I noticed after spending 3 years learning about photography and purchasing a huge full frame. I'm more likely to take something small like this when going out to shoot for fun. You get to the point in your photography journey where you can actually take great photos with any camera, im mind blown with i can do with an old canon SX400 bridge camera, applying the knowledge i've learned from using my full frame. Another thing is that if you're taking random street photos, people are much more comfortable if they know you're taking a quick snap with them in frame with a small camera, rather than a huge intimidating professorial camera.
There’s a huge industry - a bunch of industries, really - about convincing you it’s about the camera, not the subject or the photographer. And they tell you that you can buy your way to being a good photographer, or at least buy your way out of anxiety.
@@davestagner that is true.. but it's also true that some photos need a full sensor. that being said, carrying around a large camera gets more and more on my nerves, even w/ prime small lenses... i miss the small point and shoot cameras :)
@@duroxkilo in part the size is a reason I use film cameras. My Fujifilm DL SuperMiNi with its 28mm lens is super small, and my Canon EOS 7 is silent and very light. I was hoping full frame mirrorless would be like that but still they seem to big
My similar camera is Sony RX100 (version 1) which still works great and is super portable. Of course, main reason fuji and others aren't making pocketable point-and-shoots is because the smartphone camera market has taken that over (in the consumer space, which these were designed for). Even in the enthusiast space, smartphone cameras are dominant. I still love the feel and control of a dedicated camera as a photo-making tool, though.
I am finding that the phone cam is not good enough for blowing pictures up to large size. I'm going back to a real camera. I dusted off my old RX100 and surprise it's so much better than my S23 ultra, more natural colors, better lens. Video is better on the s23 ultra. So I'll get a small s24 and carry the Rx and the smaller phone.
I have used the XQ2 since 2014 and always has it with me, I even took it to the summit of Cho Oyu the Worlds 6th highest mountain and got some amazing images. As you say it never gets in the way. It is so small and light weight that there is no excuse for not having it with you. I am satisfied with the image quality even though in my daily work I am a Hasselblad X2D shooter, for its size it’s a very good camera.
I've fallen down the digicam rabbit hole pretty hard... I'm going to have to keep my eyes open for one of these now! I really appreciate how you recommend against buying if it gets over a certain dollar amount... Great video, thanks for putting this together!
I used my Canon S95 for a decade until I replaced it with the S110 (wifi image transfers) from Canon USA for just $100 new. Gave the S95 to a relative and its still being used. Great pocketable cameras.
Fuji had a number of interesting and under appreciated pocket cameras. Buried in a box somewhere I have two of their ruggedized XP series that did well for me for a few years. The last of which was the XP140. For a small sensor cam, it had 16mp and a BSI sensor (though not XTrans). Currently, my pocket cameras are Sony RX100 VII and ZV1, but my APSC are Fuji. Compacts don't get much love, especially with phone advances. Also, everyone has been told they need big sensors to do even mundane camera jobs. There's a level of good enough that isn't sexy.
Recently found out about the old XF10 and it’s another gem in the Fuji lineup. Underrated in my opinion. Picked mine up in mint condition, eBay from Japan for $400.
I bought the XF10 to be an everyday carry. It’s small enough to fit in a jacket pocket, but I live in a tropical climate now and never wear jackets. And it’s too big to fit in pockets of my cargo pants. I’ll take my X-T30 if I’m going to carry a bag. So I’ve resigned myself to using my Pixel phone for quick snaps. A double tap on the action button takes right into the photo app.
@@martingreenberg870 I bought an XF30 when they were still selling retail. It was a good camera but it stimulated GAS. My next camera after that was a new X-T10.
The XQ2 is a delightful camera but I'm not sure what planet you need to visit to find one around $200, waaay too late for that. If you're not stuck on the Fujifilm color profiles try to find a Panasonic LF1, it's about the same size, has a longer zoom (24-200 eq) and a small viewfinder. Not a Fuji but a great little cam to have in your pocket.
Considering I got mine sub $100 and there was one on BH 9/10 condition for $200 and another person reported Adorama having one for around $98 recently I guess planet earth?
Take a look at the Fuji F20 and F650 cameras. You can still get them cheap and you may find them fun to use with good quality results, which was my experience with them. BTW, there are microSD to xD memory card adapters available for these older Fuji F series compact cameras.
What!!!! I am an X series shooter / owner and was considering an xpro3 or 100V for my travels carting around lighter gear whilst out and about. My partner was looking for a reliable point & shoot and now I've found just what we are looking for! This way she gets a simple point and shoot camera whilst at the same time I get to use it creatively as I would with my X series bodies. (Just without the bulky lenses, filters, etc) No more arguments about an extra bag full of camera gear on our trips away. Thanks mate 👍 You've just made my day more than you'll know.
