save Shield Knight hits you hard, and yet his resolve is so strong that he refuses to stop fighting.
That moment where you return to town, and the first thing to do is ask the bard to play Strike the Earth.
Every, single, time.
For me it's Flying Machine
I actually enjoy the town theme. The only time i ever bothered him was to hear The Forlorn Sanctum...and the last part doesn't even play!
Plains of Passage is the perfect track to set the tone of the game.
I have goosebumps from an 8 bit soundtrack. What's funny is I bought this game on a whim without knowing anything, played the first level, holy crap I was in for a shock. Reminded me of days long ago :')
This game was amazing! Totally worth every cent. Now I'm off to beat the game...again.

I hope that this is just the 1st in many more games like this to come.
It seems that the time is right for retro to enter the stage again.
It probably should be pointed out that Yacht Club Games, the team behind Shovel Knight, is made up of several if not fully composed of WayForward folks, the ones that made Shantae, Contra 4, Double Dragon Neon, Ducktales Remastered, and so many others.
If anyone knows how retro works, it'll be them.
mega man 9 & 10, fez, super meat boy, scott pilgrim the game, etc. etc. etc.
People have been milking this style for years, it's just that we get so few good ones.

I've never cried of joy from the melodies of a video game score.
But I guess that changes today.
They really outdid themselves with the soundtrack on this one.
It's Jake Kaufman man, he's made so many otherwise mediocre games seem incredible. (not saying shovel knight is mediocre please don't misinterpret my comment.)
As amazing as it is, not really.
I have to say, if you took the mono mix and made a stereo out of it, i am impressed. This works really well, even on my reference monitors it sounds well and balanced. Good job. :)

This game was such a big surprise for me, came out of nowhere and I had such a FUCKING GREAT time with it. And Im not even someone who played the old retro games like Megaman cause I was always on PC and still it was that awesome for me.
Shows that this game is not just good because of nostalgia but because its just THAT good!

Absolutely one of the best tracks in the game. I slightly prefer the Lich Yard stage and boss fight themes (Spectre Knight), as well as Strike The Earth, but Flying Machine could very well end up as my #1 fav.

Zack Vilardi 22 now-dead people. I assisted Shovel Knight in dismantling them, hopefully that can make me a secret boss that's a Wii U and 3DS exclusive in a future update of Shovel Knight. Seriously, we need to combatant that awesome Kratos fight on PS4 and cool Battletoads stage on Xbone. WE NEED IT!! (Though I don't want it to be Mario, I'd love it to be Link, Ganon, Kirby or Meta _Knight_, get it!!)

I keep coming at this daily since the pc release .. This is honestly one of the best ost I've heard those last years. Strong composition and arrangement, inventive use of the main theme, all the way throught. Might well be challenging for the real 8bit era soundtracks .. Keep up the good work, sir !

Love this soundtrack. Very Mega Man-esque and Mega Man had great music.
The original composer for Mega Man, Manami Matsumae, helped make this soundtrack. That explains enough I think.

Hm, this stereo audio could be really handy for transcribing/arranging these tunes. It does a great job of separating the various independent lines that make up the complex soundscape.
CitrusFury The original sountrack in NES format is avaible on the official bandcamp. You can use some tool to read it and get all the notes without room for mistake.

Games like this one prove that its not all about the graphics, a lesson that should be learned from many companys, looking at you two EA and Ubisoft -.-
Imagine if time travel existed. What if someone went back in time to the 8-bit era with this game and played it in front of a crowd of gamers in an arcade or something! It would possibly be considered the best 8-bit game of all time!

My FAVORITE type of music! I hope that some games get cool soundtracks with 8-Bit versions like this, only if not the games' actual music, then maybe a parody, more or less. I haven't had the actual experience playing this, but I did listen to it. It's really good!

I've always seen OST's as DLC's for games and scoffed. Shovel Knight however, has an amazing soundtrack that brings back oldschool style catchy themes. Definitely worth my purchase.

Could you explain how this was generated? I assume you used the nsf file Jake provided on the bandcamp page and rendered it with some tool, assigning the instruments to left/right channels?

***** RoadCrewWorker One way is to use Foobar and GEP, mute all but one channel in the nsf, render to wav, repeat for all channels, then use video editing software to assign panning.
There is a .nsf player (NSFPlay, I think) that allows you to edit the panning, and it also has an option to set random panning to the channels, which is what he used.
