They’re not behind it but it sounds like the public cultural identity in China is justifiably invested in righting some wrongs. When the government is creating a market by legally purchasing acquired objects could you argue that the economic sense as motivation combined with stories you grow up with about artifacts from your heritage being stolen, who is legally liable then? Stealing back something stolen? If those ancient pieces still exist and there is the possibility of not losing them to weathering time and not being appreciated in their cultural context would you not seize the opportunity?

Ha, the Qing dynasty needed opium for both medicinal and 'recreational' uses. It was an essential drug for dealing with dysentery and fevers. The Chinese farmers grew opium but the British supplied the drug at a much higher quality that the Hong merchants preferred to buy imported rather than local. The Qing were less worried about opium usage than with the loss of silver from the economy

    I can definitely see it!
If they did steal it, will the items ever be displayed or will they remain basically locked in a vault?

Oh I know this story and can tell you a somewhat related one. It's of the old Javanese palace of Kraton Yogyakarta, which was invaded and ransacked during the short rule of Britain in Dutch East Indies (exactly at 1812). The British troop working with Spoy (Indian!) mercenaries burned the wooden palace structure & carted off priceless artefacts, some of which had found its home in the British museum today. Iirc the only thing they've given back were digitized archive of lontar & books that were taken (so not the real stuff!).
Seems like wanton destruction & looting & contemporary refusal to comply with repatriation is a pattern that's identical with European colonialism -- or shall i say strategy? If you ask me, as someone whose culture history was similarly taken by the Brits, what the Chinese did with their heritage is 100% justified. And they did so with much more efficiency, I've heard stories of auctions getting stopped bc they're getting cease & desist mails from the Chinese govt right at the day of the auction 😂

"Fontainebleau' ends with 'eau', like French for 'water', and is pronounced the same, so 'Fon-teyn-blow'

John I generally pronounce things in the way Americans do so it’s easy to understand for them. Similarly I pronounce Van Gogh and Hokusai American style.