Dear dee, same here. Got also wife and a kid and i dont like to carry my xpro 3 all day. I bought the griii diary edition and im really in love with the camera. I dont have big hands so i got no problem with die dial and i use the cam as a simple point and shoot including some really nice ricoh recipes. Best choice because as you also said. You focus on the scenery and not on the cam. You want to be part of it. Cheers, Gio
Great cameras I paid £30 for a mint condition one and £10 for one that needed a repair ,was an easy fix. They are really going up in value at the moment, it’s an x20 in a tiny body
Great review. I like your logic about capturing the moment, rather than chasing down the specs and the 'gear'. I've got (literally) thousands of family photos - lots of which are never going to win any prizes, but ALL of them do make us smile when we remember those moments. 😎
Beautifully said. One of my favorite videos on this subject. Clear, honest, straight to the point, but still goes in depth. Keep going brother! Subbed. Excited for more.
I use a Ricoh GR digital camera from 2005 for black and white and a Canon Ixus 100 IS for colour. Excellent results. The Canon is REALLY tiny. Both are with me all the time.
You’ve inspired me to find something like this for my own wedding next year. We’ll have a photographer on the day, but I’ll still want to take some of my own. Amazing photos from this little beast
I got one few weeks ago, and I'm in love with taking photos again because how pocketable this camera is. My other camera is Sony A6000. I got it for 190 USD + cleaning cost me 95 USD. Thanks for the video!
For me I still lovey x70 which got for a steal deal at a dealership as it was a last piece (probably even in the country) . APSC sensor , perfect focal length for the type of use I like, outstanding image quality, manual settings , film simulations . Can’t ask for more .
It’s amazing 😩 I ripped my shutter button off taking mine out of my pocket. Need to find somewhere to get it repaired. Crazy to have something in perfect condition rendered useless like that
Looking for my first camera and love the film style like this one has plus it's digital so easier to handle. The small footprint is also amazing since I don't want to start with a heavy, massive camera to carry around. If someone has other recommendations, I'm very grateful to hear them. I don't know much about cameras and brands
Fuji XT200, Canon EOS M50 (I or II, same camera essentially) or any of the Sony a6's :) I use the M50 and even though the lens line is limited, there are adapters you can get to expand the lens selection. Fuji is best for film style but with post editing software like Lightroom you will still have fun trying to recreate the film style you want. Also, all those cameras are quite compact. Hope that helps!
MRSP in 2015 when this cam was issued US $399.95. On eBay they sell for $500 plus used. Some in mint condition but still used. And they have to be shipped from Japan mainly. Hasta la vista baby. But hey, great video, thank you. Is this camera issued in Europe?
I have the XQ-1, and have loved it for years. The black & white mode gives lovely results. Well no, it's not full-frame, too bad. It gives very fine images, and it's truly pocketable.
Nice, I bought the Olympus XZ-10 pocket camera years ago for $ 90.00 just to have a quick, pocketable, point-and-shoot. It is smaller, and faster to use as a camera than my iPhone, and it has many of the same Fuji features. Love it. Good choice on the Fuji
I was on the fence buying this awhile back, but end up getting the XF10. Looks like a fun quirky camera to shoot! XF10 is a gem, shame Fuji hasn't released another pocket camera in awhile.
I had the XQ1 and loved it for the size and form factor but the IQ didn't hold up for me. I also shot it like a prime at f1.8-5.6. I think a 1inch sensor would be the sweet spot. I ended up getting the XF10.
I got a 2011 release Nikon P300 for a steal deal of $16 USD used, complete with battery and an 8 Gb card ready to use from a local thrift shop here in the Philippines. I think the Nikon P300 is the closest camera contender to your Fuji XQ2 when it comes to basic specs because it is the same size, also has a 2/3 12 megapixel sensor, also shoots 1080p full HD video ahead of its time (720p is the norm for most compacts in 2011), and almost the same focal range with 1.8 aperture at widest focal length. I still use my Nikon P300 today when I need a compact camera in my travels because I think it is better in low light than midrange phones It got 5x optical zoom (24mm - 100mm equivalent), an f1.8 widest aperture, and most of all it has mechanical full manual exposure settings of aperture of ISO, aperture and shutter speed which is very easy to adjust whenever I need them (I am not a fan of software based manual settings that comes from the camera apps of smart phones). I think there are good compact point-and-shoot digital cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Kodak, Panasonic and even Samsung and Minolta that were either underrated or long forgotten. For me, powerful compact cameras comes in 2 forms - 30x optical zoom lenses that's better than the zooms of any smart phones, and professional user interface where you can adjust ISO, aperture and shutter speeds thru separate buttons and wheel clicks. That makes versatility in a small size. Image quality and performance-wise small points and shoots are all the same outdoors, setback by the limits in low light and high ISO performance, and long telephoto range slowness.

