You have nailed down the snake roll my friend! It's quite impressive, and probably the hardest to get the timing right with a skagit line, imo at least. You make it look so easy. Also, I thought the way you handled the big fish loss was equally impressive. Total maturity in defeat, a good lesson for younger anglers.
Hey Joe, often I here streamers with troutspey, but what about traditional featherwing flies like the classic salmon and steelhead flies. Can you do a short video about those kind of flies scaling it down for trout.
Love your vids, Joe! I'm a dedicated spey guy in the Willamette Valley. Cutties have been on fire with soft hackles! Thx for droppin' a ton of science especially on trout spey.
@devinshook3289 Lots of access to the Willamette from Dexter to town. McKenzie is tougher to wade, but Hendricks Bridge, Harvest Lane and Armitage are all good for wading.
Just received the Skwala pol wading pants from ya, absolutely love them!!! Tried to order two more pairs but they are out of stock. I’ll try back later I guess. Great content as always, thanks a bunch!!!!
Thank you, I appreciate it. The video was super dark, just like the weather. Would like to do this on a bright day where you can see the casting better.
If it makes you feel any better the last two days on the Yakima I’ve lost 18 inch+ rainbows.. I actually saw you floating down the farmlands releasing a fish, one of the big boys was hanging just up river from there.
On that first cast was your shooting head barely out of the rod tip? And for each cast how far does the head usually need to be away from the tip if not using an integrated line? I don’t get any leverage on my setup unless the head is right up near my rod tip. Sorry for the noob question, thx!
Yes, put that head/running line transition right at the rod tip, especially when wading more than knee deep. The sink tip/leader length also affects this a great deal so it's dynamic. With a short sink tip and 3' leader, I might leave up to 2' of running "overhang" out the tip. With a 15' sink tip and 5' leader I might even have to pull the head in a foot or so. Each rig has a sweet spot, try to be consistent and find that magic spot.
Don't be afraid to throw a mop on a trout spey it'll outproduce 95% of the streamers. Kind of comical but it's still the best fly for trout spey, kind of embarrassing but we overthink flies
I agree. I have a personalized plate MOPFLY. Fancy flies are more for the fisherman than they are the fish. I didn’t think to try it spey casting. I’ll have to try it. Thank you for the recommendation.

Thanks on all fronts, appreciate that. Looking forward to cooler weather and some more spey fishing soon.

That hook up with the cutthroat was so cool
Thank you thank you l! It’s nice when it works out sometime!

I'm in the valley too, just getting into spey though. Where do you fish spey around here?

@christiancherry1377 honestly, have yet to catch a trout at Armitage. Gunna try soon though
@@devinshook3289 Go to the North Side or go down below the bridge about a 1/2 mile on South side.

Oh thanks for the order! I really like those pants. I wear them all the time when its hot out for everything.
Really inspiring video for me. Mr. Trout spey < 20 hours. Thank you. I am gonna go practice Friday!
Thanks Dave, good luck. It's the right time of year to start moving streamers under dark skies. Good luck!
Always great content!!
So appreciate that, have a good day today.
First from Virginia 👊🏻💪🏻
Thanks! You're on it.
Great video Joe. Beautiful rod.
Thanks Kenny!
Thanks for the video. Great action and instruction.

Another great video Joe. Felt your disappointment at the loss of the monster you had mid-pt in the vid…
Oh man thanks, that was a rare fish.
Great video

Right there with you on dolly lamas being a pain to cast, even on my 8 wt Spey. Can I ask what reel that is? Really interesting looking
It’s an older Lamson Speedster HD. Classic ride. Like driving an old Camaro hahah.
Paaaaain at the loss haha
Yes. That one hurt.

@@redsflyshopJoe, thanks so much man, I needed this info bad!
i feel your pain lol
Hey there, what size reel is this? thanks!
That is a 7/8 - that's what I run on my trout spey rods size wise. Any TS from 3-5 weight gets a 7/8 reel on it.
What net?
That there is a Fishpond Nomad Emerger. Big basket, short handle. PIA to carry around but nets big fish the times I don’t lose them first.
@@redsflyshop Thanks.
Well done my friend.