Man I promise I just saw a B&H one go for $200 but I just wonder how many of these are even out there. I hate how Fuji gives up so quick on these small cameras.
First generation Sony RX100 remains the price king of digital compacts. Also don’t sleep on canon S95 and Ricoh GRD3/4 (those prices tend to be all over the place but I have six of them none of which I paid more than 280 usd for) but all in all nothing beats the first RX100 for quality flexibility size and price.
I've considered buying something like this, but maybe you can help me with why I have not yet. I can get frustrated carrying around a larger camera with lenses, and the risk of having it in my car or person when out and about. I also understand missing the moments you refer to or being a disruption. So I get that part. But why is a camera like this better than just using the smartphone already in your pocket? Now you are carrying two things around, and I'm not sure if the image quality makes much difference in these scenarios. Would love to hear more on that topic. (*Great channel, by the way. I found one of these cameras 2 years ago at a thrift store that’s now closing. I wanted to keep this camera but the ring dial on the lens (which controls the iso, zoom, or aperture depending on settings) was glitchy and would jump to settings I didn’t want. Loved every part of the video ! Huge fan of the camera but I love how you made it about the benefits of compact cameras in general. They are under valued these days and people seem to think there is no market for them. But true photographers value and demand these compact size cameras.
I'm a photographer and I see no value in them for me. I have digital Sony's of all sizes, film cameras from mini Minoltas to 6x9 and 4x5. And an iPhone. Between those three choices I don't need another item to charge and carry around. The images offer less quality than my phone in a larger package. Maybe if was partying with friends and wanted cool group shots I guess. But for true photography it doesn't do me any good.
@@DeeRosa It's thicker though and that's what matters. I have used many compact digital cameras through the years and they take good photos. But they are not offering me anything exceptional these days and lack the full control of depth of field, long exposures, higher dynamic range, or tactile controls. These are great point and shoots but nothing more.
But you said you prefer to use an iPhone which is missing all of the things you said you want - and even more this camera gives you control over all the things you said and those controls are all tactile… it is a good point and shoot… which is what I said… I literally said these won’t replace your regular cameras… why did you make these comments… do you see where I’m confused on what you’re points are.
Thought provoking video. I have a Lumix TZ100 as everyday camera similar to your Fuji, I love it. With phone cameras being "good enough" for most people's snapshot needs the market for a simple point and shoot compact is now very limited. Sony's RX100 or Ricoh GR tends to get the mindshare of photography enthusiasts looking for a compact camera which leaves a small market for the rest. This limits the appetite for R&D for new models. With 10x optical getting better and better in a smartphone paired with computational enhancement I can only see the compact market contracting even more. The upside is there are loads of bargain used compact cameras to choose from 😄Like vinyl I think dedicated cameras will make a limited comeback. Fuji today makes a large chunk of its profits out of Instax which is a rehash of the polaroid camera for the instagram generation.
I honestly want to get back into digital cameras because they're not bulky and friends, even strangers, feel less camera shy due to it's size. It's a bonus it gives that imperfection feel in it's lack of sharp photos or high mp. I feel like I shot the most when I had my canon power shot.
Been eyeing this camera for awhile. Saw this on the Fuji camera wiki and seeing it as a little point and shoot with the xtrans sensor made me intruiged. thanks for the heads up that you shouldn't grab it in the $300+ range, i've seen it on the fuji groups for $300-400 and just felt like more than i wanted to spend on it.
Yeah man I think it’s the same guy selling it lmao. But like I told another guy B&H had one for $200 in 9/10 condition. Just because they’re rare doesn’t mean they deserve a certain price.
The XQ1 (the twin of this literally) has been my first 'real' camera, I have the fondest memories of it, still keep it locked in a closet. Will still recommend these as first, cheap camera for anyone on a budget
Great video 👌 I’ve tested most Fuji cameras and lenses since 2015 and I’ve found out that if you want the best cinematic filmic look to your images you need a Fuji xe3 or xt2 with an adapted yashica yashinon 50mm 5cm f2 lens with the side silver lever on it and believe me you will be shocked to see the images this vintage tomioka lens produces!!!!!!!

Not to be the idiot here - but isn’t the smartphone “good enough” for having great point and shoot in a matter of seconds while not getting distracted from what you’re attending? That’s for me the best pocket camera.
Sure. Idc what people use. I don’t like to use my smartphone. Not because the image quality but because it’s my phone. I never said to NOT use a smartphone and if you look in my description… I show you the gear I use when I DO use my smartphone. But these cameras are smaller than most phones and I just struggle with a phone man. I feel like I’m not quick and I feel clunky.
imo although my phone is the quickest camera i have and it’s on me at all times, i don’t really like how in order to actually get manual or even semi-manual things like aperture or shutter priority you have to purchase an app or stay with a limited freemium version that barely offers anything over the default photo app on my phone. it’s basically paying for a product you already own. however the phone can still take great photos when used well
I had a digital point and shoot camera 15 years ago that I took everywhere and I loved it so much. I think a lot about getting another point and shoot, but I have spent a lot of time figuring out how to get my phone cameras to focus and blur and do more artistic things and I am happy with my phone at this point. I have a Canon DSLR and a mirrorless for my more pretentious photos. I am always looking for recommendations for a good point and shoot, however. I'm going to look into this one.
Yesterday got two batteries for my "revived" EOS M with 22 f2. After some phone and Canon 7D with 70-200 a.o. I needed something pocketable with RAW. The EOS M I bought new for €299 with 18-55 kitlens, still got an EX430II flash as the 22mm f2 bought later. The little Fuji you got reminds me of the X20 I had, very nice lens and pocketable.
Got one and I carry it as backup, or for a main street camera. Those older Fuji compacts with 1/1.6" CCD and Super CCD sensors are awesome too, but the XQ1 and 2 really do well. The XQ shoots RAW -- that's a life saver.
Actually, I've just returned to using film cameras. I budget how much I spend by being not quite so profligate on how many exposures I do. I like the filmic look, and most importantly having a proper viewfinder ( Olympus XA2 in my case, and also Minox 35 ). Once you've used a decent viewfinder, who on earth would want to revert to digital cameras with just an LCD.
Hey everyone - before you complain about what the price is on Amazon; I got this camera sub $100, it was on B&H recently for $200 in 9/10 condition, people in the comments have reported it seem at sub $200. Stop being so quick to whine.
Starting to love old camera that were popular before I started to get interested in photography. I’ve sold all my mirrorless accept for my x100v. Started to play with Nikon 200d ccd sensor camera and d300 which I believe is first cmos censor. Both very interesting imagine quality.
People either need to be patient or stay away from Fuji, they are the most overpriced on the used market at the moment. There are lots of cameras that take good pictures from 50-200 bucks these days.

Love the video. I love the Fuji p&s cameras as their sensor color palette is natural and beautiful. Some of my favorites: Z900EXR, F70EXR, F80EXR, and the F900EXR (and 600, 660, 770, all EXR sensor). They give me that high end film look that I find appealing.

I have an olympus Pen EP-M2 (16mpx). I love that camera and always keep it in my backpack or pocket. I usually put a panasonc pancake 20 mm f/1.7 or olympus 28mm pancake (I think it's an olympus). system works great and the lenses are sharp.
I pretty much have used the Fujifilm X system cameras for the last nine year. The two main reason- They are great for B&W which I mostly shoot. They also don't have that sterile, clinical, sharper than real life, digital look. I prefer the old look of film, and Fuji nails that look more than other brands.
Hello. Congratulations on your wedding. My first digital camera was a fujifilm. It was a point, and shoot 3 megapixel. Those pictures came out very beautiful. Later I figured that any camera I bought afterwards took great photographs. Later I figured it was me. It's my style of shooting, and the cameras had nothing to do with it. So I threw everything away, and just kept 3. I use my phone, and ocasionally my canon eos. I have a uniden I bought 17 years ago 5 megapixels. It's a point, and shoot. The photos come out beautiful as well. The zoom lens is pretty good. I like basic cameras. I don't need that much. I do what I can with cameras, but they do what they are suppose to do. Another thing circulating back in the days was the hatred of those point, and shoot cameras. I like everything to be set to where I don't have to focus at all. I focus on the subject, and that's all. They tried to say that if you didn't use a manual setting your photos weren't going to come out good. I never cared about that. I like my cameras. I use what I have. Compact, and ready to go.😊 I like your video.
The older we get, the more prone we are to going back to the simple. In the '90s, we lived in the moment at clubs and concerts. We had these little digital point-and-shoots then, but hardly anyone (but parents) used them. Phones were small, then got huge, and now we have small options again for those who crave simple. I'm 45 now, and I like a bit of both.

There's a level of good enough that isn't sexy.
between the RX and the ZV, which do you prefer the most? what do you like and don't like from both?
Recently found out about the old XF10 and it’s another gem in the Fuji lineup. Underrated in my opinion. Picked mine up in mint condition, eBay from Japan for $400.
Accidentally purchased an XF30 for ~$200. Thought I was stealing an XT30. Nice camera but a tiny sensor.

400? Man! Its crazy. Bought mine 2 years ago new about 200 in europe
You got scammed bud
I have a Sony Rx100 Mk II that I use for similar situations you use this Fuji for. I don't use it super often, but when I do, I always love it.
I sold an XQ1 for $145 in December- anybody asking 400 is outta their mind.
Gen Z has decided these cameras & others like it are cool now, so the price goes up.

Cheers, Gio
An absolute gem. Recently I sent mine in to be repaired and Fuji said they don't repair this one anymore.
Inspirational Dee, thank you! Photography is about life and capturing the moment.

Crazy to have something in perfect condition rendered useless like that
I just bought one today for $13 at an estate sale. excited to use it while i am watching this video & waiting for it to charge

Also, Love your cap!
I have the Fuji xf1, its wonderful and I wouldn’t get rid of it for anything. It’s been my hiking buddy for 10 years and is still going strong.
@@mattm7831 Thank you very much! I‘ll look into them :)
Xq-1
I went down this road also, ended up with the Ricoh GRIII, zero regrets.
You are a philosopher and a poet and talks clearly. Subbed.
If you’re telling people not to spend more tha $200 on a decent xq2 then nobody is buying one. Average lowest price anywhere I’ve looked is $400 plus

This was an absolutely excellent discussion of the use of a small camera in our every day lives.😊
I used to have this camera and loved it. Image quality is great for the sensor size. Build of the camera is superb.
Love your honest takes. You are a breath of fresh air in a UA-cam filled with so many formulaic personalities.)

Hey the black-and-white photos are really nice. But all you UA-camrs and the price of doing film photography is jacking up the prices like crazy on these cameras. A couple hundred? I looked they were all like 400 to 800. Maybe 200 was the price six or eight months ago, but not now.

It’s actually smaller than your phone - smaller that an iPhone mini. Also for “true photography” I recommend just taking the damn photo.

I feel like I’m not quick and I feel clunky.
imo although my phone is the quickest camera i have and it’s on me at all times, i don’t really like how in order to actually get manual or even semi-manual things like aperture or shutter priority you have to purchase an app or stay with a limited freemium version that barely offers anything over the default photo app on my phone. it’s basically paying for a product you already own. however the phone can still take great photos when used well
imo the phone is good enough for me
I had a digital point and shoot camera 15 years ago that I took everywhere and I loved it so much.
Great video. Someone gave me an old powershot recently. It broke me 🤣 It's so easy to use it's unreal. Definitely recommend having one at all times.
It's still massively overpriced. Pay no more than $100.

I pretty much have used the Fujifilm X system cameras for the last nine year. The two main reason- They are great for B&W which I mostly shoot. They also don't have that sterile, clinical, sharper than real life, digital look. I prefer the old look of film, and Fuji nails that look more than other brands.
I need people to stop posting about this camera. It's been mega hyped up and I've wanted one for the last year.
